One of the things I find startling about Chinese culture is how little this spreads. There were horrible landslides last year and a tsunami in the north if I recall, not to mention crazy schoolgirl knife murders, and it receives little/no news coverage. If the equivalent thing happened in the West, or even something with a smaller toll (ex. recent bombings), it would galvanize the media.

I'm not sure if its the west-centric attitude of American media or the Chinese government's total indifference to the atrocities occurring, but it's very strange.

The latter prolly. If they insist on censoring the net to the point of literally being controlling, not allowing anyone to know about the earthquake, I am not surprised if anyone has carried out an assassination attempt at least once.

How am I so creative? I think taking walks might have something to do with it.

Sheesh. I never even knew this until now. Makes you wonder why, even considering the tragedy that happened last week, this never made the news in my city. Or the radio. Or anywhere BUT here.

I pray for the best for those afflicted by this.

Me: Look, matey... it's pronounced ARK-EE-YUS. Got that?
Dude: Ok, you make Arse-ee-yus sound dumb when you say it that way.

Cracked.com has an excellent article detailing this phenomenon, which is known as the Monkeysphere. Barring a few absolutes and purporting hypothesis as complete fact, the article describes why this is pretty much the case, and I recommend that you give it a read.

I'm glad that not too many people died in the earthquake.

China is pretty overpopulated, so I find it great that only a few hundred people got killed.

How come it only affected thousands of people?

An earthquake like that should have affected millions.

All in all, there was a much lower amount of fatalities and injuries.

I, for one, am glad.
