The Overworld

I have this sudden idea that I will forget if I don't post it now.

For world 9, maybe it should just be a spacious void, or a magical swirly background. And, all the level tiles are on floating islands that has a special graphic that represents the level. Like a mini version of Super Mario Galaxy.

I actually had a similar idea a while back. Before it was determined that the dream world would start out happy and surreal, then devolve into horror, I had a thought that the map could be, say, a fluffy pink back area, possibly clouds or just a gradient, with all the levels being within bubbles that depict generalizations of what the level's theme is. I still put that idea forth!

Hrm...what if the background changes with every level done? Goes from fluffy pink to devouring hell.
I always thought it would be interesting to start the map off with a very simple but pleasing minimalistic abstract painting (mostly just lines, circles and the like), then gradually add in more complex and twisted elements with each stage completed until it becomes a sort of bizarre, uncanny surrealist nightmarescape. Having the submap's palette switch after Reverse Universe (as once proposed in the past) would be a simple but effective way to add to this process.

Wouldn't this rely heavily on events ? Not that it's a bad thing, but waiting for 10 seconds while the submap changes may be slightly irritating for some players.
Else, submaps changing along with a player's progress is an idea that needs more love.
One event per level. Each level would reveal a bunch of different 16x16 tiles at one (eg. the map starts as a white void, or something abstract as RN said, and it slowly fills in with color and tiles). Reverse Universe could simply invert the palette or something.

I actually think it's an awesome idea.
Where exactly is RU located in the world 9 level order now after all has been switched around so much?

So... this place's going to be like Ness' Magicant?

That's a really good idea, and I'd like to see RN's proposal in action.

Along with the floating islands with landmarks from the level?

And leod, it's the first. I think.

.. then reversing the palette doesn't really sound like something that'd have much of an impact..

Wait - it's the third. Euphoric Eminence is the first.
well i have to admit that the overworld design looks good. Looking forward to seeing it in gameplay.

Whats going on with the OverWorld, is anything getting done? when will work resume on this?
FACTORY GRAPHICS

Unshown here: animated conveyor belt, smasher, lava (although that is more appropriate for the fire/ice world i guess)

Also, this thing:

was kind of meant to be a viewing area of sorts for Norveg, hanging down from the ceiling (aka the top of the submap), which seemed like a thing that would appear in a factory to me, but after drawing it I tried to look one up and realized that I seem to have made them up entirely.

If anybody else has a better idea for Nexus Norvegicus on the map, please say so. If not I will probably replace it with some big ol' machines.

Edit: Also those path corners will probably have to be replaced. I thought there was a path 16x16 to make turns like that but there is not.
Looks awesome. Can't wait to see it used in an actual submap.

Question, though: Did you ever do that foundry/incinerator thing with (yellow and bright!) lava that I'm sure we went through on the IRC once? I think it'd be a nice unique decoration for the parts around Incineration Station.
aran - Graces of Heaven

I received the gfx for this yesterday and it will be in the next base rom update. Looks good Extroble, keep up the good work. ^_^

World 8 GFX are inserted as well as the completed map for world 3 and 5. Whoever wants to take a stab at World 8, go for it. GFX are sitting in slot FE and FD(animation)

So, remember how I proposed that the World 6 map could us a few more floating islands, so that it more closely reflected the geography suggested by the stages themselves? Well, I was fooling around a bit with seeing what I could do to that effect, and here's what I came up with:

This makes the lower right corner into a nice little archipelago of islands as suggested by the BG in various stages, plus makes the cloud caverns a bit more logical by linking them to the only rocky landforms seen on the map, and connects the castle more explicitly to the ruins seen dotting the floating islands.

For what it's worth, there's also just enough space left of the graphics file (and slightly more still if we replace the runty looking graphic currently serving as the castle) to allow us to add a wee little 16x16 blimp, if, say, we wanted to imply that there's an entire fleet of our mighty airships, rather than just the single specimen currently seen on the map.

Does any of this appeal to anyone?

I just wanted to add.

I watched the youtube video and this looks awesome. I was thinking would it be too much trouble if lets say the blimp or the floating islands bobbed up and down a little. I mean if these objects are really floating wouldn't it be cool if they actually did even if its done subtlety.

I would like to remind everyone that we still need someone to make the World 8 map. Tiles are already inserted to the latest base rom.
I contacted Extroble a little while ago and got a preview of the world 7 map tiles which should hopefully be done soon, so expect to see that in the near future.

There is a such thing as originality, so why not keep this viewing area. Norveg doesn't have to be there parse, but we could always utilize silent events to do something like this:

A Silhouette of Norveg could be watching Mario's progress throughout the factory. By the time Mario gets to the Semi Final level, we could take advantage of Silent Events and have it so that an event tile is loaded in Norveg's Silhouette to make it appear he's not there, thus giving the player the impression he's moved to "Nexus Norvegicus" to take care of business himself. <-Just an idea.
Do you guys still need a world 8 map designer? If not, I'd love to finally do something for this collab.

Yes we do. Everything you need should be in GFX file FE.
