Got Portal through the Orange box on my Xbox, but I'm glad it's free through Steam. I was always interested in PC games because how easily mods and custom content could be added, and Portal is no exception. I remember looking through some custom maps a few years ago, and I'm glad I finally have an incentive to give them a go.
I have portal 1 for steam already, and played through it. It's alright but you can only play the same thing so many times. So I download custom maps! Also, I've made a few. One I made before is actually really good but uses regular guns instead of a portal gun. I really should post it on my youtube channel...
Meh, I bought it about a month ago, so this news doesn't affect me. But for those of you who have trouble running it, go to "properties" then "set launch options" and put "-novid -dxlevel 80". It went from about 3 to 30 FPS for me after doing that, so it's worth a try.
A keyboard + mouse is the ideal control setup for a first-person game. Controlling first-person games with, say, an Xbox controller is really hard; you have a lot more control with the mouse than an analog stick.
I am pleasantly surprised that this actually runs on my old pile-o'-garbage computer. I do get a bit of lag in the larger rooms even on the lowest visual settings, but apart from a few places (the main corridor of test chamber 15 and the cutscene that plays just after you defeat GLaDOS) it's nothing too crippling.
