Some of this feeling is admittedly due to the lack of a proper final boss tune, the incomplete background scrolling and the like, but I think the greater part has to do with the actual movement patterns of both combatants, namely the Sky Pop's general slowness, and Norveg's tendency to stand in place for much of the battle, his angle of firing changing somewhat, but his relative position not so much. A Norveg with less of a projectile spread but greater tendency to move around when firing his projectiles might seem a bit more exciting. I also wonder if he could use a little more variety in his attacks--very much near the end of the battle, he started doing a fire-lauching attack in addition to his normal shooting--why not work this in earlier? Maybe have pieces of falling debris belched forth from the factory as it's going haywire come into play as the battle progresses as well?

Could not agree more with this statement right here.

As it stands now the entire second phase is just a lame, lumbering battle between two hilariously slow opponents, and it's rather disappointing to see the climax of this whole situation being played out at such a speed. If you ask me, this phase should be fast paced, difficult, and all around intense enough to make the player understand that there is a whole lot of shit going down. Oh, and maybe add some more attacks? Nothing crazy, just projectiles with different graphics and movement, shake things up a little if you know what I mean... But other than that, stellar job with all that mode seven trickery so far, looks damn good c:

EDIT: This was probably already discussed and I understand the graphics aren't final, but sweet jesus why is Norveg wearing a dusty rag looking thing? The man's an entrepreneurial genius and probably has tons of excess funds, he should be wearing a classy tuxedo or a flashy suit. Or really anything less pathetic looking.
I did not read the previous two comments because beans.

I know this is very very beta...but as it's stands, the boss is eh. It feels klunky, especially the second phase, which I can never seem to get pass by.

I have to say in the first phase, for the most part, you can safely stand to the right of Norveg and can avoid most of his balls of doom.

I can't say I'm a fan of those balls of doom either though.

But then again, it's like deeming Super Mario's Wacky World a bad game.
I talked to Roy on IRC earlier, and basically made the same suggestions as you guys. The biggest issue for all of us it seems is the slow second pace, and I believe this can be easily alleviated just by speeding up the sky pop a substantial amount. Phase 1 is way too beta to really worry about commenting on just yet, I think (aside from a few minor bugs). On the bright side though, Roy also said a lot of the time-consuming/hard work is done minus the layer 2 attack in the first phase. We've got the Mode 7 stuff working and the actual graphics routines by the looks of things.

Either way, I'm looking forward to playing any sort of revisions that address the bugs noted.

Has it been discussed? Nobody ever brought up this idea from my point. I just suggested Alessio to base the graphics off Smallhacker's idea. A tuxedo could work, obviously.

The sluggishness of the battle is a simple thing I can fix, no problems here. The attacks even use wait time so it's often a simple value fix. Same goes for the skypop sprite.

As for phase 1 taking place in a machine thing... that is sort of true. Remember that this foreground and background aren't final yet. It's supposed to take place in some sort of machine room.
The first phase is very incomplete. We don't even have all attacks up yet (not even half of what I intended), so it's difficult to judge on a boss with only one attack. I know that it's static though, but that's something I promised to work on.

As for the laser coming out of nowhere in phase two - good point. Perhaps I should make some add-ons for that, i.e. Norveg throws out two mechanical objects that go up or down and "form" the laser by being situated to the right and left of it. Could work, right?

Thanks for the feedback.

I should have something witty to put here (even if it's just to update dated info), shouldn't I?

Redesigning Norveg has been brought up a fair number of times, mostly by Rameau, though other people have supported the idea. Nothing was ever finalized, but the general census was always something more business like.

Alright. If that is so, then that's the direction we should head. I hope Alessio is reading this - otherwise I'll fire off a PM later today (but now I have to go).

For the people who are worried about having had no updates in the past 10 days - don't fret. It's just that I'm very busy with university (as predicted) and thus have much less time to work on Norveg. However, he is still being worked on and various things mentioned here have been dealt with (most notably the fluidity of the battle).

So no boss update here, but just a post for the sake of bringing out some information. This project won't stall. ;)

So, uh....has anyone seen Roy in the past, like....month? I know he has been busy with university stuff, but the guy hasn't logged on in 4 weeks >_>

Alessio, are you still working on gfx for this?

Me? It depends from Roy: i gave him anything he needed, for now. I would contact him, but i don't know how, personally, since he dropped off the face of the earth in those last times and doesn't have a e-mail address in public, but, if he does read his post, i'm going to assure him i don't reprobate him at all, i think he's doing more important things as well: we need a cure for AIDS or cancer.

... or he may have had his PC gone insane for some reason, like it happened with me a month ago, but he could use other PCs as well, if he can, but he has university, maybe even a personal room like college, and can't use other PCs. Mah.

Watch, i made a Super Mario 64 level

Just so everyone knows, this boss is open again. Roy can no longer work on it. I will have him post a zip with the files he had done so far if anyone wants to pick it up
