New Super Mario Bros. (NSMB, NSMBWii, NSMB2, NSMBU)

I don't see a discussion thread for the New Super Mario Bros. series anywhere, so here is one.

I've completed New Super Mario Bros. Wii 100% and am working on doing the same for the original (I don't have a real DS; I'm using a ROM and DeSmuME), and they're both great games, if you ask me. Considering how platformers seem to be a dying genre these days, it's nice that at least one of my favorite video game series ever is still going even in 2012. I do think I like the Wii one a bit better, though. I'm not really sure why...I guess the levels are probably more fun on the whole, although there are also more levels that I hate. (It didn't help that there are way too many secrets in the DS version that require the #$%#[email protected]! mini mushroom...) I like both of them, although I'm not sure where I'd rank them in relation to the six (S)NES games. The first time I played NSMBWii, it felt somewhat like SMB3 to me. I do wish the physics had been less loose, though...and I wish the secrets had been less "Guide Dang It". (It doesn't help that unlike SMW, both NSMBs had no indication which levels had secret exits.)

I am definitely looking forward to New Super Mario Bros. 2 and New Super Mario Bros. U, although I might not get to play them until probably 2014 or later. (I never buy video game consoles as soon as they're released.) NSMBU looks better than NSMB2, partly because of the emphasis on coin collecting in the latter...that just sounds like a recipe for annoyance to me. If there's one thing I don't like about the NSMB games, though, it's that we haven't had more than one for the same console. We have four games on four different consoles, compared to the NES (SMB1-3) and the SNES (SMW, YI, SMAS)...and so far, those are the only games for the 3DS and Wii U that I'm interested in, which definitely means I won't be playing them for a while.

I know it's too late (NSMB2 and NSMBU will be released this year), but what would you like to see in the upcoming two games? Some things I can think of:

- No motion controls except in places where they're actually necessary. Seriously, in NSMBWii, I can understand tilting the remote to make a platform tilt, but shaking it just to spin-jump or pick up an item? Why, just...WHY?!
- Indicators of some kind on the levels with secret exits.
- On that note, more fairly-hidden secrets in general. I'm not saying everything should be too easy to find, but there was stuff in NSMB and NSMBWii that was in places I very much doubt I would have thought to look. The mandatory powerup use necessary in NSMB (less so in NSMBWii) was also really annoying.
- Both secret levels (like in NSMB) and a secret world (like in NSMBWii). So, basically, world map like SMW (at least for NSMBU), with about the same number of regular levels per world as NSMBWii, plus the secret W9, plus x-A, xB, x-C etc. On that note, I'd like to see some secret ghost houses, towers, or even castles.
- New music for underground levels. Seriously, is it just me, or are there way too many remixes of the one from SMB1? This could apply to any level that uses old tunes (including ones from NSMB[Wii]), but this one really stands out.
- A new world theme or two. I've never really had a problem with the typical clichéd video game settings (grassland, desert, beach, forest, etc.), but I still think it would be interesting to see something completely different, maybe even something that has never, or rarely, shown up in a Mario game before, such as ruins or factory.
- Secret bosses. I don't know if that's the function Reznor will serve, but it would be cool, wouldn't it?

I swear I had some other stuff in mind, but I forgot. I certainly like what I've seen so far of the two upcoming games (baby Yoshis with different powers? Interesting...).
I'm really not looking forward to NSMB2. The first game was ridiculously easy and broken (the latter due to the Mega Mushroom's ability to kill any boss in one hit), and the Wii game fixed that, but NSMB2's gimmick just seems...stupid to me. Woo hoo! Coins! Now we can get to 99 lives in the first 5 minutes instead of the first 10! Oh, and the Mega Mushroom is returning, so I am expecting more breakage. Also, I watched the trailer on my 3DS and the 3D is less than impressive, to say the least. In fact, I hardly noticed it, which is quite a shame, as good usage of the 3D can make a game look simply amazing. So yeah, I'm probably gonna pass on this one, but when we get more information on NSMBU I'll be sure to check it out.
Definetly Ruins. And re-use more SMW themes. The SMB1 themes are overused and we need balance (SMB3 is the only game so far to not have the main SMB1 theme though 64 only had the intro)

EDIT: Actually, I want a level editor as well. If not now then next game. The Wii U is perfect for that sort of thing.

1. The game focuses more on the Coin Rush mode, as in 1 vs 1 competitive gameplay. Since it's the first time iirc in a 2D platform Mario game where two players can race to the end of the level, which to me sounds like a great idea.

2. A lot of lives do not mean little to no difficulty. The game itself might be so difficult that you will need to collect coins constantly in order to win.

Either way NSMB2 looks like a good follow-up to the NSMB series and I'll definitely get it once it comes out.

(I'll post something about the series as a whole later; too busy right now)

I would like tighter gameplay, Mario felt too bouncy to me, more in the Wii version than the DS.

YES! Unless they give us a crappy one like Nintendo usually does.
They need to bring back a wider variety of stuff. I only saw stuff from the SMB 1 & 3. No SMW at all. I would like Star Road, Block Palaces and Fortresses along with the original stuff, but that's not going to happen.
There's actually been a fuckton of stuff from SMW in the trailer for NSMBU, like the Boo Circles in that Starry Night level.

I cannot agree enough. I'm just as tired as you are of hearing the same underground theme remixed countless times. Don't get be wrong - it was a good track, and the remixes are nice too, but it's such wasted potential. Any Mario-based game which has had a unique cave track has generally been awesome (Yoshi's Island, anyone?). I also agree with your complaint about world theme. There's nothing wrong with the stock worlds, but it would be pretty wicked to see a change of pace for once.

As for the games themselves, I've only played a small part of NSMB and I've only made it to world 4 in NSMB Wii. They're fun games, but I can never find the motivation to play them for some reason (I partially attribute that to my general lack of motivation that comes with getting older I guess).

It would probably be based around ease of use and technical limitations. Obviously, on older platforms especially, certain objects simply aren't compatible with one another

Am I the only one who really isn't all that crazy for these New Super Mario Bros. games?

"I have no words that would do justice to the atrocities you commit to the English language, as well as your continued assaults on the concepts of basic literacy and logical reasoning."
Maybe I've just become worse at video games recently, but I actually had a pretty hard time with the first New Super Mario Bros. game. The physics felt...different from what I was used to, and I think that's why I suffered, especially in the endgame. I also remember the Star Coins being more trouble than they were worth, but that's just me.

NSMBWii, however, went much better for me, save for the Star Coins. I was more adapted to the NSMB physics, so I had an easier time (I even beat Bowser's Castle in one run, I think).

If anything, I feel a bit more excited for NSMBU than NSMB2, if only for the fact that I had a much better experience with NSMBWii.

As for any new stuff I'd want to see, I'd also love an in-game level editor in either game. I also agree with wanting a different underground theme.

Boo Rings were in NSMBW.

I'm up for a soundtrack with more than just SMB1 remixes, but I doubt it would contain anything from Yoshi's Island since it's *ahem* a Yoshi game.

That being said I'd love to see some SMB2 songs remixed, especially the underground theme. In fact, anything SMB2 being brought back that hasn't would be great.

Another thing would be a map style similar to SMW, with more focus on exploration, secret paths, and making your own way to Bowser's castle. I'm hoping NSMBU has something similar to that, since it has several other similarities to SMW.

As for the NSMB game series, I thought NSMB was good, if a little easy. NSMBW I haven't gotten to far in but it's been a lot of fun so far. NSMB2 I'm still looking forward to, though that seems to be a YMMV thing right now. NSMBU I'm looking even more forward to, and since it's a WiiU launch title I'm hoping to get a WiiU for the holidays.

All in all I'm satisfied with the new line of 2D Mario games, even if they're easier than the original four games.

Which would be anything that's not an enemy or ability, I believe, unless you count the stopwatches in Paper Mario

I should probably rent NSMB2 through GameFly when it comes out. I think it should be better than the original from '04.

For NSMBU, an original Wii U launch title later in the year, it might not be good according to sales because of the high price on the new system.

On the contrary, the game should make the system sell. 2D Mario sells a lot.

As for NSMB2, I might get it if its cheap on the eShop. As for NSMBU. Might as well get it too if I get a WiiU at launch.

I think Nintendo reduces the 3D to about 1/4 the max in all of the downloadable trailers, and it can only be on or off. When your slider is on at all, it's at that reduced state, and there's only that or no 3D at all.

I'm 99% sure it'll be the same price on the eShop as it is in stores.
Both of the upcoming NSMB games look quite intriguing, especially with the introduction of so many unique additions such as the variety of coin gimmicks in NSMB2 and that subaqueous ophidian struthioniform (a.k.a. the thing at 0:21 of the NSMBU E3 trailer). As with most people I am excited for NSMBU more than NSMB2. And my reasoning is the progression.

NSMB2's main gimmick is coins, and the goal of the game besides stopping Bowser and his henchman is to collect 1,000,000 coins right? Well, sure that's cool and its fun to run around shooting gold fireballs at enemies and collecting coins from a golden Lakitu, but besides that bit of fun what is the purpose to progress us to collect 1,000,000 coins? Unless there is some hidden objective they are keeping covert until the official release I don't see what will create the objective, and what will inspire us to go for this absurd amount of coins. Coins are ubiquitous in the Mario universe already, but they're not there to taunt you to collect them, to tease you into the thought that they are part of 100%-ing a level. They are there for aesthetics (who doesn't love seeing gigantic golden disks when taking a walk in the park?), but more importantly, an auxiliary treat (if that is the right description), and a miniature reward, actually, a form of progression in themselves as they guide you through the level over tough jumps or barrages of enemies, as they have always been in the Mario universe. So now with this new coin gimmick, Nintendo has technically turned a coin, a cute omnipresent gratification, into a collectathon.

That's my take on the meaning of life NSMB2.

Hmm. . . not sure what to say so I'll just stop talking. . .

You know what I think? I think that they should uhhh..........I don't know.....er-I KNOW! They should GIVE THE GAMES A REAL CHALLENGE!!!!! Going through New Super Mario Bros. Wii, 'tis a utter disgrace! As if the game exists to taunt my skills! That particular game is NOT hard but ANNOYING! The game is so easy, that it's hard to FOCUS! You'll literally become overconfident over its child's play and run into the enemy.
More things they should do is give characteristics to the quests. Though, New Super Mario Bros. U seems to have this, it may end up being "Grass, Desert, Beach, Toxic Forest, Arctic, Mountain, Sky, Lava/Magma; each world has one tower and one castle; sea of extra lives; Peach gets kidnapped, and the Mario Bros. and two random, bland kinopios( toads ) have to save her; SAME MUSIC. AND SAME BOSSES DERP-A-DERP*!!!!!!" I'm sorry, but I belive the rest of the future Mario side-scrollers will have this awful plague and will never change it completely. But at least Nintendo is adding in new elements and old ones in the games little-by-little making them look fresh in some way. I don't fully believe that the worlds in the Wii U version will exactly be the same. Hopefully the Stary Night level will be in the game. And hopefully (by the looks of it) the last world will be a forset (AKA: Something diffrent.) And hopefully, you can play as other characters for P3 and P4, and HOPRFULLY A DIFFRENT STORY WILL BE PRESENT SO IT WON'T BECOME MEDIOCRE!!!!

*At least Reznor is returning.

Raging hard over nothing, eh?

And I love how your definition of "different" means "move it to a different slot."
