To expand on jesse's post, to do this, right click a face with a texture (must be flat)

Select the texture button in the menu that appears, and select projected.

Now, in the texture editor, use the sample tools to click the texture you made projected, and fill every face connected to it that has the same texture with it. It will line the images up so they are perfectly even.

it doesnt even have to be even, simply click "show hidden faces" on sketchup->view
Well... "something went wrong" is a bit of an understatement...

As you can see the entire model fractures up upon importing. Any ideas as to what went wrong?

This is what the map looks like in Sketchup so far (house area only - Toad Town itself is still under construction)

you textured backfaces i guess.
Did you use the obj exporter from sketchup pro? If so download and obj exporter plugin from online.

dont do that. it'll mess up the uv mapping
Make sure to triangulate the model while exporting it.
Don't worry the one I use exports texture maps / uv maps too. Won't get messed up.

Thanks igiuLmuinelliM, it works a lot better. Test imports work well enough so far, seems to lag a bit inside the house though - I'll look at getting it sorted out.

And kazeshin, I only texture front (white) faces. Everything works now I've got the right plugin.

Inspired by BroDute and his "Kedama Takeover" hack, I had a go at creating roads and signs for Toad Town. Not sure if it works as an idea, I'll have a proper look when I'm finished with the model.

For now, you get this:

Thoughts so far are very much appreciated! #tb{^V^}

That's cool. Maybe you should add cars and sidewalks so you can cross the street with the custom traffic lights too, so the cars can stop and then you can cross the street.

Sounds like a really good idea - if only I knew how to program it all!

I've seen the custom traffic lights on a video - would it work with three lights? (red/yellow/green)

And yes, I've started on modelling the sidewalks and crossing points already. My idea was that Toad Town would be faithful to Paper Mario in the layout, but have the themes of both a real life town and the original SM64 game. I hope I'm striking this balance well so far #tb{:p}

That could be done on a single texture if you know how scrolling textures and proyected textures work together.

Hey, welcome back again Eggs! Still moving slowly on your project, do ya?

Having a mixmatching town theme stage is okay, also this remimds me of mine's version (without traffic panels and spotlights, I scrapped them since my custom textures were swapped to SM64 ones after importing).

Easy, make a 32x32 picture in paint, separate it vertically into 3 sections, Red, Yellow, and Green. Color your stoplight and position the texture so that it fits larger than the stoplight, then group the light together and enter the number of polys and import the level.

This guy knows #smw{:TUP:} but i would make it with 3 lights, each one with their on and off color

I could probably do with being walked through the whole traffic lights thing - perhaps some pointers? #tb{:)}

Toad Town is coming together nicely, here's a little snap for you lot:

Again I'm not sure about the whole signage thing, but other than that I'm really liking how it's coming along. What do you think?

UV mapping is a bit off in some places - I'll fix it soon.

EDIT: 20 March 2015: Hack cancelled, personal life just gets in the way of progress too much.
Many of you will not be surprised by this, after such little progress in three years.

Once again my apologies. If anyone wants to continue such a project then feel free. Sayonara #tb{:)}
