Kaizo Trap Ideas Thread

2 new trap idea:
1. Put a adult green yoshi that his mouth is right at a green berries and the timer is 0. Mario will have to find way to remove the green berries away to get the yoshi.
2. Put a small room like this and set the timer to 1:

G: Green berries
C: Cement block
P: Midway point
S: Starting potition
M: Muncher
0: Empty Space

Mario must have a yoshi to obtain the midpoint & release his tongue right after enter the room. If not, the game will freeze (Yoshi will accidently eat a green berries and timer will try to add 20 seconds to the game, make the game freeze).

PS: These 2 ideas will be used in my hack.
I'm going to ignore the near half-year bump...
A Kaizo Combination Lock which requires you to land on a P-swtitch, keeping you alive.
While working on my CLDC entry, I had been thinking that Chomp rocks and reversing gravity blocks/patch could be potentially useful in a Kaizo setting.
One basic use for a Chomp rock could be having to ride one across a Muncher pit (that's so much harder in SMW than it is in YI and almost impossible to do savestateless).
One major catch: some sprites (particularly ones that take up multiple tiles) will glitch when used on the same screen as Chomp rocks, which limits their use somewhat, and you have to be careful because they run over and defeat most enemies.
And for reversing gravity blocks, remember that most enemies can't be jumped/spin jumped on and that most (if not all) sprites don't have normal interaction while you're upside down, so that closes some doors and opens others.
Probably too many ideas to include in just one level.

With regards to soko's kaizo trap...

Couldn't you touch the goal sphere in a way that you land on top of the 50 block as you touch the sphere? I believe it's been done before in other hacks.
Did I forget to make sure the red Munchers were instant kill from the side? I didn't think it mattered until now.

i had this idea for a level where the point is for the player to kill mario after the midway point that is at the beginning of the level

i'd imagine it'd be very tricky to design because most sprites were made with the intention of hurting mario and i'll have to suicide proof the parts mario can go

im also thinking of using cement blocks on the bottom row of LM and adding unmarked invisiblocks above it's not an original kaizo trap but its justified in that if it were a pit mario could just suicide on it and its therefore a good substitute

Or better, try making it so you, powered by midpoint, get another mushroom before commiting suicide. The mushroom must be on a block away from sprites and hurt blocks, obviously. It may be overused, but I think you can make a nice use for it.

well, i really dont see me putting the mushroom in a block so it must be in some unavoidable location and later when i force mario to take damage (carefully so mario cant suicide on it) the player must do some manupulative screen scrolling to prevent it from auto-falling in a location where it is impossible to avoid and thus will prevent mario from entering a small door

we'll that is one such idea.

Super Puzzle World 3 actually beat you to the punch on that one. I think SMPP5 also had one that involved glitching yourself into a wall via an offscreen message box. There's still plenty of creative ideas you can make with it, though, and bonus props if you can do it without glitch abuse.

That one's probably not the best idea. Invisible coin blocks and hard-to-notice/unusually-acting blocks are what have given Kaizo hacks a bad reputation, so the abuse of them is generally frowned upon.

your right i shouldn't do that. instead i will find another method to force mario to restart the level that doesnt involve dying

Here's my trap:



DISCLAIMER - Before anyone says anything, I have permission to be using the red and green blocks.

The red blocks are solid for mario, but sprites can go through it. the green ones are just the other way around, and the upside down clouds will keep you from getting out
Well, I've thought of Kaizo Trap on layer 3 tides, munchers at the bottom of the screen, 3 vertical dolphins where you have to create bridge of invisible blocks in order to get mushroom to pass turnblocks.

Ice blocks are Mario-only and Red "?" Blocks are sprite-only, green "?" blocks add 20 seconds to time limit.

EDIT: Fixed. Now you can't collect mushroom below first invisible block, I've added sprite-only blocks that don't make mushroom collectable and fix break.
