Official Speedrun & TAS Thread

Speedrun is basically completing a game as fast as you can in a determined category (Or complete a determined category as fast as you can). The most common categories are either any% (Simply completing a game as fast as you can) or 100% (Completing everything in the game or, in some cases, completing everything that is considered 100% in the game).

Tool-Assisted Speedrun (TAS) is pretty much the same as Speedrun, but it is done in a different way. While in a normal speedrun the player does everything as fast as he can, the TAS slows down the game to execute the perfect movements while using of tools (Such as save-states) to go back in case something goes wrong or for luck manipulation.

In speedrun, timing works at the very start of the game (Usually after the start button is pressed) and finishes either at the last hit on the final boss or when the player loses control over the game. The TAS timing starts from the beginning and ends at the last input pressed (So such things as menus at the start of the game counts).

So feel free to discuss about any Speedruns or TASes of interest, any games that you wish to discuss fast strategies and tricks, games that you think it might be cool to watch a speedrun/TAS, show the Speedruns or TAS runs you worked on. Anyways, feel free to talk about anything speedrun or TAS related in this thread.

If you are interested in watching speedruns, go to SpeedRunsLive and pick a stream of choice. SpeedRunsLive also use of races, so you can see people contantly racing games around there. For TASes, TAS Videos is the official site, with a lot of TASes submitted.

Examples:

TAS: Super Mario Bros in 4:58
TAS: Pokemon Yellow "Glitched" in 1:44
Speedrun: Super Mario Bros 3 Any% "Warpless" in 53:34
Speedrun: Mega Man X2 any% in 33:14
This is a smart idea. I request sticky.

I'll repost it here.

Wheee thanks for the sticky SNN <3

Here is an interesting TAS of the FDS version of Super Mario Bros. which shows the three "minus world" levels in the game.
Cave Story Japanese Windows version TAS done in 50:10.3 by Nitsuja.

Seriously I never thought the Machine Gun could be such a good weapon. His TAS beat my hell TAS by over 30 seconds, and mine is still a WIP. That is why my custom title says what it says.

Well you kind of have to expect it from the creator of the emulator. (In case you dont know, the emulator is called Hourglass and Nitsuja is the creator of it). He found the ram values for like everything, and even found out stuff like enemy clipping.
Welp, time to show some of the glitchiest TAS runs on TASVideos:

Super Mario Land 2 in 2:08.98 - Mario takes a small trip to the RAM... literally.

Rockman in 12:23.34 - Can you say "what the hell"?

The Sonic the Hedgehog series make intensive use of zipping glitches (each word in "Sonic the Hedgehog" links to a different movie, in case you didn't notice).

Super Mario 64 in 5:03.8 - As the movie description puts it, "the goal of pure speed has resulted in the complete breaking of the game. Very little of the game's normal play remains."

Last, but not least, this run of the SMAS version of SMB3, while technically not a speedrun, but a superplay movie, shows off some interesting and funny glitches.

This should be it for the glitchiest runs.

For runs that beat the game in a more "regular" way:

SMB3 in 10:25.6

SMB2 in 7:41.16

Castlevania Chronicles in 26:28.38

And lastly, Super Castlevania IV in 29:38.08

If hourglass ever adds support, it'd be interesting to see a Minecraft TAS.
Super Mario World in 2:36 for anyone who hasn't seen it yet.

It would be very interesting with Terraria as well. I'm watching Yrimir's speedrun for the Excalibur and I think something like that could be done with a TAS.

By the way, this one is a very awesome TAS where agwawaf plays Megaman X, Megaman X2 and X3 at the same time and 100% them.

There's probably some bug somewhere which can take you straight to the end.

But I still stand that the end isn't the games ending. It just rolls the credits.

I counter with this video of smb, smb2j, smb2a, and smb3 are completed simultaneously.

Nice try my friend, but what about this TAS which completes the first level of Megaman 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6?

In bonus, we can have a complete TAS of Megaman 3, 4, 5 and 6 at the same time by Baxter and AngerFist.
Ok fine you win. #w{:s}

Here is Donkey Kong Country "101%" completion in 38 minutes and 56 seconds. (Normally I'd round but when it comes to TAS's you need to be precise.)

This is a thing that's happening, now. Achievements in old video games.
Thank you for the layout, Erik557.

Minecraft is a very buggy game...I know a item duplication glitch that could be abused.

I found a seed which spawns you near an NPC village right next to a ravine with a mineshaft and stronghold in it.
