First off, I want to say that this is NOT a replacement for Yoshi's Mission. This is just something to do while I wait for stuff to get finished for it. Now to the hack.

Hello, folks! Did you go to this thread thinking this was a misplaced emulation thread? No? Well good for you. If you did, then this is a hack. I've been working on this for the past week or so in secret. It's much simpler than any other hack I've worked on. Time for some content.

Story: Mario was playing his Game Boy and got sucked in! Now it's up to you to get him out.

Screenshots:

This is the title screen, which is still a work in progress. Note the words "Push start to play". As soon as you push start, you go directly to the first level. No intro, no overworld. It's very much like a Game Boy game such as Kirby's Dream Land in that sense, which is what I was going for. Also I drew the graphics myself.

Yup, the first level is based off of Super Mario Land. What did you expect, it was one of the Game Boy launch titles!

At this point you might've noticed that literally everything is in black and white. Once again, I'm trying to capture the feeling of playing a Game Boy game. And if it had color it just wouldn't be the same.

Watch out, Fly! You're about to receive one hell of a concussion!

Looks like that Fly isn't the only one getting a concussion...

Mario, you know looking at the Sun will make you go blind. Oh wait, Game Boy screens don't seem to have a Sun because they're always so dark.

Well, now you know what path to choose for the highest amount of coins. Good for you.

In traditional Super Mario Land fashion, there are two level endings! The higher one gives you a bonus, and the bottom one gives you... absolutely nothing.

So yes, that's it so far. Each level in the hack will be based off of a classic Game Boy game. Can you guess which one is next? ;)

Oh yeah, and you have to beat the whole hack in one sitting since there's no save points. Heh heh...
Hay wow that looks good, I'd like the looks of this, I'll keep an eye out for this.

I had an idea for just this type of hack a while ago. Looks like I was beaten to it.

I have a recommendation for you, though:

0212F | Change from 01 to 0F to stop fadeout on entering level, new area, and back to submap.

Apply these two hex edits to remove all of the fading transitions, and make it seem more like a Game Boy game.

Or you could just use savestates so you don't have to play in one sitting *shot*

It seems pretty good, but only seeing screen shots makes it hard to judge levels, but from what you shown, it is good.

Just back here to browse a bit.
This....actually looks pretty cool. I like the idea to it. I thought of making a hack similar to this once (Complete Flat Zone Style though).

The Only thing I didn't liked is that mario still 16-bit.
It's weird to have a 16-bit character in and 8-bit enviroment. But meh, do what you want.

Yeah, I agree with FamilyTeamProductions. It is sort of weird to have 16-bit Mario in the 8-Bit world. But that really isn't a big deal...other than that this is really looking good.

EDIT: I didn't read the story the first time I went through this thread. Now the 16-bit Mario makes sense.

But the whole story is that 16 bit mario was sucked into the 8 bit world. Makes sense, eh?

Done with SMW for a while.

Yeah, but the enemies are also 16-bit, not only Mario (and also, why does the whole FG look like it's 32x32?) Anyway, nice hack and ideas, looking forward to this.

I'm really liking this. I wonder if it's possible to get the SML Mario in SMW?
It most likely is, but the hack is "Mario in his Gameboy", not "SML Mario exploring other Gameboy games". :/

--------------------
Good fucking bye.
There are SML Mario GFX on the site, but they have Raccoon Mario GFX instead of the cape. Other than that, this is the closest thing.

But Mario could maybe turn into SML Mario when he is sucked in. What about a cutscene of SMW Mario playing the Game Boy and then him getting sucked in?

I thought about that, but since this is only a side-hack with no real purpose but fun, I decided against it.

Also thanks for the support, everyone! :D
wow this looks like a lot of fun!

I can't wait to see (and play) the finished product.

Good luck~!

Looks pretty cool. I like the story a lot two (It's WAY better then the old "HER DER BOWSER STOLE PEACH KILL HIM" one :P)

I hope to see more progress on this.
I personally didn't like SML but I must say that I would probably enjoy playing this. I agree though 8 bit enemies makes more sense. (unless the SMW enemies got sucked in too)

look forward to playing this, demo or full release :)

Look familiar?
