Briefing: The proposed boss for this level is being coded by cstutor89 and design was finalized by dinomar. Name has not been finalized yet.

Proposed Boss Battle:

This is really late, but how about incorporating Pyro Cryo Castle's gimmick (the cool/hot switch) into the boss? When the switch is set to "hot", the boss uses fire attacks, and when it's "cold", it uses ice attacks. Getting to the switch should be part of the challenge, similar to (i think) Megaleg in SMG, or the Bowser battle in Super Mario Sunshine. Once you get to the switch, something could happen to knock you away from it. In order to damage the boss, you need to get some sort of throwable item from one of the boss's attacks, then hit the switch, and then throw the thing back at the boss.

As an example, let's say that when it's icy, it makes a muncher[frostee] for one of it's attacks. Mario has to grab it, switch the switch to fire, and throw it at the boss. When it's hot, the boss makes pokies[koalunk] for an attack, and you have to throw the pokies[[koalunk] at the boss when it is cold. For added challenge, the things you have to throw could melt/die out after a little while when you're not holding them, so you can't just leave them there when you go to the switch.

Obviously, the pokey and muncher stuff are just placeholders for whatever the things could be. Maybe a snowball and some coal?

Boss Design(s):
Apparently nothing has been decided for this guy, I'll post my idea here.

Maybe the boss could be a two-headed dragon, (a dragon withan ice head and a fire head of course). Since this is the world 7 boss I assume it should have several kind of attacks; maybe the fire head's attacks could simply hurt Mario while the ice head's attacks freeze him without damaging him, but are harder to dodge.

(By the way, no, I'm not claiming the boss; I'm just dropping an idea).
Although your concept attacks seem somewhat well thought-out, I kind of think we could do better than a dragon. Fire/Ice dragons are quite overdone in games; if I remember correctly, the boss of Hailfire Peaks in Banjo Tooie (incidentally also a Fire/Ice world) was also a dragon. It's bad enough when my friends who played the game draw conclusions that this hack bears some striking similarities to it, but if we're going to outright copy it, I might just have to put my foot down and say "No". We can be more creative than that!

Lets see, we've already got a cat, a duck, and a crocodile among the ranks of Norveg's subordinates. How about boars/pigs for this world? The castle bears industrial architecture to it, Norveg's group clearly had something to do with it, so boss would probably be one (or a pair) of his loyal minions.

I think the boss would work better as a pair. And I agree with GeminiRage with dragons as Fire/Ice bosses being overused.

I no longer have interest in SMW Hacking as I did when I first started several years ago.
What about a two-phase boss? It could be icy on the first phase, and when you hit him enough times, he gets pretty angry and gets to his fiery form, wich is obviously stronger.

--------------------
I thought of something, maybe the fight could start out very simple, with a living iceberg simply throwing things at Mario. Then, after the first couple of hits, it would start to get redder and redder and then alternate between ice-colored and red. Its attacks could work like this:

It stops moving, and an icon appears on the screen, showing either a picture of ice, a picture of fire, or a picture of both combined, and the attack depends on which shows up. The icons would be randomly generated. The fire attack could involve the Sumo Brother's fire, the ice attack could work something like the Crystal King's main attack (shooting little shards at Mario) and the combination could involve a combination of the two. Also, at certain times during the fight, there could be an 'arrow system' like in the final boss of Yoshi's Island, where an arrow would appear and a blast of fire could destroy parts of the floor and turn it into lava.

I know it's complicated, but I just wanted to put my idea out there.

How about a snowman that constantly melts while still retaining its shape with a volcano for a hat? It could throw fireballs from his head, and throw snowballs from his body. I'm getting this idea from Kirby 64, by the way.

I may be a lurker and did nothing for SMWCP2 but I like this idea quite a bit.

The idea of a snowman just strikes me as too goofy to use for a boss of this caliber. I'm gonna have to side with Gemini and propose that a boar (or some other animal) that working under our fiendish rat friend.

Penguins. Polar Bears. Seals. Woolly Mammoth. Camel. Cobra. Scarab Beetle. Ra. Anubis.

The only Ice and Fire, or Desert, actually animals that come to mind. Excluding Ra and Anubis of course, who were an Hawk and Jackal, but whatever. Besides, what's wrong with being goofy in a Mario Hack? A little humor in one part out of absolutely everything else wouldn't do any harm.
I actually don't think a snowman would be overly goofy. It really depends on how the boss itself looks and plays out. If it were purposely drawn to be weird, then it might look a little stupid, but if it actually had mechanical parts to it and looked menacing, it may be really cool.
Could this work?:

I like this one a lot, the metal tooth and the red eyes give him a really evil look. I think we should go with something like that, but with a volcano hat like in the other pictures.

I guess we can still apply my attack idea for this boss, for example, the snowman could have an ice attack (like breathing ice maybe?) that would be hard to dodge but would just freeze Mario without damaging him and a fire attack (throwing flames from his volcano hat) that would damage Mario but would be easier to dodge. I suppose it could also have some more attacks like throwing snowballs and maybe even attacking Mario physically.

I thought maybe this would be a cool idea. Half of the room will be a fire themed room, while the other half will be a snow themed room. The boss has general attacks that it can use at any time, such as breathing fire (since it has a candle/flame inside his mouth), and some ice attack (not sure what it would be). On the fire side of the room, there will be burning rocks. Once in a while, the boss will go to there, and it will cause him to be holding one of those rocks. He aims and throws it at Mario. Since it is on fire, Mario cannot touch it. The rocks to the left are ice blocks. The snowman will pick it up and throw it at Mario. Mario has to jump on top of these blocks, which will knock it to the ground so he can pick it up and throw it at the Snowman. After X amount of hits, the snowman dies.

(An idea could be that the ice blocks have to be thrown at his head to melt the fire in his mouth?)

Just back here to browse a bit.
What if the boss is a fire/ice spirit and instead flies around you. Your goal is to run around through a small maze of a level and hit ON/OFF switches to "change the room temperature" and damage the boss that way. It's a little more creative than throwing things at it.

Or we could devise the fight so that Mario actually has to jump on the boss to damage it. Dunno why we never seem to think of that with bosses.
Fun fact:
Smallhacker had the idea for a burning snowman first, months ago.

Also, I might as well dump some more of the older concept art people made here:
- My personal favourite so far, a bitching golem that would turn around every once in a while (by jumping vertically off screen) and I believe he was supposed to split at some point, not sure.
- Some burning Dragon made of crystals that I don't believe the artist thought up any behaviour for.
- That weird twin chomp thing that even got sprited already by Ripperon-X, but I personally never liked the whole idea of this thing.

--------------------
Your layout has been removed.
The golem is my favorite so far as well. The dragon looks awesome, but GeminiRage already mentioned dragons being overused for bosses. And the chomp thing would work better as a pair.
