The level design in this hack was actually pretty fun and engaging. Small levels with lots of backtracking and fairly good design.
However, there were several issues with this hack that should be cleared up before we accept it -- mainly, difficulty and graphical messiness.
The first level in the game in an area that is pretty easy to find is a bad place to put a 3-Up Moon.
Mario can keep looping through that pipe to get that 1-Up book/pitcher plant/whatever you replaced your Mushrooms with.
If Mario is big here, he dies from being smashed in that tight space.
Nasty palettes. You are obviously using some custom palettes. Play around a bit and make your levels prettier and easier on the eyes. It would also be nice for the FG to use a different palette than the BG.
Cutoffnessman is cutting up your tiles! Why is the ground half a block down, anyway?
Muncher spam doesn't really make a boss battle with a one-hit Bullet Bill spewing Birdo harder -- just more irritating.
Please apply the Fade Fix patch and make sure you aren't using bad colors.
This tile path reveal looks fine before and after, but definitely not during.
Is there a way out of this level when you get to this point? I couldn't find a way out. All I found was a message box telling me I MUST find the secret paths in the earlier levels (one of which leads to that 3-Up Moon) in order to proceed. So, I guess I just jump off the cliff here to continue my journey? Yes, damn Schnorgo indeed!
Not a reason for removal, but you shouldn't hide Piranha Plants behind the FG.
A Monty Mole RIGHT at the beginning of the level = not fun
Why not make this wall here solid instead of walk-through-able?
If I kill -- Schnorgo, I'm guessing? -- after climbing to the top of his "everything hurts you if you touch it level" (which, again, is annoying), I still have to go back down and kill the other lesser enemies I skipped, which is anticlimactic.
This hack does not meet the following Hack Submission Guidelines
Originally posted by Hack Submission Guidelines 4. Avoid major graphical glitches.
Errors such as garbled sprites/FGs/BGs, message box text screwing up layer 3 items, floating/stacked/cutoff tiles, and general graphical ugliness are frowned upon. Furthermore, don't forget about glitches which involve the sprite memory - the graphics of the sprite will 'disappear', but the sprite will still be there, and can unfairly hurt Mario.
9. Keep the hack at a fair difficulty.
Avoid issues such as death traps after the goal, blind jumps, forced damage, excessive enemies, places where you can get permanently stuck, excessive 3-UP moons, projectile sprites (e.g Bullet Bill) placed directly into a level instead of using the correct shooter/generator sprite, etc.
11. Have fellow users beta test your hack before submitting it.
Your hack should be as good as you can make it before you submit it to be featured in the hack database. A good way to make sure you have a quality hack is have it beta tested. Have your friends play it and give you feedback, or recruit some beta testers
