What's your favorite Sonic game?

Curiosity is killing me. What's your favorite Sonic game? Also, which is your favorite Sonic style of games: Classic (Sonic The Hedgehog 1 to 3 & Knuckles, DS Sonic games, etc.) or Modern (Sonic Adventure, Heroes, Unleashed, etc.) or both? Tell us your thoughts about those.

My favorites are Sonic The Hedgehog 2 (Genesis/Mega Drive) and Sonic CD Japanese version (Sega CD/Mega CD). I prefer the Classic style, but not the Sonic Generations one, because it doesn't have a pleasing acceleration feel like the old ones had.
My favourite would probably be Sonic Colours. It's a amazing game, I recommend everyone check it out.

As for style, I don't have a favourite style. I like both 2D and 3D.

Indeed, I played it recently and it was great! Its ambiance and level design are flawless. And using the wisps powers was very funny too. The only thing that I missed on it was the high-speed feel that is supposed to be in Sonic games.
I don't really like classic sonic games, but i loved sonic CD. It wasn't simply running to the right. If you wanted the good ending, you'll actually have to search the entire level for signs, Holograms, and thee generator/what ever it is.

As for modern games, Sonic Adventure 2 Battle is my favorite. I enjoyed playing the modern games up till '06, then i have ignored the games until Generations.

I don't like to consider it an actual sonic game but my most favorite among everything sonic related is Shadow the Hedgehog, for similar reasons as to why i liked Sonic CD, plus i like the branching storylines.

I should have something witty to put here (even if it's just to update dated info), shouldn't I?

Sonic 2, though I will acknowledge there being better games in the series.

You're right, that is one of the many reasons I love Sonic CD: further exploration of the levels. But there's one thing that makes me have goosebumps each time I play it: the way levels change when time travelling. Not only they have their design and style changed according to their timespan, each of them has unique music, which completely fits the atmosphere. The music change is even more noticeable in the Japanese and (if I'm not mistaken) European versions.

Ooooh damn, that's one hell of a tough question. I'd be a tie between two games, Sonic Unleashed and Sonic Generations (although Sonic 2 gets really close).
Sonic Unleashed has always been one of my favourite games ever. I loved the day stages, they were just fun to play. It's probably my favourite style of gameplay. The night stages, at that, I actually really loved too. It was something different for a change, and it worked out pretty nicely, if you ask me. Sure, they were too long, but fuck, I had a blast while playing through them. I still have to play the 360 version sometime though, but I don't have a 360 yet, so that'll have to wait. Also one of the very few modern Sonic games with a somewhat good final boss, if you ask me.

Sonic Generations I pretty much started playing around a month ago (thanks Steam), but I nearly 100%'d it, accept for two achievements. It's been incredibly fun playing through the game. Modern or classic: it was all executed perfectly and felt like a real Sonic game. Not only the level design and gimmicks were fantastic, but just having some of your favorite zones from most of the Sonic games remade in one game is just fucking brutal. Nostalgia all over the place, man. The soundtrack was beautiful, the graphics were just simply outstanding, and the replay value is really high, as there's almost always something to come back for (S-ranks, red star coins, time attacks, DLC etc.). So yes, most definitely one of the best games ever.

As for my favourite style, definitely modern. The 3D-styled gameplay was executed really well in most of the games, and switching between 2D and 3D is also nice, as it adds in some variation to the gameplay. Don't get me wrong: I really love classic-styled gameplay too, but I just prefer modern.

I also just picked up Sonic CD on Steam. I never got to play that, so now's the chance. Judging from the feedback it got already, I'm pretty sure it's going to be one great ride.
Sonic 1
Hands down
Probably a tie between SA2 and Sonic Heroes. Sonic 3 was pretty good also.

Edit: and Level Up!
Sonic CD for 2d games, Sonic Advance 2: battle for 3D games.
ask me if i give a f*ck...
Sonic 2 was the first video game I ever played, so it's probably my favorite (it's also the longest 2D game if you don't count 3 & Knuckles). My second favorite is probably Sonic Heroes. I know a lot of people don't like that one, but I seriously think it was done very well for a 3D Sonic game.

*high fives SNN*

I forgot to mention the hilarity that is Sonic Adventure. I love that game purely for the badness that results from playing it. It is not mind-numbingly difficult like 06 but the laughs from the odd cutscenes and gameplay are great. I personally have DX for my computer.
