ps3/xbox 360 controller with PC

does anyone know how to do this? before i go and buy one i want to know it will work. im reading that in order for the ps3 controller to work with pc you need to have an actual PS3, is this true? is it the same with xbox? and to use them does your pc have to have bluetooth or will the reciever that it comes with work? i want to use it mostly for emulators and for testing hacks of SMW and SM64. possibly for emulators on android too..
I don't know about PS3 controllers but I use an Xbox 360 controller with my PC (albeit a wired, USB one) and it works like a charm. You'll be surprised how many PC games are designed to work with the Xbox controller. A wired one will do you good. I wouldn't go with the wireless option since setting it up can be tricky at times.

The PS3 controllers can be a bit tricky. All Sony Dualshock 3's and Sixaxis' have wired as an option and that usually works fine, but if you press the PS button and a PS3 is nearby it will probably kidnap your inputs and only use the USB as a way of charging the controller.

There's also no reason to buy a PS3 controller unless you actually own a PS3, as they are still ridiculously expensive and most gamepad games are optimized for the 360 gamepad anyway.

[EDIT] It's probably not interesting but pairing a Sixaxis or Dualshock 3 via bluetooth to a PC is supposedly possible but last time I heard of it you had to turn off your console completely because of how aggressive the PS3 is with pairing the controller (which is actually kinda nice unless you're trying to pair it with your PC).
There are a few ways to use a 360 controller and the easiest way is to have a wired controller/plug N play cord because windows will see it as a 360 controller if you have windows 7 or newer other wise you'll need to find the drivers.

To use a wireless controller you have one option being a discontinued product called the wireless gaming adapter which will send out the radio signal needed for the computer to controller connection as the 360 controller is not Bluetooth. They aren't hard to find and are relatively cheap mine cost me $1 with $5 shipping.

For a PS3 controller though I won't be able to help you as I don't own a PS3 and generally use a Wii classic controller pro for my PC.

If you're curious about that I use this thing.

Just gonna throw in the fact that I run XP and my PC still recognised it as a 360 controller, making me think that the drivers are possibly already loaded on to the controller (or that I just downloaded them in a system update at some point).

Actually, the Play N' Charge does NOT work to play games. It does not send data, it only gets power <sarcasm>(because duh)</sarcasm>. I know this because I bought one with the expectation that it would work. It does not.

If you're still on windows XP, then it just downloaded them when you plugged it in. Win 7 and Vista sometimes need you to download the drivers separately and enable unsigned drivers (because Microsoft doesn't sign the xbox controller drivers? How dumb is that?).

The Linux kernel these days has drivers for Xbox 360 controllers built in and they work pretty fabulously. I've been using a wired Xbox controller for most of my games on Windows and Linux for a few months and haven't had a problem.

In short, as much as I'd like to recommend using a PS3 controller for a PC (Because eww, Microsoft), the Xbox controllers seem to just have better support everywhere, at least if it's a wired one.

I can't tell if on certain games, I'm having trouble with the controls because I'm just having trouble, or because the author really designed the game with XBOX360 controls in mind. That's how ubiquitous the blasted thing is, and it's a bit out of my budget...

I'd say most high budget third person 3D games on Steam right now (well, pretty much anything fast paced) were probably designed with the controls in mind (heck, some of them are straight ports) as well as a small handful of indie titles.

A general rule of thumb is that if the game is labelled as controller compatible, most likely it was optimised for the controller over the keyboard.

I'm actually kind of surprised by that cause the first time I ever used a 360 controller on PC was with a plug n play because I didn't have a wireless adapter. Also they do send data because you can play a game with no battery pack in if you have a plug n play in use.
I use to use a ps3 controller with my pc with a wired usb and also with
A bluetooth dongle wireless worked good with a program called
Motionjoy use to play pes once you hooked it to pc the ps3 wouldnt recognize
Ps3 anymore then I had to replug usb to ps3 to reconnect to ps3
