See the problem here? The problem isn't that Youtube's layouts are becoming worse; instead, it's that the people using Youtube. I rather like the new design, honestly. It's clean, simple, and intuitive. Every year or so, we go through the same thing: Youtube changes their layout, people bitch and moan, Youtube fixes the things people complain about, then everybody shuts up. But you know what, I'm tired of it. If you want to go back to the original layout, be my guest. Hope you're happy with an ugly, crowded layout from 2006, because I sure as hell wouldn't be.

The new layout doesn't seem to bother me to be honest. I for one don't mind simplistic-ish layouts, but then again I don't mind seeing a decent non-simplistin scheme. Take SMASociety for example - lots in it but it all works really well together.

But when it comes down to it. Do we really need an amazing colour scheme for something which pretty much all you do is watch videos on? Of course we have YouTube channels which are another focus of the site, but they can be customised anyway. Another example of what I mean would be Google - has pretty much always kept a three-colour layout: grey, white and blue (minus the logo letter colours). All you're there to do is search for stuff (most of the time anyway) so what's the real need to have a complex layout?

Now, there is the point of taking the idea of not needing a complex layout too literally. Most sites seem to get the balance of simplistic and usability right - while some don't. I think it depends a lot on what the site is about.

Another item I could include in the minimilstic category is Microsoft's 'tile' design on Windows 8 - but this thread is about YouTube.

So, overall I have no problem with YouTube's new layout - I'm only there to watch videos. So why be all glossy with the layout?

My biggest complain is the video pages's layout. The video's almost in the middle, and too much shit is everywhere. I really want a cleaner video page layout.

The main thing I dislike about the new layout is how it isn't even centered. How does Google think that's a good idea??

I've never, ever been bothered about the video layouts. At all. (in fact, they have massively improved over the years) What bothers me is the newish channel design. Seriously, it's really, really cluttered, and got rid of the features that made the second layout great. In fact, I'm one of the few who didn't complain about the second layout. There was a minority there that did like that layout.

However, I think most of us will agree that the third layout is just bad. In fact, if you look at YouTube's official video on it, just look at the amount of dislikes there are.

Clearly the Youtube community is an intelligent, open-minded group of reasonable, rationally thinking individuals who are considerate of the need for change.

THE CYCLE OF LIFE:

1. New YouTube layout. Everyone who hates change in the slightest is out for blood and wants the old layout back, even if the changes are benefical/minor/reverted through easily appliable CSS.
2. Everyone gets used it and loves it.
3. GOTO 10

I myself like the new layout; works a lot better for me, and it almost the same thing.

i for one like this new youtube layout it promotes homosexuality while still being clean and safe (the white background)

the red represents heterosexuals. you notice there is a lot more white than red. this references the strong number of gays appearing throughout the united states and other countries.

Not really that big of a fan of the new YouTube layout, but I guess I'll get used to it over time.

I'm not even going to complain since I know I'll be over it within a few days.

i've had this new layout for a few months now. as i did with the layout before it. i can honestly say the only thing that irks me is that the main tab on the home screen isn't my subscriptions but it's one click and then you're there. honestly i hate it when people bitch and moan about a new redesign for a site. youtube is always more convenient for the viewer each time they update it. so why people think they have to go on rants about specific features they think "don't make sense" is beyond me.

and if you were like me and had the new layout starting a few months ago, you can agree with me that it has been improved on a lot already.

So... you say the problem isn't the layout, but the majority of the people that use the site? I disagree with that statement. But yes, the cycle of emotions and disappointment have been exactly the same. Each layout has it's benefits and cons. I would have to say this one has more cons than pros. The all white scheme does not help Google/Youtube's case at all, along with the amount of disorganization.

Um, as far as I know, Youtube has always had a pretty white interface. I'd spice up the conversation with some race jokes, but honestly, you guys are taking this too seriously. It's Youtube, for Absent Ministrator's sake. Who really gives a crap. I think it's fine.

Talking in general about the interface's color, including the channel's past ability of changing color.

Ok...and why does everyone care so much about colors? Youtube is actually a place for videos. If you want colors, may I suggest Paint.net? It even provides hex codes for them!

It is just not colors, personalizing is the key factor here. They just are not taking away colors, but the creativity people could be implementing into their channels, to make them unique and appealing.

That doesn't take away anything. IMO, channel bgs looked ugly as crap with the repeated images. Even without that, I don't see why you people have to get worked up over every little thing, when you can sit down and watch your video with no hassle (well, as long as your browser can use Flash correctly). Why does a BG have to look nice for you to watch someone's videos? Can't you just test one and decide based on the video, what you were meant to watch? Apparently not. If we all just calmed down about it, Youtube is just fine.
