When I edit vertical levels, and play them, part of the level BG is animated garbage, and I change the initial BG starting position, still doesn't work...

Make it so the background doesn't move. This can be done with the "Modify Other Properties" dialog. Make the first drop down box say "H-Scroll: None, V-Scroll: None"

That doesn't always work, when it doesn't, make the entrance a screen up or down from where it was.

EDIT: Or you can try changing the FG/BG initial position.

Also, some screens give you crap no matter what, so sometimes you need to bump the entire level a screen or too. It isn't too hard to do, though.

Yeah, you'll need to start in screens like 00, 02, 04, 06 and so on, otherwise you'll have not much luck with your initial BG position.
