SONIC THE HEDGEHOG - THE NEXT GENERATION HACK THREAD

Sup Everyone! MSS(Or MarioSuperStar) Here! I'm here showing you my new hack, A Sonic Style One!
Here's the Story:

____________________________
Sonic's Son, Speedy, Got Bored Today so he went on an adventure to fill his boredom.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
SCREENSHOTS

World 1 Map(For Now)

Level 1 - Home Sweet Home
A Preview of the house.
Father+Son Love! How cute.
Awkward!!!!
The Bedrooms.

You see, There's at least one secret exit in each world. Here's the first one. Its a challenge level and at the end of each one lies a chaos emerald.

Challenge 1 - Special Stage #1
Jumpin' Over Light Blue Robobugs.
When Mecha Plants(To Be) Attack!
Screw it.
There's Super Mechs here, but I killed them.
Super Jump!
Chaos Emerald #1! Can't see it, check the next pic.
Better to see it now.

That's about it for now. I'll post about tommorrow with updates!
The graphics and everything look pretty nice but... Ow. The palette hurts my eyes:

^This should be fixed. I suggest darkening the colors and not using bright ones. And the pattern makes it hard to tell were the platforms are.

But besides the colors, it looks okay. Nice work.
When life gives you lemons, make lemonade. Or give them cyborg implants and conquer the British.

Alrighty, I'll take that in mind. Thanks for saying! Just to say everyone, The BG Color changes with the Chaos Emerald.
Oh god. A hack starring Sonic OC's.

But anyway, as others have said, the palettes aren't the most accommodating. Tone them down a little bit. And also, what you're doing in these levels is essentially the equivalent of making entire levels out of cement blocks. If you don't mind doing it, I suggest that you use real landscape tiles to build your levels.

But other than that, everything's fine. I'm liking the player and sprite graphics.

About a million years ago, I once had the idea of trying to make a Sonic game in Super Mario World's engine. I did not get far, mostly because I lacked a lot of resources that are available now.

It seems you are not making using of them, either. That makes me sad.

But on a more related note, I've seen refrigerator drawings that look more appealing than the shots you've posted. The bad palettes in combination with primitive, repetitive graphics make me wonder if I'm looking at the same screenshots you are.
Just to say! The BG of the special stage is equal to the chaos emeralds!
And, i have an idea. If i can make it, ill try to make the border of the OW the same to the chaos emerald!

So... What exactly does that change? It still looks like I'm staring into the Garden of Madness.
Status bar: Speedy's name color should be changed to something not used by the backgrounds so you can keep it as a constant. I think the name should always be cyan with a black outline.

Overworld: I like the tiles, as they really do have a Sonic vibe. That said, it's overly spacious. Would you be willing to add more decoration like grass, rock, more flowers and such around the paths to flesh it out? Good palette, also.

Speedy: His shape is good, but the palette makes it really hard to distinguish the features of his face. A more saturated, darker cyan, like your avatar, would look better here.

House: The tileset here is really bland. The thing that irks me most are the floor tiles. I'd suggest something more detailed and homey, like a wood or stone floor for character. A less saturated background would be easier on the eyes, too. Try drawing a stove where they're simmering some chili for chili dogs in the kitchen. #ab{:LOL:}

I think it's a good idea to have the beds be colors responding to the characters, but the beds aren't that easy to distinguish as beds. Here's an example and here's a more stylized example to help you detail the beds.

I feel like an extra line break would make the message boxes easier to read quickly, perhaps condensing to fit. Labeling all speakers would also be helpful. Don't worry about perfect formality in dialogue; what matters most is it sounds like something someone would actually say. I'd also suggest drawing an asterisk in for actions because that's more commonplace than dashes. For example:

MOM: Hi! How are
you doing, Speedy?
*kiss* Love you!

SPEEDY: Mom, you're
embarrassing me!
But thanks!

Special stage: Hmm... I think you should probably take a look at the Sonic special stages and consider drawing a new tileset inspired by what you see. I can't really judge the level design, but I see a lot of repeating things, which isn't good. We'll have to see how it plays out, though. The Chaos Emeralds could use outlines and a little more shininess.

I didn't see a speed patch in the patches section (or I may have overlooked it) so here, if you want Speedy to run faster:

Adjust $0D to your liking but be careful not to go too high as there are big caveats. I think it caps at $14 before it starts to cause problems with jumping. You can patch this with Asar or xkas. Save it as speed.asm or something.

I haven't looked at this patch yet but it does make the player lose coins when hit. This could be really useful in making a Sonic-style hack.

Lastly, try making use of Sonic ExGFX. There are a lot of rips from various Sonic games, and if you can draw what you don't have in a similar style, you're golden.

Good luck with your project! I hope it turns out fun.

Just look above you...
If it's something that can be stopped, then just try to stop it!
I'll probably use that patch! Plus, I've downloaded almost everything sonic here. Ill be showing screenies in about 2 days. My moms making me do chores so I don't have much time to make levels. Also, I've updated some sprites! I will show them with the screenies! Stay on the flipside!

We'll be looking forward to seeing the progress and hopefully improvements that you've made! This hack has a lot of potential, but the way it's being executed as of now isn't exactly grabbing me with a death grip of awesome. With some patches and updated graphics, this may have a chance at being a great hack. Keep working at it!

The idea is quite nice and all, but it the way it is pulled off is... I hate to say, but horrible. I know you've said you are going to fix some things up, but if I were you, greatly consider actually making some GFX. So far, everything looks like it is made from a single colored block that changes colors every stage or something. Use some ripped tilesets and BG's to give it more of a Sonic feel, Sonic is not a world built off of basically, cement blocks...

Now, after what you've said, I hope to see more promising screenshots, and any help you need regarding suggestions or providing something that is already on the site, I'm sure the community will help you out. That said, good luck on your hack as the idea is quite fresh and new. #w{=)}

Ok! I've added the sonic powerdown patch! I've also added sonic monitors! Plus, I've added most of the map's designs! Ill be showing tomorrow.
It looks very, VERY first hack-ish, if you know what I mean. The graphics are pretty terrible for the most part(solid green blocks? and that special stage BG, MY EYES!!!), but it seems like the hack might have potential. I'd try using existing ExGFX for starters (like others have said), as there's plenty of Sonic themed ones. I'd also open some tilesets from Sonic games in MS Paint or your image editor of choice. Zoom up as close as possible and study the general style of the graphics. Then, use your observations to make a tileset, that's the best advice I can give.
Eh, sure. Why not? Kaizo hacking doesn't seem too ha-aaaaaaand I broke the ROM.

I like the idea of the hack, but it can be a TON better.

- The Story: Sonic has, all these years, in his personality, tried to avoid Amy. Their having a son seems...weird.

- GFX: Do you want to make other people's eyes bleed? Players-gone-blind don't give good reviews, you know.

That's all for now.
Okay here's updates! sorry for waiting too long.

I've darkened Speedy's fur color, added monitors, and added some patches.

SCREENIES
I can't tell what the level numbers are, i forgot.

Im working on the boss, Eggman's the boss. But i need a sprite thats easy for a first world boss.
Any suggestions? Please let me know.
@ Conterfiet:

I've tried to put the Speed Patch in, but there was an error.

What do you think guys?
By the way, can someone make a userbar? Thanks if you do.
Oh, sorry MarioSuperStar. My mistake. Put a "db" at the start of this line without quotes:
Code
$EC-!xsp,$14+!xsp,$DC-!xsp,$24+!xsp,$DC-!xsp,$24+!xsp,$D0-!xsp,$30+!xsp
This should make it work.

In any case, the use of ExGFX is good here and Speedy's darkened fur looks a lot better.

The palette interferes with the status bar, but at least it's readable. You could try moving the background palette to an unused row and restoring defaults to the half of 0 or 1 that you're using for Speedy's name, or you could try changing the name color with the Status Bar Editor by choosing another palette for the name tiles.

There are some areas of the level where there's an excessive amount of empty space, such as the areas with a lot of slopes. The areas where you have multiple elevations, monitors, gaps, and rings all seem fine. I guess we will have to wait and see how the level plays out before making too many judgments, though. The parts that look boring may not seem that way so much with higher speed.

Just look above you...

Words cannot describe how much better the graphics in this hack look now that you've changed them. However, the level design seems flat to me. Are these levels beta? It seems to me that they're lacking in enemies and, more importantly, obstacles. You might want to read APPALLED to learn about using level design to create a challenge.

And, also, I may be wrong, but it looks like the status bar palette has been overwritten by one of the new GFX palettes. Either way, it doesn't look too good. I'd recommend looking into fixing it.

This is definitely much better from what you first posted, a very large improvement. Still, Speedy's head looks a little weird, it could be that dark spot on his forehead or something.
Your layout has been removed.
Okay, now Speedy's house is now bigger! There's more rooms, including the living room, kitchen, Speedy's bedroom, and Sonic and Amy's bedroom.
Screenies coming soon.
