Windows 7. Despite the fact I can tweak Windows 8 to an extent that it looks like Windows 7, I still find Windows 7 to be more customizable. The only thing Windows 8 improves for me is a slight speed increase.

Also I think this may be better in the computing forum of the site.
Windows 8 has a lot of changes. As far as I know, they wanted to create an OS suited for both, Computers and Tablets. In the end though, it seems to not fit either.

I highly prefer 7 to 8. You can't even properly close non-dektop apps on W8.
There's also the fact, that usualy every second OS from Windows sucks. So I suggest either sticking with 7 or waiting for 9

Honestly, it's personally preference. Lots of people have been saying that it's terrible and not worth buying, but I really disagree with that. It's a new experience. You should try it out at a Microsoft store first, and see if you like it. Especially try it with a touch screen.

Personally, I find it to be equally as good, if not better, than Windows 7. I've had my Windows 8 for over a month so far, and it's been faring well.

Windows 8 search feature is definitely good if you're looking to easily open an application that is not in your task bar.

I don't know what kind of thing you're doing, but alt-f4 closes non desktop apps 100% of the time for me.

Windows 8 definitely has a more sleek and clean feel to it than 7 does, however 7 does have the classic navigation that we've all been used to.

Chances are, when Windows 9 comes out, it'll still have tiles.

Try it out for yourself, see what you like.
Don't get Windows 8. It's unstable and broken as fuck. Not to mention the GUI is shit.

Once again, that is the computer's fault, not the OS'. Windows 8 is not broken one bit on my computer. The GUI is not 'shit'. It's personal preference. Some people actually like the GUI.
Not sure what you mean with "unstable and broken" Xinn considering I find it slightly faster than Windows 7. I agree with the new GUI but I still have my ways of removing it.

What's your opinion on Windows 8 for users without a touch screen? Most people would rather upgrade their OS than buy a whole new monitor/laptop.

Still good, just that most things in the UI are a little gigantic.

I don't have a touch screen on my Windows 8. I tried Windows 8 on my friend's computer with a touch screen. Navigation is pretty much the same. The only thing different is you can tap things instead of using your mouse, and scroll through the home with your finger and all that jazz.

It still works fine without a touch screen.

If you're an Osu! player, getting a touch screen might be great for you.
Consider that Windows 7 is currently in a position very similar to Windows XP. It is quickly becoming a standard in the computing world. Compatibility goals for any type of software focuses on W7 rather than W8. W7 is customizable, relatively fast, modern, and future-proofed to a reasonable extent.

You can argue about whether to get 7 or 8 (8 is a joke IMO), but 7 is cheaper and a guaranteed good choice.
I've been using 8 for about 4months now, gotta say after modifying it to the way i like it, i really prefer it. its nicer to look at imo, the UI is incredibly shit at first but you get used to it (or do what I did and mod it)

Heres a pic of my desktop and start menu:

DESKTOP PICTURE WINDOWS 8

Everything is there, you know. I organised the start screen to different catogories for ease, and deleted the crappy stock microsoft apps.

People who say 8 is a joke usually have never used it outside of a demo. You really have to expierence it for the full effect.

EDIT:
Yes my start menu only takes up a small amount of the screen, wasnt too fussed on it taking the whole screen up.
i've been using windows 7 since 2011 and i gotta say, it's better than windows 8. a teacher of mine in school had windows 8 and it was very slow. my windows 7 computer is very fast and does look worth it and lasts very long.

That is absolutely true.

Also, I see you have some Start8 shenanigans on there. I was thinking about pirating it, but idunno. I'm really used to the start screen.

I have used the trial, all 30 days.

Again, this is due to the computer.

My aunt's computers, which all run Windows 7 are slow as shit, mainly because they just aren't good computers.

Say you take the same kind of computer, a bad one, plop windows 8 on it, and it'll do just as bad. Take a good computer that runs windows 8 well, plop windows 7 on it, and it'll be just as fast as what it was before when it had windows 8 on it.

Either that or your teacher was just doing something wrong.

uhm Pirate it, give it a go. you can do alot of customisations with it. If you like it pay for it (or don't up to you, personally I wouldnt pay for a start button...)
All I do is use "Ex7forw8" and just copy explorer.exe and explorer.exe.mui from Windows 7. Problem solved and no extra memory usage.

I did and I patched it, but it still wouldn't work because the trial was done.

I myself use Windows 8, but I almost never have to visit the Start menu since I have IObit's Start Menu 8 and I have set it to boot at desktop. (It's not possible from settings but it's an useful trick that can be done) This means I almost never visit the 8 Start Menu and I only use the old one and desktop all the time.

If you do that, Windows 8 is better because it boots a lot faster than 7.
