SMW Hacking: Serious fucking business.
You all need to chill out and realize that this merely a contest on modifying an old SNES game. I really don't get how anybody could get worked up over something as mundane as this.
If you had fun in designing the level and participating, great, you did something productive. If you participated for the sake of boosting your e-pen0r which means absolutely nothing outside this website, congrats, you wasted some of your lifetime.
The judges all have their own opinions, it's only natural that they all won't agree on the same thing. You placed low, wonderful. But you participated and *hopefully* had fun in doing so. Take the results as they are and carry on.

I guess 16th place isn't bad for a first-time entry. It seems my spritework brought it down a little. Sprite usage and placement were never really my strong points.

All right, 25th place. I knew I would do well.

I've uploaded and linked an archive containing every entry to the first post.
I loved the judging this year, much better then last year!
and i exceeded my expectations.
...also FirePhoenix, i would be delighted to hear your opinion on my entry

13th place on Friday the 13th, I'm so lucky. Last year I got the 50th place, so I did went way better this time, I'd say it's partly because the judges and the judging method was better, but I also think my level was better this time.

Nah, I'm happy with my idea, more than 2/3 of the full note is a good score. I really wanted to use this idea this year despite the few time I had (i envy you, the youth!).
I checked those wonderful text files, so um, just a thing for each of the judges:
-FirePhoenix: I would have seen at least a quick comment about my level, but I guess the reason you give the level design an average score is probably similar to the stuff MrDeePay pointed out.
-MrDeePay: Yes, I agree with you on most of the things you pointed out, I just didn't get enough time to fulfill completely my idea on due time, so yeah there are wrong stuff, and I see how to fix them. Just a thing though: you say the use of the water and the net is dull, I don't see why because the gimmick here was to "go up", so was it a bad idea or a possible idea but badly exploited? Also I agree with you and AxemJinx on the boss, I should have just put a goal sphere because it was poor, it wasn't finished and originally, there was supposed to be a big boo and you defeat it with a flying yoshi, but of course, they are incompatible.
-AxemJinx: COPAAAAIIINNN!! (friend, in french). Guess you are the only one who enjoyed everything despite the repetition MrDeePay mentioned. You're gonna get angry I think, but in the room with the noteblocks, even if you put the springboard in the middle, you will not get high enough to get the door, actually, the moving boos here are munchers, so there are solid, and you have to put the springboard on the head of one of those boos when they start to go left, so the springboard will move with them and and you can jump on it to get the door, I knew it wasn't so clever. x) The magikoopa was ok? I thought it was the worst!

So huh, to be simple, what I should have used to avoid repetition? The falling platforms? The flying Yoshi? The pink triangle? Something else?
Well thanks for your...judgment! I hope to see you and join again next year!
Last word: the more I see the results of all the contests so far, the more I think the final result depends on how the judge "feel" the level.
PS: poor yogui, I was with you on this one.

So I read the results and though I was expecting MrDeePay to give me the lowest score, he actually gave me the highest out of the judges (25/30). The lowest being Axem (22/30) who said the enemy placement and platforming incould have been better.
Yeah, I feel I went overboard trying to introduce a whole lot of junk in one level.
Though if it's a good level design contest, I will have learned something from this to improve upon for next time. And the judges were a lot more qualified this time around.

Of course a "real" prize is given out to the winners the year I don't decide to enter.
Oh, and congratulations to the winners! I should probably play their entries now before I put them off and never get to them.

Wait, don't the mods put all the entries in an archive after the contests get transported to the Old contests forum?

@Dinomar: Your thinly veiled vitriol and narcissism is not a little disappointing, but I stand by my assessment of the level. It looks fantastic, yes, but I don't think all the different areas you have justify the long overall length, and the spritework isn't very engaging at all. Most of it is grounded walking enemies on flat terrain within corridor-ish areas, which makes the enemies about as challenging as Doom AI. It reminds me of A Boy and His Blob (Wii), which in my opinion has similar issues. Nobody doubts your artistic ability, but if you think your level is nearly perfect compared to all the entries that scored higher than yours, I'd say you're just stubbornly refusing to broaden your horizons.
Not to mention the original post was Firephoenix's 4444th ^_^;
Oh wow, why didn't I think of that? ^_^; I guess that does make the room a tad more reasonable, though I think it's still my least favorite :b
For instance, in the super koopa room (2D), you could have made the platform arrangement more varied like you did in the other two rooms on that floor. The water area (2B) felt really claustrophobic; perhaps if you made the path a bit more twisty and wide, and maybe used a couple of rip van fish or something, it might have played better. The ideas you mention in your post would probably make for nice rooms as well, and are probably worth experimenting with at the least.
This is true to an extent, but I think each of the judges have valid reasoning to support their scoring. There were times when we agreed on what an entry's issues were, but merely disagreed on how much the level should be penalized. Either way, the differences in scoring are a good thing, since that means we're accounting for different tastes and giving designers opinions from varying viewpoints to help them improve across all areas, ideally speaking.

What is this madness?! I expected everyone to get first place. I am shocked and appalled.
I am entirely happy with this. It's a nice, even number ... and I don't have to share my score with anyone. That makes it all the more special~
I'd say for the fifth level I've made, and my first contest, I did well enough. The errors found were unfortunate, and should I have noticed them, I might have scored one or two points higher. Pity, but I suppose I'll just have to wait for the next contest and make it into the top 15.

Holy mother of god. I can't believe. I. JUST. CAN'T. BELIEVE!!!
After seeing the results, I had to log in and post.
4th place?! THAT'S FREAKIN' AWESOME!!!
I didn't expect that great for a level that didn't even use Direct Map16 tiles. So many awesome entries in this year's contest with great potential, and I got a honorary mention...
This sounds like a victory for me. I'm quite happy.
Welp, congratulations to those who made it to the top! You surely deserved it!

Congratulations to all winners. When Yoshicookiezeus enters you just know there's no competition. I knew I wouldn't end high though, it's like everytime BEFORE the results I learn alot more about level design.
Violators will be prosecutedt to the full extent of the jam.

Don't worry, yoshicookiezeus IS beatable. He's just a lot more experienced at level design than most of us.

Wow, we switched rankings from last year's Vanilla Contest. I'm still satisfied with 25th place. I didn't expect to rank as well as last time.
