YOLOshi's Island (back from the dead)

Hack

This is a Yoshi's Island Kaizo hack I started, inspired by Kaizo Island, FrankyC253's levels, and Loop2. It's possible that I might not feel like doing too much with SMW hacking after MMD2, so if not, this is what I'll be doing. I do not have any speculation on how long this hack will be.
I keep forgetting who helped me to come up with the title on the IRC, but they shall be credited.
Unlike Yoshi Must Die, this will be multiple levels and will have collectible items and secret levels.

In case you forgot what the hack is called. Notice that I removed the SMW2 text.

The plot.

Exactly what it says on the tin.

Riding on a Chomp rock over a field of spikes while outrunning a Shark Chomp while avoiding yellow Bullet Bills. This is toward the beginning of 1-1.

There is a door right behind the Chomp rock, and yes, you have to go through it, and no, you can't move the rock out of the way.

You could flutter to the other side, bypassing the boulder but if you do, then you won't be able to get the hidden flower. Also, something is inside that pipe. I will need to make that 2 blocks wide because I discovered that Yoshi can still slurp up that Shy Guy without pounding that stake all the way down.

Aw crap, did I forget to make that possible?
Get you where you wanna go if you know what I mean.
Got a ride that's smoother than a limousine.
Can you handle the curves, can you run all the lights?
If you can baby boy then we can go all night
Goes from 0 to 60 in 3.5 baby you got the keys.
Now

If you turn into a car right now, you're screwed.
And peeking into the future a little bit:

1-E. It forces you to get 6 keys at the beginning, so if you lay any eggs, you're screwed because one of the keys will be replaced by the egg, and you need all 6 keys to win. I might need to test it further to confirm that for sure. The secret levels will probably be more difficult than the already Kaizo-difficult main game.
I also wanna change the BG.

I Love the name Shut Up And Drive. Will this hack be as hard and as creative as Mario Must Die? I Can see this hack being the hardest Yoshi's Island hack of this year.
I dunno. It probably is considerably more difficult if you want to collect everything and access the secret levels. I might try to focus on puzzles that don't depend on specific egg filtering unless maybe I can do something about bonus items.
I had thought about a shell jumping level later on, inspired by Don't Forget the Shells.

Wait, so an egg when you have 6 keys will replace one of the keys? That's interesting. I thought the game would prioritize the keys and simply discard the egg immediately.

I guess one of my own ideas for an extra level, where due to 6 keys at the start you get no eggs until you find a locked door to unlock (then you have to find another 5 locks that are only reachable with at least one egg, and finally return to an items-disabled room near the start that requires 6 eggs to reach the goal), wouldn't actually be implementable without an ASM edit...

All the screenshots look pretty good! I'd like to see what things you could do with that 6 keys gimmick (I have never seen anyone do something like that before). I also like the name "Shut Up and Drive", because it looks fitting with that level.

All in all, great job! Can't wait to see more from this!

It's always interesting to see what you can come up with when making kaizo levels and being as mean as possible to the player ^^
Your ideas so far seem pretty good and even though I'm not a huge fan of kaizo hacks, I'm looking forward to seeing what else you will have.
Especially the idea with the 6 keys is clever, I remember a similar stage in Kamek's Revenge, but that one only used 5 keys.

Actually, keys are never prioritized, the game just simply moves them to the back as far as possible, so everything is fine as long as you have no more than 5 keys. But in case you carry 6 items, and you get another one, the first item is always discarded in order to make room for the new item.
Egg-Simulator.exe
Someone knowing ASM could help or maybe I could do something if I had the location of the comparison for discarding an item in case Yoshi has 6.
NEW! SMW2 Yoshi's Island is done!

That's where I got the idea from. And I think I saw someone break it somehow because IIRC there were keys but no locked doors.

I always thought YOLO was stupid, but for some reason the way it's used in this hack makes me laugh.
Well, A YI Kaizo hack always did sound interesting, but I never got around to patching one and playing it. :/ WHen this is finished (is it?) I'll probably play it. :U
And we're back.

You must leave that sand block intact. That is a Shy Guy pipe. One minor road block I encountered: I don't want the player to have any eggs at this point so they have to flutter downward repeatedly until the first Shy Guy comes out, and then eat the other one that comes out. So I might have to put an egg filtering puzzle before this point. I wanted this to be the respawn point.

Glitch the door inside the blocks and follow it. Could make for an interesting puzzle.
I will eventually turn the concrete blocks into actual ground.
As for overall hack length, I dunno. Maybe as many levels as I can think of ideas for, and probably at least one world long.

The new levels look awesome. If you're going to make the hack one world long, try making the levels as long as MMD.
^
That's actually not too hard to do with Yoshi's Island. My first ever YI custom level, Shark Tale, didn't feel too long when creating it (it only had 1 middle ring) but when I played through it 100%, it took about 6 minutes.
Well, I don't seem to be having as much fun with this particular hack as I thought I would ATM.

Nice screens. That reminds me I should resume on working on Kaizo Island soon.

Speaking of Kaizo Island, I am just now kinda thinking about taking out the collectibles and just focusing on the platforming itself, which means the "6 keys level" will have to be one of the regular levels. Makes sense since most SMW Kaizo levels don't use Dragon Coins. Some parts may have to be modified tho.

Most of the time I add in collectable after the level is already complete, for those who like seeing me get 100%. I rarely base the level around them. I'm working on a new YI level currently and I've not been focusing on any collectables.
The level looks cool! I like how you used the Chomp Rock to make another rock ride it, pretty creative, and also the Yellow Bullet Bill part (I have to agree, it indeed looks fun :P). I have no issues to point out, so I am looking forward to watching the whole second level!

That's surprising, considering I'm still relatively new to YI hacking.
There were some minor cutoffs that I didn't really think about until later, but I don't think they're too noticeable.
A couple screens from 1-2:

Decided to remake the beginning. You WILL need that watermelon somehow. Touch either of the morph bubbles right now and you're screwed.

I found a way to take non-submarine Yoshi underwater. This screen was actually from my other YI hack (that I'm not sure I will finish) but I figured this could be used for a puzzle.

A sneak peek of 1-3. Think you can guess what it's about?
That key level I showed earlier will be 1-5 instead, since I decided not to use collectibles and it would have been 1-E.

All of Yoshi's morphs can go underwater, actually, as far as I know (though the train morph would be rather useless since I don't believe train tracks and transparent water can use the same tileset). It was done with the car morph and mole tank morph in Kamek's Revenge.

...though admittedly I've never tested the super baby form, if that counts as a morph.

I've never tried it either but I think it would probably work. I've been able to do it with regular Yoshi too.
