I have something to tell you all. I really never started working on Super Mario Infinity 3. That's because I never will. And that's because the hack doesn't exist.

It was an April Fools joke.

I'm sure some of you were just playing along, but it seemed like a good amount of you believed my announcement. I even posted in there a second time, answering questions to make it sound more convincing. In case you're wondering, I don't really know exactly how to make custom sprites and blocks. I created those screenshots in Paint. If you did believe me, I'm sorry for falsely getting your hopes up. Hopefully I can make it up to you all with this announcement.

Just for the sake of announcing it (no, this isn't the aforementioned announcement), I'm revising SMI1 and 2 to remove some of the more annoying parts and generally improve them all-around. I'm not sure when I'll finish that (it's not high on my priority list right now), but expect it sometime in the near future.

Anyway, SMI3 may have been a complete farce, but I am working on another hack, and this one's not an April Fools joke. Reading and the Spy Invasion is my true current hack, and I can send you an IPS file if you demand that I prove it (not that I think you will, but I can).

So what is Reading and the Spy Invasion? Obviously, this hack has absolutely nothing to do with the Super Mario Infinity series. It stars myself (Reading), and I'm going for an entirely new style; I'm drawing most of the graphics myself, and RatSI will be shorter and easier than the SMI games. It'll still be much longer and more difficult than the original SMW, though.

One of the new themes I'm using in RatSI is the puzzle-based gameplay. The level style itself isn't too far from the SMI series, but the gameplay will overall be more puzzle-based than in my previous hacks, and there'll usually be some type of "thinking" area in most levels. I'm also making the levels non-linear; there's bonus areas in almost every level, and several levels offer multiple paths you can take, similar to that in SMI2.

Another aspect of non-linearity is the overworld. The game has a search-and-find aspect (I'll explain that in detail when I get to the story), and the levels are laid out so that there are practically endless different ways to travel through them, similar to the areas in Kirby and the Amazing Mirror. You won't see the levels on the overworld before you unlock them; you'll discover where they are as you go. A considerable amount of the levels have two exits, possibly even more than those with only one, but levels with two exits won't be marked with red circles-I'm using new level tiles and the red circles are assigned to something else. How will you know which levels have two exits so you can explore and find what you're looking for? Secret exits in some levels will lead you to a short level that contains an Area Map-an object that will reveal the locations of levels in one Area (Areas replace Worlds) and the directions in which they lead. To avoid frustration, in levels leading to a Map it's usually obvious the level contains a secret exit-the hard part is actually getting there.

The story of Reading and the Spy Invasion is vaguely implied by the title, but I'll explain it more now. The Four Creatos Avengos, that is, Reading, General Stuff, The Chipmunk, and L.D., work peacefully in a far corner of the Mushroom Kingdom, where we release the adventures of Mario with the Scepter by observing them through a magic snow globe. That ends one day when a criminal organization that calls itself Access De-Spied attempts to kidnap the Creatos Avengos to prevent us from doing so. Reading manages to avoid the kidnapping and sets out to rescue the other Creatos Avengos.
Reading eventually meets Violet, an agent of the Awesome People Organization, a group dedicated to fighting Access De-Spied, and learns that Access De-Spied is trying to keep the ancient Final Prophecy of Hadnoname hidden from Mario and his companions. Reading partners with the APO to find the Dimension Keys, treasures that will open the sealed entrance to Access De-Spied's hideout. The plot will develop over the course of the game as in the SMI series.

Also, if you want to know what this whole Access De-Spied thing is about, I'd advise reading my thread in MS Paint Abuse entitled "On the Shores of Whabiz Lake (revision)". Reading and the Spy Invasion is a sort of side-quel to The Hidden Scepter, taking place between the first installment and OtSoWL.

Now for some screenshots.

Title screen. I'm going to add a background to it sometime, but I'm not sure what it'll look like at the moment. I also don't know what music I'll use for it yet. Ignore the black square in the lower-left corner; that's temporary while I still haven't changed the intro movements.

The cutscenes from SMI2 will be returning, but in a slightly different manner; they're now scrolling rather than one-frame-per-level. The way I've set it up makes it quite glitchy if you don't do it exactly right, but I'll fix it in the future.

Message Blocks are in first-person like in SMI2. Reading doesn't have powered-up forms; instead he uses a health bar, and doesn't become small.

An example of different paths you can take in the level; you can choose either to jump to the platforms above or to slide down the slope.

This is a very simple P-Switch puzzle.

Second level. The Spin Jump-disable patch doesn't work all the way; you can still Spin Jump out of water or from a trampoline. Heh...

A pipe with two blue coins above signifies a Reset Pipe; if you mess up in a puzzle and can't continue, enter this pipe to get a second chance.

A block puzzle extends beyond this screenshot. I'm trying to incorporate several different kinds of puzzles into the game, and while I reuse some themes, I try to avoid overloading on any one kind of puzzle.

These Sensitive Bricks have changed their graphics in every hack I've used them in. :P

I'm just showing this so I can explain that I made this level a while ago...before I knew about the Purple Coin Challenge in Elementia. ;)

I'm normally not reusing graphics from the SMI series, but I thought the large castle bricks fit RatSI's graphics style well. I've recieved some complaints about the colored dots in the stones, so I've taken those out.

So I hit the switch to make those blocks solid, and then I climb up here and...wha?

The first screenshot in the SMI3 joke thread was inspired by this; as I explained in that thread, I'm trying to incorporate humor into the hack. RatSI won't have a particularly dark tone, but it'll have more of a neutral color scheme than the SMI games for more of a "natural" feel, which fits the game's environment.

You have one chance to get those coins!

Race to the finish! In this bonus area, how far you can get before the P-Switch runs out will determine how big your prize will be.

Whee...

This level, called Damp Dirt, reflects the natural theme. This is a wet, humid area with tall grasses and soggy ground.

Just showing the background in this level, and also the fish. It's just for decoration, but I like it for some reason.

Area 2 doubles as a sort of pipe area. I don't have the screen-scrolling pipes installed, and I'm not sure if I will, but I think I might put them in sometime.

You're told there's a secret exit in this level, but the way to get to it involves...let's say exploring.

Jumping over pipes...

What do you think? I'm going with a new style and taste in this hack, so I'd appreciate any feedback. It might be a little early for this, but if anyone wants it:

Comments welcome.
wow, this looks cool! And I thought SMI3 was a gag from the start, to be honest... But man, can you write stories! Reading looks cool, but one question: When he gets the "cape", do his tails extend?

--------------------
That looks cool. Can Reading spin like Tails? I imagine it would be relatively easy to implement by using cape mario's spinning command...

By the way, you cheated. The SMI3 post was on March 31! How was I supposed to suspect it was an april fools joke? :'(
Nice you got us there lol, that was probably the most convincing joke on these boards, I guess one good thing came out of it though, that being the idea of having surreal BG's, that is if they are possible at all lol.

I'll admit: you caught me off guard. I thought you might've been working on this in addition to RatSI, and you made it pretty convincing. O_o What I can tell you from what I've played is that this a really fun hack with a unique style. Userbar go in sig now.
Looks awesome. *generic comment*

One site I go to had an April Fools joke that started on Feb 22 last year. One day early is pretty valid. =P
Wow... there are so many people you caught off guard.

...that's an AMAZING April Fools joke. You even bamboozled a few moderators!

...As for now, so far your graphics and screenshots look nice, and I like the style. Especially your sensitive bricks. I usually use something bland for them...

Please tell me this hack won't be as hard as your other ones.

--------------------
It's not even close to Halloween, and already Christmas Sales are starting early!
Wow...dang it! XD that was really convincing, but still this looks pretty nice 2.

--------------------
I has posted again, horray ^_^

April Fools jokes are supposed to be funny or ironic, that was just plain a lie...

JK, I was fooled too and actually spent 15 minutes making that picture in my post XD

I don't have any complaints about what I've seen so far. This hack makes my colon happy. :D

sk26 Layout ~ V1.1

Doesn't work here, go away</a>

Well, it's original...

The graphics look nice. But giving Tails a green bandana doesn't make him a completely different character. I don't care what anyone says, that game stars Tails.

I don´t like how Violet looks... She looks kinda weird. Other than that it looks nice. ;)
I'm glad that the other one was a joke. In my opinion all the screenshots there looked horrible. :p
But the screens you have here are quite nice. There's only one thing that bothers me... why did you use such a big font for your cutscenes? Wouldn't it be better to have a letter be 8x8 instead of 16x16? With that you could put much more text on screen (which is helpful for a story) and it would look much better. (but at least, it is a improvement already from SMI2.) At the moment I imagine the cutscenes like this:

Quote
VIOLET: "READING! IF YOU CAN'T READ THIS MESSAGE, YOU NEED GLASSES."
READING: "UM,... 'K."

I'm not using the Fire Flower or Cape Feather in the game; just Hearts that restore Reading's life bar. Well, that's not entirely true: I am planning to use the Fire Flower for something special in the game. It's a secret. :P BTW, Reading only has one tail.

No, Reading doesn't have a spin attack, but now that I think about it, it could be possible to implement...I'll think about it.

I was going to bed at the time, and I wanted to post it then, instead of after school the next day when April Fools Day was already half over.

It's going to be easier than my previous hacks but still harder than the original SMW.

A green bandana, red fur, blue shoes, and one tail, that is. :P I thought a while ago that the character I created was too similar to Tails, but by then I had already established the character of Reading. I solved the problem (sort of) by creating a reason in the plot why Reading is so similar to Tails. It won't be explained in RatSI, though, you'll have to wait for something else.

She does look better on full-screen with a filter (which is how I always play), but that's the best I could do while keeping her size appropriate. I'll see if I can make her look better sometime.

In SMI2 the letters were 8x8, but they were spaced out as only one was assigned to each Map16 tile. I didn't want them to look spaced out, so I made them bigger. Having the letters closer together to fit more onscreen is something I did in certain spots in SMI1, but it took up a large amount of Map16 space and was a pain to assemble. If it would help me fit more onto one frame, though (I often have to shorten the text to make it fit), maybe I should try it out.

Thanks to everyone who commented, too.
oh, he does? well, that answers my question...

This looks awesome! Hacks that replace Mario are simply awesome! I like the edited Tail sprites by the way.
You truly fooled me with the SMI3 joke. I never would've guessed it was a joke, even with it being the eve of April Fools Day. It seemed too well done to be fake. In fact, I thought that this thread was a fake one and that you'd just decided to jump on the bandwagon of silly joke hack threads. Then I started reading into this thread more and realized I'd been had.

Well, this hack looks like it'll be just as fun and plot-driven as the SMI series. I wish you good luck in designing it!
You completely had me with SMI3. :O

Anyway, it looks nice from what I see.

Have the letters on the left of a tile on Layer 1, and those on the right of a tile on Layer 2.

Your layout has been removed.
You had me too. I couldn't work out how you fit all those tiles into the ExGFX files, yet somehow I thought it was legit. [/derail]
I like how you're drawing your own graphics. (Though, my hack is starting to lose its uniqueness because of that) However, they look kind of flat and 2-dimensional. You'll get better with time though.

I remember someone did this for a Crash Bandicoot hack. Giving Reading a spin attack all the time would be a better idea than limiting him to just jumping, which gets old eventually. And you could mix it up by making some enemies tail-killable but not jumpable, like spinies.
You fooled me too, Reading.
But yea, this hack looks good sofar. And I really like puzzles, so it'll be interesting to see what you can come up with.
