if you have beaten this game before then maybe you'll find this page about the game's "lore" interesting: TVTropes has Theory

good night everyone

I completed Dragon Quest XI yesterday. I think overall, the game was amazing. I liked it so much more than I could have ever expected. I mostly have just a few minor and one major complaint. Pretty much everything I've mentioned in my demo post is still true for the full version. However, unlike the demo, the full version contains the full story with a lot of moments that I was quite emotionally invested in. Really, it's been quite a while since I've played an RPG that had such an emotional impact on me. This alone overshadows all of the complaints I have. Like, they're there, but they weren't nearly enough to harm the overall experience.

I only completed the 3D version of the game. I gave the 2D version a try just once and it took only a few seconds to realise that it was pretty much the classic Dragon Quest experience that I don't like very much. Nice for people who are into it, but it's a way too frustrating experience for me to be enjoyable. I'm glad that the 3D version did introduce the few changes that it did. They were what made the game enjoyable for me in the first place.

Luckily, it seems like there's still a bit of post-game content, so I might still be playing the game for a while.
Feel free to visit my website/blog - it's updated rarely, but it looks pretty cool!

My first impression of this game went above and beyond expectations, and that's saying a lot. I'd say I have a new absolute favorite Mario game.

Still have this impression even now. Seems like it's more about exploration and creativity than about being challenging. Not nearly as difficult as Super Mario Sunshine (tho there is at least one bonus area that plays just like one of the FLUDD-less platform levels). If you thought there was an insane amount to do and was easy to get sidetracked before the final boss, that's nothing compared to the post-game.
That one track that plays during the
moon escape while playing as Bowser
sounds like something that could have come from The World Ends with You, and the dragon boss is probably the most un-Mario looking thing in the whole game.

One of the post-game objectives is to fight all 4 Broodals in a row, and then rematch against
the robot piloted by the 4 Broodals that you fought in Bowser's Kingdom.
All with no checkpoints and only 1 opportunity to heal yourself, so WHEN you die, you have to do the whole thing all over again. I guess you could call this a Broodal bonus level. You pretty much have to buy a Life Up heart for this. I'm extremely thankful that all the things you buy in this game are bought with in-game currency rather than real money, which is the way it should be in all games where you can buy stuff, so there really is no excuse for micro-transactions.

Lately I've been getting real into The Talos Principle. Yet another one of those first-person puzzle games that introduces new elements so you don't get too comfortable with a voice that talks to you, but other than that, it's absolutely nothing like Portal or Turing Test. Rather than being placed inside a sci-fi looking interior, you're outside with ruins all around you, and a temple that's a central hub, and you don't even have any kind of handheld device that you carry with you all the time either. The graphics are quite stunning as well.

In addition to the "test chambers" there's also places where you have to fit Tetris pieces (or sigils as they're called) into a rectangle in order to open doors or unlock more puzzle elements, like
the console thingie where you push a record button, then do stuff, then come back to it and push play, and an apparition of the player character mirrors the same movements you just made, complete with interacting with apparitions of the same objects (and you can also interact with them for as long as the apparitions last).
That one's hard to wrap my head around and any level featuring those (even if it's short and sweet) is guaranteed to require some thought.

I just played thru Yoshi's Island DS and Bowser's last phase is soooo lame. The first 2 phases were actually hard but the last phase where he's all big only reminded me of just how much I prefer every single aspect of the original YI Bowser fight. Here he's extremely easy to hit and there's no real sense of urgency. Just easy to dodge fireballs and boulders falling from the top screen, and the music is extremely repetitive and feels like it's building up to something only to not build up to anything at all.
Mario's room was disproportionately easier than the other rooms.

Yeah Yoshi's Island DS falls flat on so many levels but none is as much of a disrespect to the series than the music, which has continued to plague most of the newer Yoshi games.I can't even believe I called in sick and missed a day of school just to play YIDS all day when it came out.

imo they shat on the series as much as they could with Yoshi's new island, retconning the ending to the original game only to create yet another mediocre adventure with terrible music.

Not going to touch on the music because honestly I don't remember it that well but personally I liked the game and it felt like an ok sequel though lacking a bit. It's a whole lot better than Yoshi's New Island which my buddy just gave me cause he hated it so much and after I think the 2nd world I could totally see why.
YNI really dropped the egg. Some music tracks are decent (final castle comes to mind) but the rest is just eh. Special mention goes to the level that's literally unbeatable on the original 3DS models due to a gyroscope issue. No wonder they gave out a free Yoshi 3DS with the game...

I like the jungle music and flower garden, but the boss musics especially are all very underwhelming and unfitting especially the final boss music. Some of the bosses themselves are pretty creative. Moltz the Goonie and Six-Face Sal are probably two of my favorite bosses. Many of the bosses seem like "equivalents" to YI bosses. It's an okay game but I prefer the original YI. YIDS and New Island kinda remind me of video game versions of straight-to-video animated sequels.

That's almost making me wanna start my own YI hack (key word being 'almost' because IDK if I'm even really serious about that). I'm not even really curious about playing Yoshi's New Island (not even for bile fascination). I'm sure the average YI ROM hack would be more well-received than Yoshi's New Island.

Been replaying Black Mesa since they released Xen, going thru all the earthbound chapters plus Xen. Sooooo much different from and longer the original Xen. I like how the first Xen chapter is a breather level, and how Gonarch's lair is part boss fight, part chase scene thru a cave. Just like in the original, Gonarch (literally a giant spider-like alien with a giant testicle dangling under his (or her?) belly) is That One Boss to me. I'm kinda nervous about Interloper, since people are calling it That One Level and TvTropes says it's a massive difficulty spike, when the original Interloper was already hard as nails due to all the alien controller, Vortigaunt, and alien grunt spam.

Alongside that, I've also been playing The World Ends With You Final Remix, which I'd gotten for X-mas. Somehow the battling feels more fun on the Switch than on the DS version, and the soundtrack is absolutely dope, one of the most unique soundtracks of any game I've played as the majority of the tracks have lyrics. The DS version kinda felt to me like it was meant to be a 2-player mode that you have to do in single-player, but this one, not so much. I don't think I could comprehend trying to play it in docked mode. Touch screen is way more convenient.

Haven't posted here in a while, so time to briefly talk about a few more games I played in 2019 before the year ends.

Pokemon Sword:
Feels like there's no more Pokemon fans around on SMW Central? I remember there always being a lot of activity around Pokemon releases in the past, but it didn't feel that way this time. Is it just because most activity has moved to the Discord, or do people no longer care about Pokemon due to the controversies?
Whatever the case, here is my brief opinion on the game. Gameplay-wise, this is one of my favorite (if not absolute favorite) Pokemon game so far. It's impressive how a lot of little changes make for a way better and smoother gameplay experience, even though there is still room for improvement, and I really love the wild area and wish there was more of it. Content-wise, though, this might just be the worst Pokemon generation ever. I don't even mind the national dex cut too much (aside from one minor detail I won't go into here), but aside from that, the game just feels unfinished, there is almost nothing to do after finishing the game, and not even a single legendary to catch in the game aside from the story ones. Have never been this disappointed in a Pokemon post game. It's really time for development to shift to a two-year or even three-year release schedule at minimum.

A Hat in Time:
Pretty great and fun collectathon platformer that, in gameplay, feels mostly inspired by Super Mario 64. I really like the style of the game as well as its worlds and characters, but the camera is unfortunately rather bad and in need of improvement, and the controls are okay, but don't feel as smooth and flexible as the controls of Mario games that they're so clearly inspired by. I guess you could say the controls feel as though they were a beta version of Super Mario Odyssey's controls.

Timespinner:
Pretty great Metroidvania (more on the vania side). Loved it so much that I really wanted it to be a bit longer, but as is usually the case for Metroidvanias, it was of the "short but sweet" kind and could be finished in a couple of sittings. I fully enjoyed my time with it, though. Gameplay, story, graphics, music, lore and world all felt great to me.
Feel free to visit my website/blog - it's updated rarely, but it looks pretty cool!
A Hat in Time's camera really drove me up a wall when I played it. The floaty jumps made precision easy but it felt annoying just how slowly you took to rise. I constantly found myself climbing onto stuff I didn't mean to with the wall running mechanic, as well. By the end of the game, there were still some things I could never find confidence in with regards to control.
I really enjoyed the game but I'm not sure if I'm going to revisit it. I was really disappointed by the first wave of DLC and I haven't even thought about purchasing the rest.

I finished Mario Odyssey with about 900-something moons. I really enjoyed my time with the game but it's clear that it's not something that I'd 100%. I've pretty much exhausted all the fun content and it's the pure filler stuff that's left. I had a blast with the game for the 20+ hours I spent with it. I hope we can get more worlds in the next game, with smaller size and less emphasis on being stuffed with as much as possible. It's a problem that I felt Sunshine really suffered with, and it felt that the devs there really struggled to think of anything to fill that small amount of worlds with so we just got lots of repeated boss fights and coin hunts.

I still play Smash Bros Ultimate a lot. I'm a Palutena main but I have a big list of secondaries: Peach, Luigi, Robin, Corrin, Wii Fit Trainer, and sometimes Kirby. I never really got into multiple characters before so this is still a new experience to me. It's fun trying to transfer knowledge from one character to another because sometimes it inspires me to try out new tactics or combos.

I've made ten Mario Maker 2 levels with a bunch more in the pipeline. My thread in that subforum's been ignored for a while and I'm kinda hoping I could just get it deleted or something so I could start anew there.
The addition of multiplayer with friends is a godsend and it's launched the game into easy game-of-the-year status for me. I play it constantly with friends and family and it's always wholesome fun. The other stuff added via updates is neat too, though I'm super disappointed that Link follows traditional powerup mechanics instead of just having an heart meter. It really kills level design potential.

I'm currently playing Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold for the millionth time. This time I'm using a team entirely of supports (Medic, War Magus, Hexer, Sovereign) and I'm finding it an incredibly strange and interesting way to play. The boss fights in this game are notorious for their punishing movesets and damage-race design, and fighting them with a low-damage team like this is really fun since it requires me to properly react to many things and do all sorts of things to maximize damage output and TP efficiency. I'm currently at the fourth stratum and doing a bunch of annoying quests.

I finished Tales of Vesperia and, while I expected it to be extremely mediocre, I was still really disappointed. I didn't really like the sluggish pacing, the level design, or the characters. It was fun enough for me to finish it but it wasn't the best in the series by a long shot. I'd rate it somewhere between a 5 and 6: fun enough for me to finish with friends and interesting enough for me to want to see the end, but not something I'd ever come back to.

I'm also playing Disgaea 5 again. I really wish NIS would start including "unlock everything" cheats with the base versions of their games. Story mode, quests, and all the other crap just gets in the way of the item worlding experience that I want. I especially hated the story mode levels this time around and it really dragged out my first playthrough.

And apparently I had every right to be. Not only do controllers (which are essentially 3D bullet hell with little cover so thank the powers that be for suspicious video game generosity) show up at the Vortigaunt village and make the docile Vortigaunts turn on you, but after that
you also have to go through a maze of multiple Gargantuas chasing you, with Bullsquids and Houndeyes impeding your hurry, and passages that look like a way out lead to bottomless pits.

I'm currently on Culmina Crater. The farthest I got was I think the part where you place Cappy on the thing and it makes blocks jut out of the wall. I like being surprised to find something I missed.

I know the feeling. The screenshots thread just about might as well be my level thread. So far I've started on a bit more levels than I've actually finished and uploaded, including one where I want the player to finish while in the Koopa car, and a ghost house that IDK if I even plan to finish at all. Some level ideas I thought about but haven't actually started yet include one inspired by the Yoshi's Island DS level 'Superhard Acrobatics', a custom autoscroller that goes up and down a lot, and one that would be called "Walljump Playground."

For what it's worth, I personally enjoyed the second DLC (Nyakuza Metro) way more than the first one (Seal the Deal). In the first DLC, really the only thing I liked was the ship itself. The level was pretty interesting, big and fun to explore. However, I disliked pretty much every task you got to do on it. Definitely don't need to ever play it again, except maybe just for fun, exploring the ship and taking my sweet time, not doing any of the tasks.

The second level, on the other hand, is more of an exploration-based, open level that is really big and expansive, looks cool and has a few new, interesting gimmicks (such as finding hidden stamps or buying food). Not to mention cool clothes that you can buy (by the time you get there, you are likely to already have a lot of excess money, so that's quite useful). I actually enjoyed it a lot and would probably even call it my favorite level in the game.

The second DLC gets my recommendation, but the first one definitely can be skipped.

I can safely in no uncertain terms that Black Mesa's Xen is worth the wait. People complain about how "Interloper isn't fun and it's an utter chore to play" but I'm not one of those people. Tho I might be in agreement about the visuals being "too much red."
This might be an unpopular opinion but I found Nihilanth somewhat harder than the elevator ride leading up to its lair. I like how Interloper gives you
infinitely renewable gluon ammo,
since that's one of my favorite weapons to use when I actually have ammo for it. One thing I like about the elevator ride is how they made sure that the music that plays during it plays for the whole scene as opposed to other parts of the game where the music might stop playing while you're still on whatever battle. Tho the part with
multiple controllers in those forcefield bubbles where you have to destroy all the shield generators first and there's an abundance of healing pools, which is during said elevator ride
feels more like padding than actually challenging.
Nihilanth is pretty much a first person bullet hell game that puts alien controller zerg rushes to shame, and I like how he doesn't teleport you to different rooms this time.
Also, the bad ending is more nightmare fuel than in the original HL1.

So thankful that Half-Life isn't a Nintendo IP or else this would have gotten a cease and desist.

Been playing Wild ARMs 2. Had a bout of falling out of love with the game during my illness period but I'm feeling better and I am just. Feeling the game.

It's repetitive and it's very basic, very fillery. The translation is jank but, something about it just sticks with me. Mostly the music. The dungeons are pretty good too. Bosses are what's kind of boring.

They're the carol boss of RPGs, the kind that you just hit and heal repeatedly. I've been mostly coasting over using just normal attacks and Lilka's Heal. Only used Revive once. Haven't really gotten any other magic added to the Crest Graph other than the preset Flame and Freeze.

Fun fact: One time I was eating tortellini with butter and playing WA2 and I was just in heaven

Meanwhile I've also been playing Super Mario Galaxy 2 on my brother's house. Waiting for him to give me a (jailbroken) Wii to play it at home alongside Galaxy 1.

I'm still at the early game, beat Peewee Piranha's Temper Tantrum, Storming the Sky Fleet, Saddle Up with Yoshi and Spiny Control. Spiny Control was a matter of figuring out I'm not supposed to jump to hit King Lakitu and then ragequitting like an idiot.

Levels are getting a bit tough, but I'm also not good with analog sticks. I tried Think Before You Shake but it's pretty tough. Maybe next time. The Chomps are so cruel orz. Galaxy 1&2 are so good I really want to play them more. And to hear 3D World is even better... I need to get back to Odyssey too!

Edit (January 21st): Played a bit of Final Fantasy I (NES) yesterday. Still a fun game, made it past Pravoka. Currently grinding money for magic with the Buccaneers KYZOKU before heading to Elfheim. Party is Fighter/Monk/W. Mage/B. Mage. It's a quick game so I just named everyone AAAA BBBB CCCC DDDD too.

Got to Vagullion in Ys I Chronicles yesterday. He's tough so I got all Silver equipment and got to Lv10 (max) first. I'll do him some other day though.

I managed to clear the Shrine and do the Abandoned Mine in one day.

Meanwhile I made it to 8-3 in my SMB1 replay. I'm getting old so I'm saving between levels now.

Played some SMW hacks today.

Super SIG World 1: Beat ナツカシーとう (World 1: Nostalgic Isle) and ノホホンへいや (World 2: Nonchalant Plains). At World 3, シーサイドパーク コース3 (Seaside Park #3). A very obvious first hack. Kinda cute.

Seawar Mario World/Imitation Mario: Beat USAテネシーしゅう (Tenessee, USA), きいろスイッチ (Yellow Switch), GO! GLA and かぜ が やむ とき (A Lull in the Wind) in World 1. I had to savescum due to difficulty. At World 2, しょうかんの よる (Night of Summoning). Also visited マジックマッシュルームキングドム (Magic Mushroom Kingdom), need to start doing the magic/powerup acquiring sidequest. Levels represent SMB2 (USA), a Mercedez Benz GLA commercial, Klonoa 1, Summon Night and SaGa Frontier (Blue's story). Impressive if unstable/inaccurate ASM, but doesn't know when to hold back on difficulty. Seawar is my friend so I wont grill him.

Gokudou Mario World/Mob Mario: Beat はやくいけよ、 (Let's Go, Hurry Up!) and もりでモリモリ (Upbeat in the Woods). At Stage 2, かいすいよく か しぬか (Bathe in the Sea, and You're Good as Done). Very good graphics and music. Level design is good but enemy spam is notable. Overall I'm glad I'm replaying it.

Super OTL Mario: Still at World 1. Beat ぜんじどう (Totally Automatic) and もりであそぼう (Doing Nothing in the Forest). Actually only beat the latter because the former is an autolevel, also savescummed in the YI3 edit/forest level. Tried ちからをあわせて! (Join Forces!) but it's a bit hard. I'll grind for lives then try again. At さがってあがって (Go Down, Go Up). It's kinda youtube-y so far, but Heraga and Morsel assured me it'll get good around World 3.
HackPortsASM"Uploader"

Starting to get back into shooters, been grinding a bit the stage 2 boss of DonPachi.

It's really hectic, but once you get it down it's pretty simple. Stay outside of the wing lasers' line of sight, first two disc bomb showers are easily nullified by standing in the center and firing the laser, third one just move right, weave between the bullets when it starts firing (it always moves left first), when it ends stay right between the lasers and bullets, the large bomb shower can be nullified by staying back and firing the laser once more. Repeat from the start. See example here.

Trying to 1cc the game on the Saturn version's easy mode before moving on to "little easy" then normal. I think normal is the arcade original but I'm not sure. I'll probably end up trying to 1cc the arcade version anyway.

My plan is basically reloading a savestate at the beginning of the stage/boss with each game over and practicing until I can do it without a game over. If I can make it through the stage without a game over, it's good, but I'll practice a little more to try to ingrain the strategy.

I also pirated legally purchased DoDonPachi, so that'll be next.
