Lately I've been playing this nifty puzzle game called Chip's Challenge, which I got from Steam on the cheap. It kinda reminds me a little bit of Enigma, except with much more retro-style graphics and sound effects. Some levels are genuinely fun but others have a ton of fake difficulty and fake longevity. Telenet was the first level I ended up having to skip cuz I would sometimes randomly die when getting out of one of the teleporters, and once you get the red key you have to do the whole maze all over again, and I'm like "nope." Another level I had to skip was Spirals just cuz it's too easy to get lost and the walkers (which multiply indefinitely) can and will block your path. I very nearly ended up skipping Blobnet but I eventually persevered thru it. As of this post I'm on Block Buster.
I find it kinda funny that he'll get eaten by blobs or bugs, drown, rockets crash into him, or get burned alive, and his reaction is just "bummer."

I wasn't really a fan of the series before but I'm having an absolute blast with Smash Ultimate. It feels so good to play and it has so many fun characters and customizations. After maining Peach for the last three games, I've switched over to Palutena because she's super fast and super fun.
Do you play online or singleplayer? I play exclusively online pretty much, just to stay sharp. I get in a few matches on quickplay just about every day. (My only real complaint with qp is that I get banned for a DC that wasn't my fault, but it hasn't happened much lately GSP doesn't really bother me.)

I play as too many characters to really be that good, but I think I'm best with Dr. Mario, Kirby, Piranha Plant, or Dedede. I need to play as joker more since I love SMT but there's just so many characters in this game. And now that Banjo-Kazooie is coming, just goddamn, I'll try and be good with all of them.
I mostly just play offline. I'm good enough to get to 5m GSP but playing for rank isn't something I consistently do and my friends all have pretty bad connections.
I do the occasional 1v1 but my games are usually something ridiculous like "8-player timed battle with maximum Bullet Bill spawn rate, 50% more knockback, and stage morph on gimmicky stages". Squad Strike is a super fun way to do 1v1 though.
i beat cod: world at war's campaign last night on regular. i think at its core the mechanics are fine, the level designs are alright, but there are little design hiccups all over the place that kept me from consistently having fun.

the biggest one first - what's with all the grenades? i know the games are infamous for grenade spam on higher difficulties, but i was playing on regular and there were at least TWO occasions where i had just gotten into the first firefight of a mission, and had two grenades at my feet immediately.

secondly, there are sections of the game (mostly in the russian campaign) which are just completely overwhelming. the tank mission and the final siege on the roof of the reichstag are the ones that really stuck out to me, but some of the sections where you have to throw smoke to block mg fire can be pretty bad, especially in the american campaign (big one that sticks out is the one in the rain; i basically got lucky when i got through only using 2 smoke grenades).

lastly, it felt like a lot of the slower guns were...underpowered? it'd take like 2-3 shots to take one guy down with an m4 garand or an svt-40, roughly the same as a faster-firing, higher-capacity smg. it feels rather unbalanced.

but it was a fine time. a bit frustrating at times but a fun diversion. lots of cool ideas and twists on display, combined with fundamentally solid gunplay and some well-done "war is hell" motifs. plus i opened nacht der untoten for when my pals come by to hang out which is coolio
I'm playing Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's World of Light, but with a little twist : I can't use a single spirit, the difficulty is set to hard and the challenge ends when my savefile is on 100%...
The main problem : J O Y C O N D R I F T ! It's complete Bullsh*t...I can only play half of my games or the NES ones, but at least I can send my joycons to Nintendo for free, so it's not that big of an issue #smw{^_^}
RIP my friend's Ridley, he dropped it cuz I combo'd him a bit tol much as Mario.
Wow, I did it. I captured a whole 10,000 screenshots on my Switch so far. 10,000 are a hard limit. Despite the screenshots and videos only taking around 9 GB on my 128 GB SD card, I have to move them to my PC now before I can make screenshots again. Still kinda amazing how quickly I managed to get to 10,000.

My Switch was taking so long to save videos that I just deleted everything. I had an insane amount of pictures and that's after the first wipe I did.

Anyway, I just beat Mario Odyssey. It's pretty fantastic and easily the best 3D platformer so far. It has some problems with pacing and the
Mushroom Kingdom
is ridiculously disappointing but I'm still having a lot of fun in postgame. I have around 300 Moons right now. I love the game enough to basically have made my progress in three lengthy, hours-long sessions.
Been playing DKC Tropical Freeze, and it is balls to the walls hard, even more-so than Returns. The seal was kinda easy as you would expect from a first boss but the owl felt ridiculously hard for a 2nd boss, and I'm pretty sure there was also a level in late world 1 that ate up some lives as well. Currently on world 4 as of this post. High Tide Ride is probably the most creative mine cart level I've seen yet.
There's one part where you have to jump sideways back and forth on parallel tracks.
The only reason I haven't gotten a game-over yet is cuz I bought a bunch of lives from Funky's fly n buy, and the game is also pretty generous with lives anyway cuz YOU WILL NEED THEM!

I've probably said it before, but Tropical Freeze is probably the greatest platformer of all time. I still remember thinking the game was great, and then getting to the 3rd world which looked really dry and boring. I did a complete 180 as soon as I played the first level, now I think that level could be the best in the game, it could probably move me to tears. It's just so grand and whimsical and even inspiring, I don't know if I can describe it well, but goddamn, it's a good level.
I've just completed the demo of Dragon Quest XI on Switch. What a beast of a demo that was, with a play time of over 7 hours. It went quite a good bit into the game and thus gave a very good impression on what it's all about.

Well, what should I say... the demo actually worked on me and I'm now actually interested in getting the full version, which I didn't expect at all. Some of you may know that I've had a bit of a rough history with Dragon Quest games, as well as with other games that had gameplay similar to Dragon Quest (like Bravely Default). Most of my problems with those games came down to frustrations with the overall gameplay (mainly the random encounters and battle systems). While Dragon Quest XI is still a very traditional game that takes very few risks (often to a fault), I'm glad that the gameplay was changed just enough to remove most of my major frustrations. There are no longer random encounters (well, technically there haven't been random encounters in DQ games for a while), and character actions in the battle system are now carried out immediately (instead of you choosing actions for all characters at the beginning of a turn). The later change in particular allows me to finally somewhat enjoy battles instead of just being frustrated by them. It's difficult to express how much of a difference this minor change makes, but to make it short: when you now select any action in battle, you can be confident that it is carried out exactly as intended, whereas in previous games, a major luck factor was involved, because you never knew when your character's action would actually be performed.

While I feel like I can now definitely get into the game and enjoy it, there's still a few things I dislike. As I said, in a few areas, the game is traditional to a fault. There are a lot of dungeons without any safe points inside them, and while auto saves exist, they are only created during loading transitions, which some dungeons have few to none of. Case in point: I had the demo crash for me just after I had beaten a boss today, and because the last auto save had been quite a while ago, I had to replay a good chunk of the dungeon. Another thing I really dislike is the silent hero. While I suppose this archetype worked decently enough for past Dragon Quest games, this game's story is so extremely personal to the main character and so closely tied to him that it just feels out of place. Like, in Dragon Quest VIII, you could probably write the main character out of the game without it affecting the story too much, but in Dragon Quest XI, that wouldn't be possible, because the entire story so far, including all of the major conflicts, revolve entirely around him. It just feels weird when you have the worst possible stuff happen to the main character and he barely even shows any emotion, and it gets even weirder after certain events happen in the game (but I can't talk about that without spoilering stuff).

Overall, I am very excited for this game and hope I can get my hands on it (I don't know if I can afford it this month). It might turn out to become the most enjoyable Dragon Quest game for me so far, though I'm doubtful that I will enjoy it as much as games like Xenoblade Chronicles or Final Fantasy X. Currently, I definitely feel like its potential is hindered by being too traditional.

This doesn't have to do with whatever I've recently played, but did anyone here play (and enjoy) Xenoblade Chronicles? I'm super hyped for the remake version of it that was just announced.

Yeah, it's one of my favorite games of all time and at least in my top 5, if not even higher. I've played through it at least twice on Wii and once on 3DS, started playing it again on the Wii U (I think via the Virtual Console version), and am definitely going to play it yet again on the Switch. To me, it's probably the most influential J-RPG of the decade. The game is most likely one the reasons I'm having such a hard time going back to traditional RPGs nowadays.

Yeah, I agree - in fact, I would be willing to say with quite a bit of confidence that it's hands-down my favorite game of all time, and I didn't think that I would ever find a game that would beat Persona 3, BioShock Infinite, and Silent Hill 2 for me...SH2 is still a close second though #ab{;)}

The combat was always probably my favorite part - I thought I was alone in thinking that turn-based battles were really annoying, so playing that game was like a massive breath of fresh air for me.

Yeah, it's one of my favorite features. I just love how seemless the transition between exploration and battles is. Battles never really feel like they halt your progress, they just feel like a natural part of exploration itself.

I feel like Final Fantasy XII was already a major step in this direction, but Xenoblade Chronicles did it even better, in my opinion. FFXII has smaller, narrower, more linear areas, and enemies tend to follow you for quite a bit once they see you, so it feels like the entire game is focussed a bit more on battles, whereas Xenoblade has wide, open areas and a lot of non-hostile enemies that don't attack you automatically, so the game gives you a lot more room for exploration, and even when there are enemies that are difficult to avoid, they're often integral to exploration itself. For example, certain enemies may only be found in certain habitats, giving those places a unique identity, and some other enemies may be guarding interesting looking places, where defeating them rewards you with a new landmark or a really cool view.

By comparison, a lot of other RPGs, especially turn-based ones, often feel like they just have battles along the way to extend playtime. These battles often don't feel essential to the experience, they often feel completely isolated from traversal. It's like traveling and fighting are two entirely different modes that you're constantly switching between, whereas in Xenoblade, they're both interwoven.

I could probably talk for hours about Xenoblade, but basically, it feels like I can always play it my own way and at my own pace, something I can't quite say about a lot of RPGs.

Been flying through Super Robot Wars Original Generation on GBA. It's a lot of fun, fighting big mechs with big mechs and fabulous music playing in the background. I'm a little over halfway through the game I think. The game sure likes giving the player a million different characters to use.

I'm now on the final boss of Tropical freeze. He runs back and forth on the 3rd phase faster than a jet engine taking off, and WHEN you fail to hit him, he makes the platforms rise and then fall in the lava, and then more complex bullet hell ice dragons. I love the music and he's still very fun. I think I like it better than Tiki Tong Terror since it goes straight to the point rather than having to battle thru a rocket barrel stage that requires you to memorize the entire layout just to get to the boss.

Better late than never, but I finally got around to playing Super Mario Odyssey. My first impression of this game went above and beyond expectations, and that's saying a lot. I'd say I have a new absolute favorite Mario game. Completing Cascade Island is really hard not because of the level design (it's the typical easiness you'd expect from being early on) but because it encourages exploration with things like extra Moons, doors and pipes built into the cliff, purple donuts, and being able to play as a T-rex (which is nonstandard character design since it's modeled more realistically as opposed to the cartoony look of everything else). Another thing I like about this game is those segments where you go into a pipe on a wall and then turn into 8-bit 2D platforming.
I'd already played a little bit of the desert level at GameStop, so I already had a small taste of it.
