Mario's Deadly Adventure

Link Thread Closed

Kaizo

I'm working on a Kaizo Hack named Mario's Deadly Adventure.

Here's the latest version.

Features:

- Edited overworld
- No Muncher Spam
- No Concrete Spam
Try my Kaizo hack!

I am a Bug Tester, Play Tester, and Proofreader.

Will accept other hacks.

Currently Testing: Nothing!

PM me if you want your hack tested.
Your hack looks a lot nicer than the average one-block hacks, but I do have to note of the large amounts of things falling through the sky (and spammage of boos in level 107). It seems the hack quality could be improved with maybe some custom palettes, graphics, coding (as in things like status bar hacks), etc.

However, I still like the hack, and will probably do a casual play-through of it on my own time. Keep in mind my recommendations for v1.0.
Your layout has been removed.
Version 0.55 is out now. Some game-breakers were removed

Unfortunately, the overworld isn't working very well

Version 0.6, you guys!

Overworld altered, but not completely
Levels altered, a few in particular
Powerups removed from SPRING INTO ACTION
Title screen added
New intro scene lacking a playthrough

Oh, plus it works now.

Version 0.6.8 has arrived.

None of the planned features are coming in yet due to complications, but this version boasts level fixes and a new intro, complete with new ASM.

Here are my thoughts on the first level:
Besides that both exits lead to the storyline info, the level design is really boring. One easy Bullet Bill ride, and the rest only some Kooper and springboard jumps.
And I don't know why you put the midway point and the two red shells in the level they don't seem to be usefull at all, at least you need the P-Switch to complete the level.
Besides that get rid of the 1-Ups and some of the unnecessary Koopers, because otherwise some of the Koopers don't seem to appear and so you can't beat the level anymore.
Even though it's not perfect, the level is still better than most of the average Muncher Hacks so I would like to play the other levels as well. :)
Honestly, There's a lot of things that need to be fixed, But it'll take some time to point out every error.

That is not supposed to happen. I'll fix it in the next version.

Both messages say the same thing on purpose, but I'll replace the second with a cement block later.

That IS pretty boring. I see your point.

The midway point is supposed to trick you into getting it and then becoming stuck.

The red shells are needed to get through the turn blocks.

Wait, how did you get past the turn blocks WITHOUT them?

Okay. The 1-Ups are useless anyways.

Man, I wish everyone ELSE felt that way.

That link is to an outdated video of Daizo Dee Von trying (and failing) the first level.

Ironically, there are no dislikes.

Thank you all for supporting me and my hack, and I hope you all appreciate the final version.

Have a good day!

I think I was able to kick the P-Switch into them.

That sounds a bit insulting to me and not helpful at all.

Yep exactly, i used the P-switch for the turn blocks. ;)
Thanks for the updated version, I try the next levels tomorrow. :)

I wish more people read threads like this before commenting on hacks.

"Reviews" like that are just plain wrong.

It's not a review, it's a comment. You're not going to type "level design: meh, music: meh, graphics: meh, etc." into a YouTube comment.

Anyway, the reason for comments like those is that there's a lot of problems with this hack. The level design is bland and uncreative, the overworld is uninteresting and fairly empty, and there's nothing that really sets the hack aside from anything else. The idea is to make a level that's fun to play, not just difficult. Adding frustrating or unfair things like unmarked invisible coin blocks or pixel perfect jumps are boring and a major turn-away, and it doesn't help to have bland level design with the spam of a single block type or enemy.

Here are a couple screenshots to satisfy your potent curiosity.

This is part of the intro screen. Note the 0.8 in the upper-right.

Now here's screenshots from the first level.

Those used blocks were all invisible coin blocks.

Guess how you get past them.

Just a couple o' Koopas. No big deal, really.

Again, those used blocks were invisible coin blocks.

If you hit the rightmost invisible coin block (rightmost used block), the jump becomes all the harder to properly execute.

You get here by riding the bullet bills in the last picture.

Guess how you get through those turn blocks.

Yep. More invisible coin blocks hit.

There are more invisible coin blocks in that area, so you have more trouble jumping on the music block.

Yep. A springboard jump. The second level has a bunch o' these.

The P-Switch near the bullet bills (does not show in the picture, but it's on a cloud platform underneath the first one) is needed here.

It's actually a Kaizo Combination Lock, but it works like a regular Kaizo Trap. Intended.

Jump through the one diagonally adjacent without triggering it, going just above the bottom left corner.

I'm guessing this is meant to be done savestateless? I saw in your beta testing post you don't have any tools? What kind of emulator doesn't have slowdown, frame advance, and/or savestates?

The same way I did.

Unless this is an I Wanna be the Guy/Cat Mario style hack, I don't think the coin blocks will be very warmly received.

Just when I was beginning to suspect the intention of a savestateless Kaizo.
Guess I might as well see if the new version is compatible with my SRAM if there is one.

I've fixed that tool sentence now because you're right.

My emulator has those tools.

I'm gonna
re-
review your hack.
Okay, other than the eye-searing background, your title screen has some pretty nice ideas and it's neat! Maybe you made level 1 better!
Huh, it seems you replaced the springboard jumps with koopa hopping, which is actually standable! Good on you, Dip--*springboard falls past screen*
...
...FFFFFFF
Look, we get it, you like it.
Stop.
I got to the clouds, using a cheat code (cause I'm not dealing with the [impossible, because you put them lower] springboard jumps.
I then attempt to jump.
And attempt again.
Eventually it become impossible and... oh I get it.
You want me to jump off that springboard next to the clouds.
That's impossible to do, Dipalon. Sorry.
*cheats way out*
And this time, *invisible coin block*
Why.
WHY.
At least this time you were kind enough to add a possiblity of getting out.
I then pull off a tricky throw and bring the P-Switch with me.
Also, if you tap jump while running across the gaps, you can still do it.
And the screen doesn't scroll.
FFFFFFFF
Thankfully, I didn't need the bounce blocks.
I then runjump across, and--*springboard falls*
HELLO SPRINGBOARD GOODBYE SPRINGBOARD HELLO CHEAT CODE
I mean, this one is possible, but I'm not doing it.

Okay, I finished the level, with 47 seconds on the clock (+ CHEATING! Raise that time limit!) and I go to... spring into action...
UUUUUUUUUUU
Okay, so it's a mushroom race.
Cool*
*not cool at all
Okay, skipping past me actually doing it, you give me...
Yoshi.
LET'S SEE HOW LONG TILL WE THROW HIM IN A PIT
Okay, you give me a flower.
Problem is, it gives me a shroom.
Problem?
Also, that springboard jumping sequence.
YOU KNOW IT'S ANNOYING, STOP IT.
BE CREATIVE JEEZ
Next level is, turned on you.
...
You can't fool me, press ctrl-del.
That's all I can do.
I am done with this.
DONE.

You find the background eye-searing?

What would you suggest for the background instead?

So the springboard thing bothers you?

I see.

Impossible? #smw{O_O}

In this outdated version of the level, Daizo Dee Von does the springboard jumping.

But what if I've made it impossible by accident in the latest version? #smw{._.}

So, how can I fix it so that it IS possible, then?

More impossibility?

Daizo did that, too.

Watch this video.

It takes him almost three minutes to do it, but he does it.

That is the better way to do it, really.

Less risk of falling.

You have to scroll after you reach the end of the running segment.

You weren't supposed to need them. They were for a secret exit.

You must use a lot of cheat codes.

At least it's possible, though. #smw{^_^}

Yeah, that's what the P-Switch was REALLY for.
