Making a Yoshi's Island hack.

Hello! Now that I've gathered enough information about the current editor, '' Golden egg '', and some neat, handy tools, would anyone like to start a Yoshi's Island Hack? :)
I could help you if you want, but I'm trying to experiment w/some things in the game. I started over, and I am trying to make a test level b/c it seems like everyone is really strict like they want everything to be changed, and they want everything to be perfect. I tried to draw some level icons, but I'm not very good at drawing in YY-CHR, if you know what that is so I'm asking my friend if he wants to help me draw the level icons. I just need help coming up w/good level designs.

Also, I heard texahor or however you spell it was making a new editor.

Edit: I don't want to assume a moderator role, if you know what I mean, but I don't think you had to make a thread for this. You can just PM me if you want, but like I said I'm not like really professional w/Eggvine and Golden Egg yet.
Alright bro, I just sent you a PM.
The rest of this site has a rule against making a thread just for asking for other people to work with you on a hack, but since a post like that wouldn't really fit in the YI hacking stickied threads, this thread can stay. It's not like this forum has many active threads anyway.

Though just so you know, SMW team hacks don't succeed very often, and YI will be even more difficult than SMW since I don't believe Golden Egg has an option to export/import levels... If you're motivated enough, go ahead, but just thought I'd make sure you know what you're getting into.

Geez, please take it easy. I didn't know that we couldn't post threads about asking people to help make a Yoshi's island hack.

People will soon see all of the effort I put into this Hack. :)

PS: You can close this thread if you want, like you said, It's not going to attract anyone. I'm sorry I posted this Thread.
I know. I already told him I didn't like want to assume a moderator role, but I told him I would try to help him. I'm not sure how we will send the levels back and forth since it won't let you save them in Golden Egg. I tried to PM him back, but I tried to preview it before I was going to send it, and then I lost the whole thing. He said he had some good level designs.
Good luck on the first collaborative YI-Hack ever.
I will not take part in this adventure. Not that I think anybody would expect me to, but since I'm posting in here... No, seriously I might have taken part in case I had any good ideas for levels left and also more time at hand in the future.
As Zeldara said, pretty hard to do the level-stuff, I'm afraid you need to extract/insert the raw data manually from/into the ROM.
I'm going to watch this project's going-on with interest, though (that is, in case it survives).
But in secret I hope there will be a fifth complete YI hack soon (or sixth in case Jeorge finishes his hack before this one).

I'm sure we can plan around the faults that Golden egg does not yet contain, ( or Eggvine, if needed ). I have some pretty neat Ideas on how to send levels back and forth, but It's not 100% stable.
Hhhmmm let's see, I can contribute part of this.
At least, some technical parts... such as exporting levels to other roms, yeah I have the patience to do that. Just don't expect the job done quickly...

(aside from that, keep in mind I have my own hack in the works as well)

Let's see what I can do...
The levels could be extracted using a self-programmed program, but the insertion isn't safe in case some levels have been relocated. Doing this the manual way doesn't seem too satisfying to me, 222 levels exist, so 444 "blocks" of data altogether (assuming you change every level). IPS patches increasing by version can be a solution either, but are not 100% safe either, considering the risk of two levels overlapping due to relocation.
A little manual work can't be avoided, I guess. Or you must communicate about every teensy tiny thing you edit and have a file for used and unused space in the ROM. It especially becomes difficult, when you guys start arguing about level design. The easiest way to avoid this is to assign certain rooms to certain persons, so all the others aren't allowed to complain. However, this might lead to weird style turnovers within rooms or levels and affect the difficulty curve (which, I gotta admit, isn't perfect in my hack, too).

Thanks for that information, Yoshi Fan, really much needed!

Doggy, how you plan to get around with the Technical Parts?

Is it just me or is there a sarcastic undertone in that sentence...?
Anyways, in case some of you need to know how to find and extract the raw data for your needs, I can tell you. Just in case you need help with that. Or maybe some other things, but the only thing I might contribute is info, I will not actively work on the hack. I can't help much with ASM-related stuff, though.

Uh, no, that wasn't sarcasm.. O.O

But anyways, we'll be sure to ask for help when we need it. :)
Then I apologize. It's just that I tend to rant sometimes and then I get the feeling that the post is out of place and might be considered to be annoying of sorts. Thus I thought, that you would consider my post to be annoying so I assumed you were being sarcastic.

I'm ranting again #w{=P}

Also, 2000th post wasted.

Haha, no need to apologize, my friend! It's perfectly fine!

Heh, what do you mean by, '' 2000th post wasted '' ? Do you tend to make each post worth the reason?

Anyways, to stay on topic, would an non-unique level design be considered okay? As for the first few levels, I would consider implementing non-unique levels, and further in the game I would start considering to use unique levels, just so the player realises that the game will start to get abit... tricky. I'm not exactly sure if you know what I mean,
I agree. That's what it seems like is happening in my game. I don't want to play Let's Play Kamek's Revenge or Dr. Kaizo Mario to0o early in the game, if you know what I mean, but then people say I don't have enough good level designs or good puzzles. I want to save that for the middle of the game and towards the end.

How do you send the levels back and forth and extract them? I thought the only possible way so far would be to either e-mail the IPS patch or the ROM back and forth or can you copy the level data directly and paste it from one ROM to another one? I think I tried to do that once, and it didn't work.

iZackefx- What tools do you know how to use? Have you tried the music inserter and map editor by Texahor at all? I can kind of use YY-CHR, but like I mentioned, I'm not good at drawing level icons. Do you want me to ask my friend if he could help w/drawing the icons? He doesn't have an account on here though, but I could ask him if he wants to register here.

Also, I've used Translexation and the Entrance and Mid-Ring editor as well as Y-Compress. I don't know any ASM though.

Also, does Golden Egg automatically expand the levels if you go over the normal limit or will it like corrupt the other rooms? I've heard you can only use like 64 screens in each room in Golden Egg, and if you try to use more, the level will get frozen. That kind of limits you if you want to make a giant level or puzzle, if you know what I mean.

That's not what I said. I said that there's a rule against posting threads asking people to help make a SMW hack, but I'm pretty sure that rule exists because the SMW hack discussion forum has a stickied thread specifically for that. The YI hacking forum doesn't have a stickied thread for that (and I can't think of any reason why one would be useful here), so this thread is fine.

That's not a limitation of Golden Egg. It's a limitation of YI itself (something to do with the way the layer 1 tiles are stored in memory, I think); using either Eggvine or Golden Egg won't allow you to get around it.

64 screens is more than you may think, though-- remember that there are some large complex puzzles in existing YI hacks.

Alright, thanks, Zeldera109.

Lespna1, I'll send you a PM of what tools I am able to use.
I hope this isn't a bad bump. but can you please leave this thread open? Well, I don't want to give anything away yet, but iZackefx and I started working on some levels so we are hoping to post some screenshots soon or maybe a video.
