Briefing: The proposed boss for this level is Jelectro.

Design:

I'm actually very curious how this one looks. I didn't followed the boss design thread that much.

I should have something witty to put here (even if it's just to update dated info), shouldn't I?

The boss causes the wrong sprites to spawn. It spwans 06 (Fire Lakitu) instead of B1. But even then, I don't have a single clue on how to set the room up so the boss doesn't occasionally hi-tail it outta there, leaving Mario stuck.

It also freezes the ROM. So I'll fix Jelectro since NameUser has been inactive. But what does Jelectro look like? Show me a picture of him/her.

I'm sorry, but I'm not good at SMW hacking, so I gave up on it. That means I'm leaving SMWCentral. Bye!
hmmm... I have these graphics for quite a while, if anything, i can upload it anytime if wanted.

I doubt you know anything about ASM, so I wouldn't try to fix it if I were you.

Not to mention I'm 99.9% sure that said freezing is caused by the fact that the wrong sprite is spawned.

(if you want to learn how to set the room up, check out NameUser aka DoubleGale's videos. He has a completed version of this boss up there.)

That's a no go. If you're referring to a YT account named DoubleGale, then that account only has a single (TF2) video. I tried looking through NameUser's posts a week or so back and all of the video links he posted- including the Jelectro boss- were removed.

Damn. He must have taken them down then.

...guess it's time to experiment.

Or just fish around harder.

Found a ZIP (two, actually) in NameUser's file bin that has the boss room set up (though I edited it for this because the movements allow an easy cheap hit. I edited the ASM file to spawn the correct sprites and swam around to see if everything in working order. I want to say "Yes", but I have yet to figure out how to actually damage the boss. By the way, there was an Eerie generator in the sample level, but I removed it because it put Mario at the mercy of the RNG even more, which nobody will like.

And Ludus, could you post the BIN?

Sure
Here
and here an reference sheet.

And with an cool effect, this effect's not mine, jus used it to show the idea. But i can make something like this tomorow.

hi.
For one, I'd like to apologize for just dissappearing. To be quite honest, after all the time waiting to start my level for ASMWCP2, I really lost all inspiration and felt like an ass saying that after the big deal I made of wanting that level, and just kind of... left...
I'm sorry for that. That was a bit immature and I should have just told you I had lost interest in the level.

I'm still not too interested in SMW hacking right now, and I haven't done ASM in a long time, but I'll see if I can fix some of the issues. A few notes-
-Spawning wrong sprites is likely because the sprite reads from a slot. If the wrong sprite is loaded in that slot it will spawn the wrong slot.
-It's damage by luring it into the spikes on either side. However, there were issues with this. Namely, the code I found for having sprites interact with certain blocks wasn't exactly friendly with 32x32 sprites. On one side slight contact with the spikes would damage it, but on the other side you had to lure it halfway into the wall before it would take damage. I'll see if I can find a fix; if anyone has some more versatile block interaction code that would help.

Edit: To those having it fly away offscreen, the arena has to be at the very top of the level, on the first screen.
Oh hey, welcome back. We were going to kind of "rebuild" the sprite (or fix it) without you, but this makes things much easier now that you're around.

Do you have the most updated Jelectro sprite? I know that some people tend to delete their past hacking-related stuff, so if you don't, I have whichever one you sent me last.
There are jellyfish enemys in SMB3. And they are called 'Jelectro'. So why would that boss be named after the jellyfish enemies in SMB3? it sounds kinda weird that the boss is named 'Jelectro'.

Because it originally was just a big Jelectro, graphically.

Hey, I just realized this I just want to say it now:

Please have this boss have a "hurt state".

Its just a big pet peeve of mine; I don't like how many bosses don't have a "hurt" state or graphics; it looks so... unprofessional.
http://bin.smwcentral.net/u/7877/jelectro.ips

Fixes collision issues and has various changes to make the fight easier and more fair. These include:

-Increased his horizontal speed, making it less frustrating to lure him into the spikes.
-Lowered the speed of his sparks when homing.
-Lowered his speed when flying offscreen to do a wipe/wave, so as to give the player time to prepare.
-Removed his ability to come from the bottom doing a wave. This increases the amount of space the player is safe from the boss randomly coming out of a wall.
-He now plays a sound while charging the sparks, so if he happens to be behind a wall at the time, you don't get an unfair surprise.

If alls good with that, I'll send SNN the asm/cfg. The code in the asm file is a disgrace the smw hackers everywhere. I was new to asm when I first made the boss, and fixing it after having forgot alot about asm did /not/ help.

If you have any balance/minor suggestions, tell me them, but nothing huge.
And, er, if we do have something relatively biggish?

- Firstly, and most significantly, the boss has spotty hit detection with the spikes. Sometimes half its body will be covering them, but the boss still won't take any damage.

- Secondly, the boss needs to have higher inertia. It adapts to Mario's position too well, meaning it's still too hard to lure into the spikes, which is especially annoying considering it doesn't always take damage even when it does hit them. Deliberate attempts to get it to hit the spikes fail most of the time, and successful hits usually occur purely by accident. The end result is a battle which feels more a matter of chance than strategy.

- There should probably be more of a pause between sweeps; as is, if Mario's not in the (vertical) center of the screen, he's more or less screwed, and there's not really enough time to compensate for that when one swipe immediately follows the next. Also, the boss should probably give some sort of indication that it's about to begin around of swipes. How often it swipes also seems a bit random; sometimes it does nothing but swipe, other times it hardly ever does so.

- The boss should probably go over, rather than under Layer 1. It looks and feels very awkward as is, and causes too many instances of Mario being hit because the player simply doesn't know where the boss is. Honestly, the most elegant choice would really be if it were to simply interact with walls (since it interacts with the spikes already), but I imagine that would require a more significant recoding.

- The boss can be destroyed with a single fireball (though this doesn't trigger the level end).

Not really related to the sprite, but I also think the arena here ought to be a bit larger (or at the very least taller, since staying away from the ceiling and floor is imperative for avoiding swipes). The spikes would also probably looks better as Bubble-Man-esque spiked balls or something, considering the boss can hit them from the side, though spikes in this game are normally not dangerous from anywhere but the point.
I don't know if it's just me or if I'm missing something, but the Urchins glitch out.
No, that happened on my end, too. Of course, they could probably just be outright removed, since they don't really have a significant effect on the battle one way or the other, really.
