S****horpe Problems

Link Thread Closed
Have you ever personally experienced any profanity filters messing up innocent words on any sites you visit, maybe with hilarious results?
CoasterCrazy censors the word
dick
so of course Charles Dickens would be written as Charles ****ens, which messed up a URL, as seen in this post.
I've also seen a message board that messed up Alfred Hitchcock's name because of the word "cock", so they outsmarted the filter by typing Alfred Hitchc0ck.

The only big one I can think of is the Pokémon GTS censoring Pokémon for keywords in their own names so you have to give them nicknames.

1)Cofagrigus (error code for 'fag')
2)Conkeldurr (error code for 'con')
3)Bulbasaur (error code for 'sau')
4)Ivysaur
5)Venusaur
6)Sharpedo (error code for 'pedo')
7)Croconaw (error code for 'con')
8)Nosepass (error code for 'ass')
9)Probopass
10)Froslass
11)Marshtomp (error code for 'ars')
12)Skuntank (error code for 'kunt')

there are probably more but I can't think of any.
Once on a Drawn Together forum I was posting in a thread asking what music you listened to and of course one of the artists I put down was 60s classical composer Van Dyke Parks and of course guess what part of the mans name got censored.

I already knew about Cofagrigus, Marshtomp, and Skuntank, but some of these take the dirtiest gutter mind to figure out or are they in another language? (Talking about sau and con).
Also I was thinking they pulled the filter due to the complications.

Last time I tried it still was enabled though that was a few weeks ago.
Tetris Friends has a few hilarious censored words.

Jesus is censored for some reason. If you type it in the chat you get a kick warning for profanity, I think. It kinda sucks since it's forced every online game, even private ones.

Bum is censored too, but ass isn't for some reason.

They had a few other words but I can't recall them.

Also on Dragon Quest IX, I couldn't name one of the characters I made (modeled after Poo from earthbound) "Poo". So I had to name him P00. #lm{sprhead}
Starcraft II's censors are good, so I've never encountered this problem. However, typing in "buttmonkey" will result in it getting censored, "butt" by itself will pass. Probably a joke by the programmers.
Pokemon TCG Online has a very derpy filter. It filters out some Pokemon names, and has even censored FA (short for full art). It also has a tendency to filter out the most random or mundane sentences for no deliberate reason other than a glitch in the filter.

Generally it's not a glitch in the filter but a possible offensive word in another language.

Why would anyone put a profanity filter in a Drawn Together forum? They might as well put one in a AVGN forum.

Anyway, on Steam there is a game called "Stealth Bastard Deluxe" and Steam forums have a profanity filter. As a result when anyone tries to say the name of the game, they get censored. It's really bizarre to censor the forums but allow a game called "Stealth Bastard" through.
I've seen this happen a lot with media much more than anything written. There are some songs with innocent words that get filtered in a very odd way.

For example, the song "We Are Young" by Fun has the entire phrase "higher than the Empire State" removed on one of the radio stations in my home city. The result is the first verse goes:

'Give me a second, I need to get my story straight.
My friends are in the bathroom getting______________'

Sense made.

Other classic examples are certain movies having computerized voices replacing curse-words with more family-friendly words. I was watching Back to the Future on some random channel years ago, and every 'fuck' was replaced with 'fudge', every 'shit' with 'shoot', and 'bastard' with 'bad guy'. And it was replaced with one of those really old, grating mechanical voices.

It's also fun seeing this happen to rappers when they do censored live performances. Eminem had to have half of Slim Shady censored when it was on the radio in my home city.
I haven't really dealt with any profanity filters while on the Internet. I have, however, searched "warcraft" on Google images back in high school and finding that word blocked (because WoW and school don't mix). And I'm all too familiar with how TV that isn't the major movie channels censors everything...

This is why I hardly ever watch movies on basic cable channels.

Take Hancock for example. One of Will Smith's catch-phrases in the movie is "Call me an asshole, one more time." Now, watch the movie on some basic cable channel like FX, and I guarantee you that you'll hear "psycho" in place of "asshole." I understand it's for censorship purposes, but it also kind of wrecks the entire flow of the movie for me. Same goes for most other movies shown on basic cable with moderate to heavy word censoring.

As for stuff on the radio, I almost always have my iPod plugged in to my car while driving, so I never really worry about what the radio's censoring.

I find it even worse when they remove entire scenes for this reason. For example I was watching one of my favorite movies on TV once The Shawshank Redemption and the best scene in my opinion is of course the part where the sisters take Andy into the projection room and I guess there's no crisp way to phrase this but they wanna put something not very nice in his mouth. Anywho Andy responds by saying "Anything you put in my mouth you're gonna lose." I'm not sure what it was that Boggs threatens to stab him in the head with but then Andy comes back with the best comeback ever "All right. But you should know that sudden serious brain injury causes the victim to bite down hard. In fact, I hear the bite reflex is so strong they have to pry the victims jaws open with a crowbar." then not wanting to chance it they kick the crap out of him. There's absolutely no "bad words" in the scene and obviously you can't actually clean this scene up by just changing a few words so in the TV version they just cut the whole thing out so you just see them pull Andy into the projection room and immediately it cuts to them beating him up. Needless to say I just threw in my DVD of the movie after I saw this.

MTV Rocks (one of the UK MTV channels) did this too but they also censored the last part where it goes:

So if by the time the bar closes
And you feel like falling down
I’ll carry you home tonight

Instead of those lyrics, you hear NOTHING!

I've also seen stupid censoring in music games like the Guitar Hero and the Rock Band series. In Band Hero they censored 'whiskey' in Don McLean's American Pie which means it goes like:
"And them good old boys were drinkin' _______ and rye"

WTF?! #smw{-_-2}
All these stories just remind me of unnecessary censorship but companies are truly insane sometimes. I just heard "glad you came" on the radio with the every instance of the word "came" cut out.

The sun goes down
The stars come out
And all that counts
Is here and now
My universe will never be the same
I'm glad you ________

Annoying.

My friend told me that when naming your character in Pokemon Black, you can't name him Dick (and that's an actual name)

But you can name him Jackass.
