Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS

Personally I'm worried about the old characters. We've hit 24 characters already, which is slightly under the amount that Melee had. Brawl had 36, and I'm nearly certain that they've already confirmed that there will be less characters than Brawl. If so, they still haven't included all of the classic 64 characters, and they're missing a couple of the classic Melee characters.

Major Characters Missing So Far
Captain Falcon
Ness
Yoshi
Jigglypuff
Sheik
Ice Climbers

Hopefully these characters show up, I'm fond of using them as secondaries (or mains, Ice Climbers in Melee).

Anyway, I updated the op to include full links to all known levels, and links for the characters. Some minor character stats are included on the bottom.

Zelda's back so Sheik is more or less confirmed.

All I want are Ness and Falco back.

Captain Falcon, Ness, Yoshi and Jigglypuff were all in the original smash bros so they're confirmed back, and as MVS said Sheik is more or less back as well. I'd be a bit surprised if the chose to leave out the Ice Climbers so I think you shouldn't be worrying too much.

I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't throw in another couple of Brawl characters, and probably another newbie.

Yeah, Sheik is probably going to be in there because of Zelda, though in Melee Sheik was announced before Zelda, and of course no one knew about Zelda until she was announced later. The 64 characters are yes, most likely going to make it in. And yeah, ICs. Still though, adding all of those characters will make the list an even 30, making me wonder whether they will go past that, though I'm guessing something like 32.

I'm personally wondering about characters like Falco and Ganondorf. According to what Sakurai said, they're moving away from the clones for this release, putting these characters in limbo (including Lucas, Wolf) All the clones in Brawl began shifting away from their originals, but the only clone we've gotten so far is Toon Link, who has no recognizable changes from last game at the moment. Luigi has pretty much established himself as a unique character. I'm not seeing the clones from Melee making their way back to the game (Pichu? Dr. Mario?) obviously. I personally would like to see Falco come back, I'm not worried about the rest.

I hope G&W makes it back as well, he's been my main since Brawl came out. I wouldn't mind seeing Wario, Ike, or MK make it back, they were very interesting characters. Snake would be cool but I can understand him not getting back in.
It would really be cool to see Pokemon Trainer return though considering he's kind of three characters I doubt he will. I thought it was a pretty cool concept of being able to switch between three different Pokemon and not only that they were fun to try and master.

With that being said it would be kind of strange not to include at least the originals from the very first game. I honestly want all the m major characters to come back but if they have to cut some in order to make room for some new characters I'd at least say bring back the characters that started the series off. (Even Jigglypuff despite me never using her.)

Wait where was it said that there would be less characters than in Brawl?
Nowhere, they did say the roster might not be be much bigger than Brawl's though.
Your layout has been removed.
"Not much bigger" but still bigger. So assuming that "not much" is like, 5. Because if we add 5 to 34 (Brawl's Roster, minus Sheik and Zero Suit since they don't appear on the character select) its 40 (39 plus one for "random"), and that number is divisible by 8, making it look nice and clean on the character select. Though that might just be wishful thinking.

With the characters Egadd listed plus, say, 5 for potential Brawl vets, thats 35. So that leaves a potential 4 Newcomers. Give or take but I think that is pretty good.
I want Professor E. Gadd, because why not?

Are we getting combo attacks? Is Smash Bros going the way of a more strategic fighter?

RIP infinite kick

those were annoying anyways (kirby's and pikachu's were kawaii though)

By "Combo attack", I'm pretty sure they mean the spam-A moves. In other words, they're removing the moves that hit infinitely if you keep spamming A. Which is just a shame, because you can set up some nice hits with the characters that have them.

Sounds great to me. While some infinites were cool, some (G&W) had horrendous ending lag that opened you up for serious punishing. Some characters (Ike) already had this though, but at least it's now for the full cast.

In answer to MVS, Smash has always had combos, they've just been covered up in the past, and most times it was up to the player to decide which moves to use. There were numerous ways to cancel lag in order to string together attacks.
A few updates:

Waluigi returns as an Assist Trophy.

Dedenne is a new Pokemon that appears from the Pokeball. It's funny how some people on Miiverse think he's playable.

I don't think, he'll be playable. I mean Waluigi hasn't got an own game or was in a game where he is an important character.

Yeah, it wasn't a big suprise that he's an Assist Trophy.

Dang, I wanted to play as Waluigi. #smw{T_T}

He was the final boss of Mario Party 3 IIRC, so he's had one semi-major role.

Yes to both points.
Any other Gen-6 Pokémon confirmed?
I really need a layout. :<
