In early June, I first unveiled the sequel to Donkey Kong Country: Boss Blitz at C3. Loads of progress have been made since then, and it is almost ready to be released, so I thought now would be better than ever to give everyone here an update.

EDIT: Released. Download it here. (apply the IPS to an unheadered DKC2 v1.0 (U) ROM)

The first thing you observed when reading this thread's title is that the game is no longer titled Donkey Kong Country 2: Buccaneer Brawl, but DKC2: Brigand Barrage. My reason for this is that Buccaneer Brawl is extremely overused as a title. Just look at the Google results!

Here is a video: DKC2: Brigand Barrage - Kreepy Krow in 1:05.13

...and screenshots:

The title screen, now implemented in the game and reflecting the name change.

The Options menu. Unlike DKC: Boss Blitz:
  • You can choose to play as a two-player team or alone.
  • The "Active Kong" and "Maximum Number of Kongs" options have been merged into the "Kong Select" option.
  • There is a new "Boss Select" option which allows you to choose a single boss to battle in addition to "All", which mimics the behavior of Boss Blitz.

There is little difference during game play in comparison to the screenshots I posted at C3, except that the timer no longer displays a preceding zero if the time is less than ten minutes.

The results screen displays more information in this game than in Boss Blitz--the hits taken (marked with the bandage icon) in each battle are now reported along with the total amount. On the right is the alternate version of the screen seen after you fight a single boss. New records are displayed in blue, which leads me to the next feature:

Record times, along with the data related to them (selected Kongs, game play mode, and hits taken), are saved to battery-backed memory! I wanted to do this in Boss Blitz, but I rushed to get it finished before college classes resumed in the fall. This screen is display after the results screen, and it can be accessed from the title screen.

Records can also be deleted using a prompt accessible from the title screen:

Press L at this screen and... BOOM!

The records are gone!

I really like those boss battle modes. I have played DKC2 on Emulator but I still have DKC for GameBoy Color (I know, it's a port from the SNES). Actually, I think more games should have a boss mode. I'm looking forward to playing it. (Also, yes, I've found this by following the "Psst.", since I actually never leave the YI forum =P )

tehaxor69 has been working on one for YI, but hasn't been online for months... Also, I'd love to have one for the RPGs Paper Mario and TTYD, too (is N64 and GCN hacking in your portfolio, Mattrizzle? =P ). However, for those two games, it'd be necessary to allow for free status manipulation or for the ability to choose an existing "Mario", who fights the bosses, meaning nothing may be sacrificed to create the boss mode.

Thanks! Hopefully, you will be able to play it in about a week or so; it should be finished then.

Yeah, for the Paper Mario games, you would have to be able to choose from all of the equipment and badges, as well as have the ability to adjust Mario's experience level between each battle. There would also need to be a way to prevent buggy/game-breaking things from happening, such as if the Goomba King is fought with any partner aside from Goombario in your party.

I've made GameShark codes for Nintendo 64 games, but nothing more than that. I haven't touched the GameCube.

Hopefully tehaxor69 is still working on that hack. I can't wait to play it!

--------------------
Yeah, when tehaxor69 released screenshots of the hack months ago, it actually looked pretty complete to me. The main problem is, that I think he's left SMWC... I guess he's into New SMB Wii-Hacking.

As for the Paper Mario games, I was sincere about the thing, that I'd like to have a boss mode, but I didn't mean it to sound like "Make one, Mattrizzle!"
I think a boss battle mode for such games like PM should contain every kind of boss: Jr. Troopa #1, Goomba Brothers (Red&Blue), Goomba King, Kamek, Chan, Koopa Bros, Jr. Troopa #2, Lee, Blooper, Buzzar, Tutankoopa, Electro Blooper, Tubba's Heart, Jr. Troopa #3, The Master #1, Anti Guy, Big Lantern Ghost, General Guy, Fuzzipede, Lava Piranha, Jr. Troopa #4, Kent C. Koopa, Super Blooper, Huff N. Puff, The Master #2, Jr. Troopa #5, Monstar, Crystal King, The Master #3, Anti Guy Unit, Jr. Troopa #6, Bowser, Angry Bowser.
Bringing them into a strength-wise order is recommended.

Very nice work, Mattrizzle.

What other games are you planning that use a Boss Rush type of gameplay?

I'm still finding bugs, so this isn't ready for release just yet. One bug involves the timer, which sometimes stops when it shouldn't. This happens when you cancel a team throw, for instance. Whether the timer ticks or not is dependent on the leading Kong's status, and I apparently overlooked that one. I'm currently in the process of documenting all of the statuses that the playable characters can possibly have.

As for your question: None at the moment.

It would be interesting if someone made a Super Mario World boss rush hack. That's just an idea, though.

Welcome back, LWares! It's a surprise to see you posting here again after all these years.

--------------------
What an impressive modification! The graphics and/or graphic edits are proffesional and so is the codings! Incredible!
But one question, is the game completely a Boss Rush?

--------------------
Perfection is something that requires something that incompletes it. Perhaps it also breaks itself.

The current avatar I have is from Neslug from DeviantART.

Yes, just like DKC: Boss Blitz.

--------------------
Seriously cool stuff, Mattrizzle!

I don't know what I'm more impressed with; the fights themselves or the amount of customisation you made possible.
A hack of DKC2? Very interesting. Really looking forward to this.

The feature I love the most is the timer. Will definitely try to speedrun the levels, at some point. :P
your'e missing a boss from the dkc2 advance version where they replace you rescuing donkey kong with fighting a giant kremling at the top of the tower

Yeah I don't think that's possible unless Mattizzle rips a large chunk of the GBA version's code and hopes that it's similar enough to SNES's code to somehow fit it in. But I'm just generalizing here and it will probably be alot more complicated then that.
Vinnyboiler is correct. It's evident just from playing the GBA version that the game engine was recoded from scratch. Even if you did manage to code the thing (a daunting task, as bosses tend to be the most complex objects in the game aside from playable characters), what could be done about making upscaled versions of the prerendered sprites? It would be more feasible to make altered versions of existing bosses, but that would be for another hack.

the patch!! (apply it to a DKC2 (U) v1.0 ROM)

Great work!
Since I'm not that skilled anymore like at that time, I haven't played through it just yet. But, yeah, works perfectly for me. (Also, the "MATTRIZZLE PRESENTS"-screen looks really cool.)

Brigand Barrage has been updated yet again. The biggest change I've made is to the cutscene at the end of K. Rool Duel. It now differs depending on whether you're playing K. Rool Duel as a single battle, or as part of the All Bosses mode. For the former, I've restored the cutscene to the way it was in the original game--the awkwardly-placed victory music cue is gone.

The latter is more interesting:

The active Kong's victory music and animation start just before Donkey Kong punches K. Rool. A few moments later, Donkey Kong turns to face his companions, using sprites and animations ported from DKC1. Finally, the camera's focus returns to Dixie and/or Diddy, allowing you to see the end of the victory animation.

Get it at the same link as the previous versions: http://mattrizzle.caffie.net/hacks/DKC2-%20Brigand%20Barrage.zip

I have to say! This is one of the best-done boss rushes I have ever seen! I love all of these features.

--------------------
Your layout has been removed.
Anyone can make a boss rush. But to make one as good as yours, with the amount of polish, extra effort, and extra oomph as you put in, is just awesome to see. I love this hack! ^_^
This is amazing work. DKC2 is in my opinion still the best DKC game (beating even DKC Returns). The game was well thought out and the bosses well thought out

I gave this a try, it was cool. I fought every boss individually with Diddy. Here's what I have:
