Maybe I could take this level ? That would be my chance to contribute to the project... although I'm known to be bad with updates and I don't really show off my designing skills, I might be able to pull off something cool.
I liked where you were going with it. :/ I don't suppose you could post the graphics in case someone wants to pick it up
Ninja EDIT @Lemonade: If you don't think you can complete one single level, then I can't give it to you. Not trying to be harsh, but we really don't need any more set-backs.
The Sadness/Depression theme is pretty tricky to convey in SMW, expecially from a level design point of view. I could have made any old level (and I'd be finished already).
My first idea was to build the level around a feeling of loneliness and hopelessness, putting most of the challenge into the layout of the level rather than enemies and having the only sprites on screen being unkillable. This took a long time to get right, after various experements with vertical and layer 2 levels but eventually became the first section of the level. The latter part is supposed to play into the "post apocalyptic" part, though I believe thematically it needs some improvement.
The level design isn't complete enough for me to post a patch, to be honest. I'd rather do that kind of thing with a fully playable and complete level. I guess I could post some screenshots if you need something to look at, but I still don't really see the point (I could use any old level and post screenshots of it, right?). I'm not really sure why the updates are such a thing. At a point where a full build of the level is complete then I'll post a patch to test and improve it.
But regardless, here.. Nope, I haven't worked on palettes and don't have a background yet. A couple of grapical things need fixing. I honestly don't believe a screenshot is going to convey anything of the level on its own, expecialy one missing several pieces...
If everything goes to plan I'll probally post an actual patch after a few days since I have most of the level planned out at this point. Then I can actually improve on the design.
In starting the level, you should always start out with some form of a written concept of what you want to accomplish. Sprite Choice and Level Layout is going to be the most important part of this section of 13B.
From what I saw, most of the sprites used don't convey sadness or depression. Also, I have no idea of the concept you are trying to come up with. There are many concepts off the top of my head that can convey sadness or depression. Examples: death, cemeteries, wastelands, graveyards, desolation, darkness, etc. Choose one and go with that.
As far as updates, the reason why they are important is because everyone wants to know how far along the level is coming. Full Builds are okay but the problem is if you make a full level and find out there are a lot of problems, bad conceptually, or you have to remake full sections of the level, then a lot of it will have to be redone. Whereas if only a small section had to be redone then it's only a small section that needs to be fixed. An update doesn't have to be screen by screen but it does need to be something that is significant with progress.
While I haven't seen the level yet myself other then the few screen shots posted, I do agree we need to see more updates on this, I know I've been bugging on IRC a lot about this level, but I'm not the only one wanting to here about progress on this.
I'm going to be reinstating the "one-update-a-week" rule, not only with the level designers, but with the boss coders also.
I'm tired of seeing this hack stall out progress-wise.
I'm opening this back up to whomever want it. Pheno doesn't have the motivation to work on this much from what he tell me, so if someone else wants it, come and get it. Be aware you will be asked for weekly updates.
