I know. I made a thread for this during C3, but it got buried on the last page, so I figured I'd just make another thread here.

Maybe some of the older users here may remember a hack called Super Mario Starlight Remix. I made that hack back in 2006, when I was very new to SMW hacking. Every now and then, I'd ask myself "What would SMSR be like if I made it now, with my current hacking skills and the resources and tools available on SMWC?" After pretty much shelving Mecha-Bowser's Revenge, along with an 8-level strawberry mini-hack I once planned to release for C3, I decided to start a hack very loosely based on my first proper SMW hack. The reason I say "loosely based" is because this deviates more from SMSR than Super Mario Bros. 5 Reborn deviated from Super Mario Bros. 5. The main reason for this is because this hack has a completely custom overworld, rather than the blatantly-edited OW of SMSR. This allows me much more freedom over World themes than I had with SMSR's shoddy OW.

SCREENSHOTS & VIDEOS

An old video of the title screen
There are some graphical errors in the video, but they've been fixed.

Peaceful Plains 1
The video is a bit dated. I've made several fixes to graphical glitched and have tweaked the palette since this was made, but it still gives a good idea of how the level plays out.

There were some coins and a Yoshi Coin on top of this ledge, but I already collected them.

Rex

Going for the last Yoshi Coin of the level

A glimpse of the Overworld

Peaceful Plains 2 takes players underground.

I killed that Monty Mole's little buddy, and he's next >:D

Peaceful Plains 3
Here's the third level. In this video, you can see that the player has the option of playing as Luigi, who has slightly different handling than Mario. This is done after loading a save file. The only flaw of this is that Luigi is still controlled by the second controller.

Peaceful Plains 4 takes place around sunset, so it has a "warmer" BG palette.

Charlie will NEVER get me up here. :D

Another Charlie waits to run you down near the end of this level.

Iggy's Castle
Here's the first castle of the game. It uses the Bowser Castle GFX I submitted during last year's C3. Iggy himself is a custom boss based on Iceguy's Ultimate n00b Boss template. For this hack, all bosses will either be downloaded from this site or created using Iceguy's template. This will prevent what may very well be the downfall of Mecha-Bowser's Revenge: A lack of bosses.

Thwomp!

Barely escaped getting Thwomped here

Whatever that was is dead now. If you must ask, it was a Koopa.

Jump!

Getting close to Iggy now

Luigi vs Iggy Koopa

The submap for Parched Plateau, the hack's second World

Here's the first level of Parched Plateau.

Venus Firetrap
Yep, those pots act like pipes. It's a bit of a shout-out to Super Mario Bros. 2.

Those yellow blocks can only be broken by fireballs.

There must be something in that pot, but Luigi's too much of a straight shooter to get it.

Parched Plateau 2
There was once a level in Mecha-Bowser's Revenge called Dunes of Deception. It's gimmick was that there were enemies hiding in the brick blocks. Unfortunately, that level wasn't all that great and was scrapped due to the custom Exploding Block sprite being incompatible with the Cobrats of COBRAT! This incompatibility actually caused the custom Exploding Blocks to crash the game when the player reached the screen on which they were placed.

Something's not right about one of those blocks.

Piledriver Micro-Goomba

That WAS an Invisible Coin Block. Don't worry, I won't be using them for Kaizo Traps.

How could I disappoint MVS by leaving Pokeys out of this hack?

This level is currently in-progress. It's a puzzle-based pyramid level. Think of it like the Ghost Houses from SMW. There are many doors, but only certain ones will lead you to the exit.

Gau isn't about to just let you have that Yoshi Coin!

This is why I needed that P-Switch. Don't worry, I didn't have to carry it too far. I'm trying to limit the number of screens one needs to carry carryable items to avoid Item Babysitting. Here, you only have to carry the P-Switch for 3 screens. There's a bottomless pit along the way, but if I dropped the Switch, there was another door I could've gone through.

Fire Snake
I had to use Google to find this since it wasn't in the Sprites section.

OH NO! I'M TRAPPED...Or AM I?

I like how this is looking so far. The grassland GFX are a real treat to look at: they look new, but at the same time fell like the original one, which I like. AS for the OW, its nice, but at the same time, the desert submap has somewhat bland cliffs. Maybe add more curves or change the GFX a bit. Looking forward to seeing more of this hack.

--------------------
Nothing to see here. Move along.
Gamma V, kudos on the background graphics for both the desert and the island. you're officially my favorite ExGFX creator and my inspiration :)
I almost lost this hack yesterday. I was preparing to insert quicksand blocks, and BTSD kept spitting out unhandled exceptions when I tried to open the ROM. I had to take some time to port everything over to a new ROM, which wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. After getting everything ported and successfully inserting the quicksand blocks, I was finally able to work on the penultimate level of World 2.

First, I have a few other shots from the rest of the previous level.

Another Fire Snake

Since I'm not small, I can just break the brick block to get that P-Switch. If I WAS small, though, I could always use a Koopa Shell to get it. If that failed, again, there's another door to go through.

VIDEO - Parched Plateau 4
This level has a lot of enemies who shoot/throw projectiles at you. There's also plenty of quicksand to sink in.

Be careful when going for that Yoshi Coin.

Boomerang Bro. This won't be easy.

Another Boomerang Bro is guarding this Yoshi Coin.

Here's a preview of the map for Crystalline Caverns. The map was still WIP at the time this was taken, which is why there are no level tiles yet.

Woa!!
Something I really liked there is the graphical consistency. This hack has only one GFX style, that's a good (and rare) thing.

NICE WORK!!
I am licking the hack so far.
Only criticizm:bosses! To easy the iggy boss even for world 1 .It should have more HP and more variety of attacks .
Just add more HP and more attacksand it should be fine!

Keep up the great workd!!!
I love this so much <3
It look gorgeous.

Keep up that awesomeness !

Formerly known as MetalJo
@xImseiken3: I might give Iggy a couple more HP, but if you're small, it's actually pretty challenging.

I'm almost at the point where I can release a 2 World demo of this hack. I recently finished building Ludwig von Koopa's castle and am waiting on a boss Medic is apparently making for me.

Those stone block platforms fall when you stand on them. Yep, there's just reskinned falling gray platforms.

Throw me a bone!

This room autoscrolls, so choose your path wisely.

This is the Castle of the Parched Plateau?
Yes, it is. I'm still waiting on the boss though. If it takes too long, I'll make something with the n00b Boss.

Yes, they are.

If you're looking for Wendy, Lemmy, and Larry they're already here on this site. But getting Iggy, Roy, Morton, and especially Ludwig isn't gonna be a walk in the park
I'll be making Roy and Morton with the Ultimate n00b Boss, and Medic is apparently coding Ludwig right now. If he can't get it done, I'll figure something out with the n00b Boss. Also, since I've used Lemmy before, this game's Lemmy will be a Mouser reskin. He'll be the third boss.

if you're going to be making the roy and morton bosses, atleast submit them directly to the sprites section so everyone can use them.

yeah, and submit every single japanese port and hack and carols bosses on this site, that would be wonderful. fighting julius in each hack.

#w{:<}
I'd be using a boss template made by Iceguy for those bosses. He coded everything I can make the boss do in the template's ASM. Roy, Morton, and anything else I make with that template involves nothing more than filling in some fields with ready-made code and defining things like sprites spawned.

So ludwig will be firing "deadly" music notes at the player
You do know there's a Japanese Ludwig boss available online, right? The same one from VIP 5?

It's linked in my tutorial.

As for Mario's Nightmare Quest? Well, it's currently on Fusion Gameworks, ROM Hacking.net or the GCN at the moment.
I'll take a look at that Japanese boss if Medic takes too long.
