"Dracula Blocks out the Sun"
Hack Name: "Dracula Blocks out the Sun"  - 172.5 kB - 27 downloads.
Length: 1 Level
Author: levelengine - Submitted by: levelengine
Description: Dracula has set up a sun blocking machine so that night will never end. Out of all people, Mario decides to sail to Dracula Peninsula and go after him. This hack was made to ring in the Halloween day and bring out the darker aspect of SMW hacking. Enjoy.

Cutscenes: Advance these with Up.

Password system: You may occasionally see groups of four digits in base 8 (octal). Record these and use them in the password room which is in the blue door in the first room to jump back to where the password appeared.

Boss Fight: Dracula

Pretty boring title screen.

Not so great menu palette.

I think the flames should be ExAnimated. (Can't tell by the picture.)

This P-switch is very high up and had a very hard time getting there just in time. Also, hitting this P-switch while falling is asking a bit much. It's either that or hit the spikes.

Grey fire. Odd.

This almost looks like it belongs in Kaizo.

Suggestion here: You should make the ground ExAnimated to move left or make the ground a block that pushes Mario to the right. Plus, this part just consists of jumping over spikes and bullets which isn't the funnest.

I see original Mario!

This part is VERY HARD.

Wrong camera relative starting position.

The BG palette... Plus, fire usually moves.

That fire is sitting on nothing.

The main flaw with this hack is throughout the entire thing; The level design. It definitely has potential, but is just way too difficult and long with no way of beating the hack save stateless. It demands precision jumps while avoiding multiple enemies multiple times with other various obstacles. There are a lot of tight spaces with the same problems. Overall I found the hack more frustrating than fun. I'm not trying to be a dick, I'm just telling you exactly what happened.

At the end when you beat Dracula and flee the castle, every time you enter a new room the music starts over from the beginning again which gets redundant quickly.

I'm sure I missed more since this level is not linear, but the point was made.

The plot of this story is just explained a little at the cabin level, but see no hint of this sun-blocker anywhere else or is even mentioned in the cutscene sequences.

I understand your points pretty well.

This hack was kind of rushed near its completion, which was meant to be October 31st.

One of the additions was the password system, which would mean that you don't have to beat it in one go. Enter the blue door in the first room of Dracula's Castle to access it. If you input a password that you see somewhere in the level, you can just jump back to that point using this innovation. (Unfortunately, there are no passwords after beating Dracula, so if you fail on the evacuation part, you'll always end up doing the Dracula room again.)

It was still a good thing for me to read this.
