We've kind of been .. "cracking down" on these a little lately. If you come across any sort of eye-searing layout and/or a signature which is quite large, please feel free to send a PM to myself or Ersanio in regards to the offending user. You will, of course, remain anonymous. We're simply doing this to make certain parts of the forum look a little nicer, and although it's not really a huge concern, it's still a bit iffy.
Thanks.
Can you give us a rough height limit? I mean, "quite large" means something different to all of us. A "large" layout for me is anything above 400 pixels, but to someone else 300 might be pushing it. I don't want to make a layout in the near future with a size I find decent only to have it nuked because someone else didn't agree.
Signatures are pretty self explanatory though. If they're generally bigger than your post then out they go.
Yes, I too have been wondering about sizes of these, and I actually see a couple of offending layout/signature sizes at times. They really stretch the tables in far as of Y-Space they use. It's about time this came up. It'll really help the site look a lot more nicer.
I generally try to to stay somewhat in the 300px limit, although I occasionally break it to go up to 350px or so..
I hope that doesn't count as 'too big'.Your layout has been removed.
It's hard to give an exact defined limit, though > 400px (or maybe even a bit smaller) sounds right. I'm more worried about the eye-searing nature of layouts as opposed to their size, personally (unless they literally vertically stretch the page into oblivion).
As for sigs .. well, there is the old saying that "if the signature os larger than the majority of your posts, there is a problem". Basically, anyone with a whole bunch of pointless images/text will need to remove them.

Don't you mean < 400px? (unless you're talking about what is unacceptable, I didn't really catch it)
In terms of sigs, I try to keep it at or below 4 lines (of text). Perhaps there should be a hard limit on sigs too, for those who don't understand?
I personally don't think there should be a hard limit on signatures. I mean, anyone with a functioning brain should be able to tell that a sig like this...

...is way too much. If it's that big, nuke it. If they don't get the hint at that point, they're probably idiotic enough to get themselves banned anyway.

And yet there have been much large sigs with even less content, ie by putting the user's list of favourite jokes in there (this actually happened), which just shows how lax most other message boards are on the signature rules, as sigs of that size are totally a-ok and common on tons of boards (that size is often accomplished by putting a single Halo image with the user's name on it in a fancy font into the signature too), making people get used to them (and using them elsewhere ie here).Your layout has been removed.
I just feel like adding that quite a few layouts don't define a text colour, using the scheme's default, and mostly, using the Social Blue theme, I can't see the text as the layouts use black font on black text. I figured this should be some sort of ruling added in.
Besides, if we find a rule-breaking layout (big signature, minor errors here and there, etc) we always try to drop by a PM first.
If a layout is breaking rules 'extremely' though (e.g. NSFW image, extreme eye burning, etc) I'll nuke it instantly.
So far I've sent 2 people a notice about how their signatures were too big, and proposed them a solution too.My Assembly for the SNES tutorial (it's actually finished now!)

That's why I'm so pissed over it. Like I said though, it's not a huge issue here since most people seem to exercise a fair amount of common sense, but when it DOES pop up, oh dear lord it's irritating.
At least we're not Vizzed Board, right SNN?
I've seen enough message boards where people frequently used their signatures as picture dumps and it's more than annoying sifting through a boatload of game/movie snippets with some silly name or nonsensical phrase slapped on top of it saying absolutely nothing about the user itself. Like, who the hell cares. It's mind-boggling how people even think it's a good idea to do that.
Definitely a good idea being a bit stricter regarding layouts as there are some nice layouts which shows the individuality of the user, but as soon as I see those "signatures", I get a seizure.
Pack that shit into your bio if you absolutely have to.
Yeah, this board is much better with signatures versus other sites that allow practically anything. Many people tend to carry habits they get from their first or second forum that they registered at so often many new people come from such places and think it is okay. Sadly people just assume stuff so often that they think they know the rules. This has been my first forum that I registered at so I get my habits from here. Where I am found.
I have seen a few problems regarding this, but I think the users whom I saw have this problem, fixed it by now.
If I could make a suggestion, could the offending user be PM'ed about the Layout so he or she could fix it up before it is totally nuked?Your layout has been removed.
If you've been inactive for a while and the layout is eye searing it's nuked regardless. If your layout is still readable, just breaks rules like userbar restrictions or post size, you usually get PMed a warning and if you don't respond in a day or so it gets nuked.
Of course, every staff member has a different attitude towards this. I used to always PM users when I was on staff, but some don't.
About every mod I ever reported a layout to (I do this a lot actually) decided to first PM the user before nuking it (except for Alcaro about fifty million times, but that was because the layouts were either really broken or completely unreadable).Your layout has been removed.
