Reading and the Spy Invasion (song lyrics)

Standard

I for one did not believe it. I was expecting people to come up with phony hacks for April Fools Day. The "PhotoShop" backgrounds looked fishy to me, plus the part where you said "Tatrion and Supertails, don't give anything away, if you know what I mean" kinda gave it away. ;)

Nice effort though. I made a fake hack release (two fake releases in one day, in fact) thread a few years back, and several people believed it as well ;). That's because I included a previous demo of the hack, and just cut it off at the most recent point with an April Fools message.

This screenshot tells us what we already know, but other then that I have absolutely no complains. The GFX win, the levels look pretty win, and I'm definantly adding this on my "HACKS TO PLAY" list.

Off-topic-ish: I really didn't belive that there was gonna be a SMI3, one of the BG's looked like it wasn't 16-bit quality.
I think what Reading is doing, is making it as if you we're playing a brand new game if you get me, yeah we all know u can carry P-switches I think he's making it feel like you have never played smw before, also to newbies who actually haven't.

BTW: How did you get the 4 hearts rather than 3? I can't seem to figure it out, I PMed you.

I read that line as meaning that those two were beta testing for Reading and so he didn't want them to spoil anything. But yeah, looking back at those photoshop graphics, they look impossible to add.

Have the letters on the left of a tile on Layer 1, and those on the right of a tile on Layer 2.

Why didn't I think of that? Great idea!

Giving Reading a spin attack all the time would be a better idea than limiting him to just jumping, which gets old eventually. And you could mix it up by making some enemies tail-killable but not jumpable, like spinies.

Seems like a great idea. Now to figure out how to enable a permanent cape stauts. :P

Indeed, I knew the incredibly detailed backgrounds might clue some people in, and I wanted to see how many would believe it anyway. I guess I made it almost too convincing.

Yes, that's what I'm doing. I'm making RatSI more accessible to non-veterans, so I'm also making it so someone could play the hack without too much trouble even if they had never played SMW. I replied to your PM, hope that helps.

Tatrion and Supertails have already played RatSI and thus know I'm working on it, which is why I asked them not to give anything away.

Remember me saying the overworld was going to be non-linear? Click here for a picture of the main overworld without any events passed but with Layer 1 levels shown. There's going to be lots of paths between those levels.
Scientific genius!

Oh, the only reason I had advised against that was due to the fact that a hack got deleted, and that was one of the reasons why.

Also, that OW wins. It's liquid pwnage.
I am the Eggman! My current Egglayout is to support Sonic Robo Blast 2. I'll change it sometime in the future.
Listen to the SRB2 Soundtrack! It's awesome! AWESOME I SAY! Also, PM me if you ever wanna do SRB2 with me.
That OW looks like a delicious cake.
Reading and the Spy Invasion isn't my main focus at the moment, but I've been making some changes and I want to know what you guys think.

First order of business: I'm using a modified Forest Maze theme in the hack, similar to Supertails's modification but with a few differences; the major change is that the repetition of the first theme retains the lower accompaniment all the way through. You can download the SPC here and tell me what you think. My only real concern is that at the very end of the song, the instrument change sounds too abrupt, but that might just be me.

I've also switched my cutscene text to a smaller font with the advice of Pieguy and FPI. Here's what the first frame of the intro cutscene looks like now:

Much more efficient use of space, isn't it? :P

I originally used the Cyber Track theme for the castle in Area 1, but Supertails thought it didn't quite suit a castle, and I quickly found myself agreeing with him. I'm still not sure of what music to use for it. The Underwater City theme is an exception, but for the most part I'm only using songs from Mario, Sonic, and Kirby games. If I find another song that fits, though, I might use it. I don't want an intense theme for this castle-more like an intriguing theme, since Reading is exploring this castle without knowing what it really is, and the level itself isn't near intense. Any ideas? Here's the two screenshots of the level I showed, to help with ideas:

Today, I came up with the possible idea of composing a main theme song for RatSI, similar to most of the 3D Sonic games. It'll play on the title screen (that solves that problem) and will also be the final boss theme. Because of obvious technical limitations, I can't have vocals, but I'll probably come up with lyrics anyway (maybe I could display them during the credits).
The cutscene and castle screens look quite nice, but I have one suggetion. For the cutscene, try centering the text a bit more, as it would probably look a bit better if so...it may just be me though. :P

It's in the ROM map.

Jump to this address in the Hex editor and set it to 00 to make small Mario able to dp the "spin" command.

I agree. It would be probably a good idea to start the text not at the very left, but at the point where the "Px5" starts. Other than that, it's looking great, much better than before.

I tried enabling the "cape spin", but there's several problems. I should explain the power-up system in this game before I say anything else.

Reading is always 16x32, but when he starts a level, the game still thinks he's small-that is, he's considered small by the game but has a 16x32 interaction field. A Heart, in addition to recovering a health segment, will change him into what the game thinks is "big", albeit without a size change.

I enabled the cape spin for "small Mario", but that only works if Reading hasn't grabbed a Heart yet or is down to his last health segment. The same problems occurs for "big Mario"-Reading can tail-whip only if he's in the big status.

The main problem, however, is when Reading spins, it doesn't do anything-he just spins. It doesn't break blocks or hurt enemies or anything. The spin works if Reading has a cape, but as I stated earlier I'm not using the Cape or Fire Flower in the game, and plus that leaves the problem of the small/big status thing.

I tried searching the ROM map for a workaround to these problems, but didn't seem to find anything. Does anyone know how to permanently enable a working cape spin for both "small" and "super" Mario? Thanks.
I wrote the lyrics for a theme song I'm using for the game, entitled "Forward". As I mentioned earlier, for obvious reasons I can't actually use the vocals, but I think instrument 4 may come close, and I'll only create one verse for a reasonable file size. I'm not sure what kind of music I'll set them to at the moment. Once you've read the lyrics, what kind of tune do you feel would suit them?

BTW, any help on the things I mentioned in my previous two posts? :P

Forward

[1st Verse]

I'm on a quest now
I'm saving my world
I'm finding those keys
I'm moving forward

I'm gonna save my friends
Once I find those keys
And I'm not alone
Three agents assist me

I may not agree with them
We debate frequently
Would I believe what they think
About Dimension B

But that doesn't matter
'Cause I'm saving my world
And one step at a time
I'm moving forward

[Chorus]

Forward
Forward
Forward
Forward

I'm moving forward
My steps are small
But I have what it takes
I give it my all

Forward
Forward
Forward
Forward

I'm moving forward
My steps are small
But that's just how it works
To save it all

(keyboard solo)

[2nd verse]

I'm far from home
I've been forced away
And that sepatation has
A price to pay

My work is not near me
I can't work at all
My projects are not here
They've come to a stall

I need a new mindset
This one won't do
I need a new mindset
To follow through

These projects don't rule me
I'm the master of myself
And right now I choose to
Stick them on the shelf

[Chorus]

Forward
Forward
Forward
Forward

I'm moving forward
My steps are small
But I have what it takes
I give it my all

Forward
Forward
Forward
Forward

I'm moving forward
My steps are small
But that's just how it works
To save it all

(drum solo)

[3rd Verse]

I must change myself
To go on and on
I'm moving forward
I'm moving on

There's a higher authority
I must submit to
And when that door's opened
And when we enter that room

I have to trust these agents
Trust them with my life
Even though I know what they've done
I'll need them for the fight

I must change myself
As I cross this world
And slowly but surely
I'm moving forward

[Chorus]

Forward
Forward
Forward
Forward

I'm moving forward
My steps are small
But I have what it takes
I give it my all

Forward
Forward
Forward
Forward

I'm moving forward
My steps are small
But that's just how it works
To save it all

(guitar solo)

[4th Verse]

It's been a journey of change
For me and my friends
And when we're safe
The journey meets its end

I've learned a lot on this venture
There's memories to save
Like when I found my first key
Like when I cried in that cave

And now we're waiting
At that station
I recall how I love and trust
The Master of Situations

I'm on the right track
I follow the right word
And one step at a time
I'm moving forward

[Chorus]

Forward
Forward
Forward
Forward

I'm moving forward
My steps are small
But I have what it takes
I give it my all

Forward
Forward
Forward
Forward

I'm moving forward
My steps are small
But that's just how it works
To save it all

(medley of solos with a heavy instrumental finish)
Wow reading, that's awesome. I'll be looking forward to this hack.
in order for this hack to be a success, you must set those lyrics to bulgarian wedding music.

hear me out

But seriously even tho this is a furry hack and you look suspiciously like tails, this looks really well-polished. Good luck with it man.

By the way, are you bringing Black Plague back? I loved that guy. Or Earthquake Joe

I'm not "furry", by any definition, in any way, shape or form. I just happen to like Tails. I get the feeling you were joking, but just in case you weren't. >_>

Nope. Sorry. I'm glad people liked my original characters though.

This isn't important to the hack, but RatSI is actually set before the SMI series in chronological terms-it happens during the course of The Hidden Scepter, and tHS takes place before Super Mario Infinity, so during the course of RatSI, Black Plague was still trapped in the Cursed Gem guarding the time bomb. RatSI and tHS are a completely seperate plot from the SMI series.

Here's a new screenshot to keep you all happy:

This may look familiar to those of you who've played Kirby and the Amazing Mirror. As I mentioned earlier, like in that game, the object of RatSI is not to clear levels, but to find the Dimension Keys. The Area Map can benefit your search by pointing out the locations of the levels in the Area and where they lead. There are nine Areas in the game, five of which contain a Dimension Key. The other four are...secret. :P

I'm also using S.N.N.'s goal tracker in place of the small bonus star counter. The number of goals you have will figure into gameplay over the course of the game, so it'll be helpful to know how many you have without having to go back to the title screen.

Okay, no offense, I kinda wasn't, but that's just because I'm from Somethingawful and with the stuff with guys like djyinn flyssa and drgamez, well, it kinda makes me think that if someone really likes a video game character, they, um, really like that character. sorry buddy. < _ >

It's fine. Just a misunderstanding.

For the music, I'd say something similar to this: http://www.ocremix.org/remix/OCR01435/

That style definitely sounds like it'll suit the lyrics. Of course, I can't create a true "rock" song in SMW, but I'll try to come close. ;)
Reading, I have a question. Can you give me the tune to the song and stuff? I am a great singer and I would be honored to sing your song for you.... XD
Just back here to browse a bit.
