The Overworld

Now that 103 is in my possession, I believe it's time we started on this map. The best course of action would be to begin with the main map, and then do the submaps afterwards. I have provided a (very rough) sketch of the general skeleton of the map, as well as the level order. It can be seen here:

Link to image (big)

World 1 is on the bottom right corner (it can be made bigger - this is just a sketch, after all). World 2 is the "forest" near the bottom. World 4A is the ocean/beach at the top left, and world 4B is the desert at the top right. Level names are provided to give you an idea of how things should be laid out.

The first step before we begin actually designing it is the graphics. We need someone who is willing to redraw the original land tiles (this includes paths, trees, cliffs, etc) and well as adding in some additional details into a separate ExGFX file:

Quote
-Girders and hills in World 1.
-Trees, marshes, and a burning area for world 2.
-Lots of rock formations, islands, and perhaps even an oil rig for world 4A.
-Pyramids, palm trees, cacti, and ruins for world 4B.
-Barathrum Baritis is basically a beach fortress, so cannons/stone ruins will be needed for there.
-The purple blob represents a fallen asteroid, which will be accessed after world 8.
-In general, industrial decorations should be littered all over the place. Machines, conveyors, girders, whatever. Basically, anything to liven up the map.

If you plan on doing anything with this map, please try to familiarize yourself with the hack a tad if you're not already familiar. By this, I mean you should at the very least enter each level on the map to get an idea of what the FG/BG look like. It'll make it easier on you for coming up with graphics.

So .. yeah, this is one of the last things that needs to be done for the hack. Let's get going.
So, you're going to have drawn the corresponding GFX first for various areas as well as the entire land, cliffs and so on, and then we'll start the progress on the OW based on the skeleton of the map you provided in the first post of this thread. Am I right?

And by the way, is it going to be fully like in the image you provided, or will it be possible to adjust the design of the OW? (well, the desert part of world 4 takes up almost 1/4 part of the main map on your image and it just a flat portion of map without at least any one cliff) Will this OW stand out more by the design of it, or the decorations drawn for it? (every world has one flat portion of the map and some nice unique decoration for it) How is it going to be?
...Huh?
Not constructive: Is changing the position of Arboreal Ascent final? Not that I disagree with it (Blazing Brush does seem more fitting for that spot), but I would have appreciated it if someone told me. (Oh well, guess I should have followed the threads more lately). Anyway, if this is final, I'd like to change the ending part, as it doesn't need to resemble Briar Mire any more.

Constructive: I can offer the graphcis I made for Pokey's Adventure if needed. They're neither too fancy nor too different from SMW's graphics, but still worth showing,I figured.

I might also try my hand at drawing extra graphics, as well as actually designing the thing once we get there.

Teo17: Yes, your first paragraph is correct. Also, it'll be entirely possible to adjust the design of the map, and I encourage it. My sketch leaves out interesting landforms, details, etc. and merely focuses on level order and general architecture. I would expect whoever designed the map to add in landforms as they see fit.

It's a very flexible map. I don't want designers to feel restrained by any means.

WhiteYoshiEgg: It's not 100% finalized, but it would be ideal if we could put it there. It was discussed at length in the Screenshots/Videos thread. Sorry, we should have let you know. As for the graphics, they're nice, but I think we'd want something just a tad more detailed. I recognize it's hard to do that with such limited space, but something like Pikerchu13's old graphics might be more ideal given the nature of this hack (should really dig them up as a reference).

By the way, someone linked an image made by you (I think) yesterday on IRC. It was basically a map that looked like something out of DKC (an image with dots), 1-1 at the top, and the lives counter in the bottom left corner. Are you familiar with this? I'm wondering if something in that style might be a better choice for the map, even.

Shrug.

Yep, that's my work. I'm not sure if it would be feasble to use something like that in SMWCP, though, since a) the letters are sprites and would take up ((number of letters)*2) OAM slots, b) the letter graphics would take up 3/4 of a sprite graphics file, and I'm not sure if we can sacrifice all the tiles I had to use for that in SMWCP2 unless there's an OW sprite ExGFX function in LM I overlooked, c) the text is meant to not overlap layer 2 and I don't know how good it would look when it did, and d) although the patch I made isn't that big, I'm under the impression that every byte counts now.

Just some points to consider - I'm not strictly opposed to the idea of having that, though. (also wow those are some badly-worded sentences)

I'll probably leave the graphics making to someone else, by the way. Still considering making the overworld itself though.

Also, if the moving of Arboreal Ascent is final, it'd be great if you could let me know so I can adjust the ending part and such.

Looks like a great concept for an overworld. I can't help you out on the situation, however, since my drawing skills are pure shite, but I do wish you guys the best of luck on it. I'm looking forward to the results, during and after production.

WYE: Definitely sounds like more trouble than it would be worth. Alright, that's fine then. I'd love to see you design the map though .. or at least, I'd love to see you take a shot at it.

I guess we'll need someone to draw up a bunch of 16x16/32x32/8x8 decorations that I listed in my first post then. Hopefully someone takes it up.

For Asteroid.
Question, may be a bit off-topic, but how did you do the sketch, S.N.N? I usually do my overworld sketches on paper with pencil, looks like you painted it, but it doesn't look authentic. I'm not sure, I was just wanting to know.

For the reason I completely forgot to claim a level or something, I would be really happy if I could design a part of the overworld for this hack ;)
I think I'm good at overworld designing, I'm also making overworlds for many german hackers.

I've had these graphics for ages now and done nothing serious with them.
I am definitely in favor of Extroble's overworld set. It has a lot more depth compared to the original SMW's graphics, and it would make SMWCP2's overworld stand out a lot more.
Originally known as A Yoshi (2006-2009), Aquifer (2010-2011), and Azurik (2012-2014).
Yes.

I have nothing more to say.

Reminds me of VIP5's overworld. Looks great! I say we use it!

I like it too, but would you willing to draw some additional stuff (namely, the stuff I listed in my first post)? If so, I think that would be great.

EDIT: Already mentioned it on IRC, and he's up for drawing some more stuff. Here's a list of submap details I've compiled. Once all of these are in the ROM, we can start building the map.

(Feel free to add in anything I missed.)
I'd be more than willing to design (at least a part of) the overworld. Don't bother asking me to draw any graphics for it, though. That's not my forte.
I'm definitely willing to do graphics and to design the thing. (Well maybe not too sure about doing the additional details but I guess that's because it's something new to me) I have made at least 2 overworld tilesets and idk if it's good enough but here's one: (not posting the other since I'm not a fan of it anymore : P) Big Link Btw I didn't make those mushrooms. (The pic is big since I made it for SMBX) Idk if it's good enough, but I could make something else though.

But if anything, Extroble's would probably be best used, it looks very good and I'd say it'd probably fit with the SMWCP style since mines mostly SMB3 styled.
I think that both of those GFX sets mentioned look great, but might I suggest combining the two?

I love to design part of the overworld and/or some submabs. Overworld design is one of my favorite and more skilled aspects of SMW hacking. I'd like at least some participation in this collab outside of my failed level from a while ago.

Also, is there a range to how many people you plan on selecting for designing it?
I only want one or, at the very most two people doing the graphics. As for DESIGNING it though .. well, I guess we can have however many want to do it. There are six submaps and a main map, so .. seven?

If I can't get that many, I know there are some people who are more than willing to design the whole thing. Overworld creation seems to be a popular task (probably because it's actually really fun).
