So, here are a few guidelines you are obliged to stick to when submitting a hack to the
YI Hack section.
General Hacking:
-
Use a North-American 1.0 headered YI ROM as basis
- Avoid cutoffness
- No eye-searing palettes
- No plain, boring areas, offer some entertainment
- Don't use alterations of original/already existing levels and act, as if those were "your" levels
- No glitchy messages (includes black boxes and faulty scrolling)
- Check for warps to level 0x00
- Look for other glitches, especially Item Memory is important
- Make sure to make all collectibles accessible and do not place more of them than you can get
- Make sure the player cannot get stuck; at least make it possible to suicide, even if preventing it from happening in the first place is the best way to go
Demo Hacks:
- Place something like "(Demo)" in the title
- When uploading a new demo, delete the old one
- Make sure there is some sort of major progress from one demo to another, if you still want to release demos quite frequently, open a thread and release them there.
- In the description, write down the changes since the last demo
Full Hacks:
- If your Hack is underlength, make sure the player cannot reach any unedited/faulty levels and the transition is somewhat smooth, the best thing is to end it at the regular end of a world (or edit the map if not)
Translations:
- You can also submit translations of the original game or hacks (if you do the latter, ask the owner of the hack for permission)
- When submitting it, make sure to leave a note somewhere in the hack title, for example "[Translation:{language}]"
- The level length is equal to the amount of playable levels in the game, a translation of the original game has 54, for example.
- Every kind of accessible text must be translated (in most cases: All types of Message Boxes, Kamek Speeches, Level Names, Opening Cinema Sequence, Text after Bowser's Defeat). Most of the GFX-based text must be edited as well (such as: Nintendo presents, File/World-icons, Controller Configuration). However, some things are very hard to edit, thus they are not required (such as: GOAL!, Bonus Challenge, YOU WIN!/YOU LOSE! (Bandit games), PERFECT)
- In case there is not enough space for the translation of GFX-based text, use abbreviations
Hack Submission:
- Add a few screenshots of nice places in the hack
- The ZIP-folder may only contain an IPS file and some sort of a README file. Also, make sure the README file only contains appropriate content; don't link to a ROM download page or something like that
- In the description, give at least a brief overview of the hack's features and what makes it different from the original
- The level length of a hack is the amount of accessible custom levels; in a demo, please make any unedited levels inaccessible
- Only use fitting tags; 5 should be enough
In case you are unsure about something mentioned here, you can always ask me.
Feel free to discuss about more guidelines or an alteration of these mentioned above in this thread, hoping for fair guidelines, which are as strict as required but at the same time as permissive as possible.
