With Kamek's Island finished, it's time to move on to another project. Super Mario Bros. 5 Reborn, while it may be a decent hack, no longer meets my personal quality standards. Unlike the radical changes made from Super Mario Starlight Remix to Mario & Luigi: Starlight Island Adventure, Kola Kingdom Quest will more closely resemble the hack it's based on. It will use many of the same graphics and music tracks, have the same world themes in the same order, and have the same story.

So far, I have the first 3 levels of Tiki Island finished.

TIKI ISLAND 1 - WELCOME TO PARADISE

The beginning of the level. It doesn't take long to get your first power-up.

Going for a Yoshi Coin, which will soon be reskinned into a Star Coin.

The first submap. The Overworld will be COMPLETELY redesigned since the original is incredibly blocky.

TIKI ISLAND 2 - REX RESORT

The first Cheep-Cheep of the game isn't hard to pass.

It wouldn't be Rex Resort without Rexes.

Classic Fireball has been implemented in this hack, just as it was in the original.

TIKI ISLAND 3 - THE TIDE IS HIGH

Yep, it's a tide level.

Just a bonus room.

This level is largely inspired by Yoshi's Island 4 from the original SMW.

Another bonus area in the clouds. I've wanted to have a double rainbow BG for a long time. I've finally made one that looks acceptable.

The screenshots are good, the hack "revamp" is long distance graphics are perfect! Keep working!

Amazing layout by JackTheSpades
Damn GammaV! This looks so beautiful I like the hack's style!

Another full release of your hack, just how awesome is that!

Keep it up!
SMB5v3, I don't mind another play through of the game, I kinda hope all the kinks you find get ironed out. Maybe some extra content as well, who knows.

Just have fun while doing it, okay?

I wonder what a HFD opcode would do in ASM...
Thanks again, guys.

Well, I finished up another level just prior to posting this.

YELLOW SWITCH ZONE

Hmm...This doesn't look much like a Switch Palace.
Unlike the traditional Switch Palace, Switch Zones play out pretty much like normal levels, with the only real differences being that you end them by pressing the Switch and there are no Star Coins.

This level introduces Venus Firetraps, but they're fairly easy to avoid and only spit one fireball. Also, unlike the original SMB5R, Kola Kingdom Quest has REAL HDMA gradients in the background.

Here's the Switch. I wanted to have the base be silver, but STEAR wouldn't let me change the palette of the base on the flat switch sprite.

That night Bg looks pretty cool! And the Switch palace room looks awesome, like finding a treasure!

Like the switch zone level in general.

Keep going on!
For changing the switch palette, try this:

Code
org $02CDAE
	JSR $B627
	NOP

org $02B627
	BCS $04
	ORA $02
	BRA $02
	ORA #$02
	RTS

That's assuming you mean the switch when it's pressed, of course; the object can be edited in the Map16 editor. The #$02 in the second-to-last line can be changed to whatever palette you want (the "ccc" bits of YXPPCCCT format), and the $02B627 is just any address in bank 02 with at least 9 bytes of freespace.
Thanks for that code, imamelia. It worked perfectly.

It's time to double post. Yes, this hack is still alive. A glitch on the Overworld caused by one of LM's ASM hacks nearly killed it. Another reason progress has been slow is that I'm currently in the process of moving house. Anyway, here are some screenshots.

TIKI ISLAND 5 - Tropical Trouble

This level introduces Yoshi, whose graphics will eventually be changed. Unlike in the original SMB5R, Yoshi doesn't carry over from level to level.

This is also the first athletic level of the game, and it introduces the Turn Block Bridges first seen in Yoshi's Island 3.

PREVIEW: TIKI ISLAND 5 - Sunset Stroll

I just started this level, which will be the last level before the World 1 castle.

I really like the way this Hack turns out... The only thing I would personally think of to be changed is the Interface (the status bar), as it looks like a SMW-mod taking care of an own style very much.

One question: Is the music staying the same as in the original? Because the final world has really good music...
I'm not asking for the tracks themselves, in case you were going to tell me that

Edit: Also all the bullet shooters in the original are one block off, as shown in this late level.

Usually inactive/procrastinating on a hack idea.
Thankfully, we were only without internet service for one day. Most of that day was spent moving, but I still got work done on this hack. Tiki Island 5 is now finished, so here are some screenshots.

Just going for a Star Coin.

Those treasure chests are just decoration.

This level introduces Chargin' Chuck.

Once again i'll be keeping a close eye on the hacks you make in order to get some inspiration out of it. anyway this is really good so far i look forward to see much more progress of this in the future.
No, this isn't dead yet. I've just been taking a break from it for a while. Anyway. I've finally finished World 1 and started on World 2.

Here's the castle. The foreground is the same one I used in Starlight Island Adventure, but the background is new.

Thwomps are probably the toughest enemies in this castle.

The second room features the vertical/horizontal moving checkered platforms in combination with the Koopas and Thwomps from the first room. Yellow ! Blocks make this level a bit easier.

First glimpse of the main map.

A revamp of the intro screen with a custom background

Here's the main map with all paths revealed. Worlds 2, 4, and 5 will be on this map, while Worlds 1, 3, 6, 7, 8, and 9 will be on the submaps.

O shitless, looks the map great man, much much better than in previous SMB5 Reborn.

Finish the thing! And castle looks nice as always. Will there be a boss?
When i saw the entire main map i was speechless at how great it looks. keep it Gamma V you're doing great.
Thanks for all the feedback so far. I finally got back to work on this after doing more touch-up to Kamek's Island and just goofing off while listening to my growing Sonic ReMix collection. Anyway, the first level of World 2 is finally done.

Mushroom Plains 1 - Monty Mole's Garden

Just like its predecessor in SMB5R, this is the level that introduces Monty Moles.

There are also some Koopas here.

An underground section. Here, Gaddly explains that, in order to reach a Switch Zone, you need to have cleared the one before it, ie, you need to have cleared the Yellow Switch Zone to access the Green Switch Zone, Green to access Red, and Red to access Blue.

Everything looks cool! No complain. Love the Bg rearrangement in the level, and like the gfx combo in the cave part.

Keep up and finish this of!
Looks like a Hack to chill out a bit (just like always)... :)
