Mario & Luigi: Kola Kingdom Quest - A revamp of Super Mario Bros. 5 Reborn - Beta now available for testing!

Standard

Thanks, Wuthering.

I've now started on World 3. When I'm done with this World, I'll likely be releasing a demo of the hack.

Dry Ruins 1 - Move Faster, Pokey!

No Pokeys yet, but they ARE here.

Kill all the Koopas in this room to make a Star Coin appear. Consider it a bit of a shout-out to Yoshi's Island, where you sometimes had to kill all the enemies in a room to make a Flower appear.

THERE'S a Pokey.

Unique level, and I don't know why I am a fan of your desert levels...

Looks good so far!
Hey, Gamma V? I think your hack needs fortresses with Boom Boom as a mini-boss in world 3. That's my SMB3 style request
@xImseiken3: Thanks again for your compliments, man.

@kolaboy87: This isn't necessarily an SMB3-style hack. Yes, there may be shout-outs to SMB3, like the Hammer Bros. battle, but that doesn't mean the hack is entirely SMB3-style. That's not to say I couldn't put a fortress with a Boom-Boom SOMEWHERE, but given that I already have the World 3 map plotted out and it includes no fortresses, it won't be happening yet.

Anyway, with the exception of a sublevel for a Star Coin, I've finished up Dry Ruins 2.

DRY RUINS 2 - DINO-RHINO DUNES

Yep, it's a level full of Dino-Rhinos.

Where there are Dino-Rhinos, there are also Dino-Torches.

It's probably a good idea to take out the Dino-Rhinos here before going for the Star Coin.

This is looking pretty amazing. I recently fell in love with M&L: Starlight Island and consider it one of the best hacks I've played in a long time. As a dedicated career artist, the hard work put into this isn't lost on me and this one is very much looking to be a masterpiece.

With that said, could we look forward to revamps of your other projects, especially Starlight Island in the future?

If you're referring to Super Mario Starlight Remix, then M&L: Starlight Island Adventure IS that revamp. Mecha-Bowser's Revenge IS another possible revamp, considering that ended up getting canceled, but I'd have to learn a lot of ASM before doing so. The reason that was canceled is because I didn't have the bosses I wanted, couldn't count on requests, and didn't know the ASM required to make them myself.

Hmm, you could have made Mecha-Bowser's Revenge a team hack if you wanted to. (Implying if that would have averted its cancelation, alternatively from just making requests to random coders).

BTW, I sure like the new screenshots and your latest video with its execution of gimmicks.

Projects I support:

Well, I finished up the first of the three secret levels accessed from Dry Ruins 1.

RUINS SECRET 1 - CATACOMB CAVERN

This part of the desert ruins has sunken underground. It's full of Dry Bones and spiders.

You can backtrack a bit to get this Star Coin, or you can bounce off one of the enemies.

For this Star Coin, you have to bounce off the Suu. Yes, there may be secrets that require the player to bounce off enemies, but this technique will never be required to complete a level.

The dedication you put into this seems pretty amazing. I can't really see any flaws here. I like your level design ideas especially the fact that you are taking care of how the levels should reasonable. Well done.
Thanks, Everest.

Well, here's another finished level for you guys.

RED SWITCH ZONE

Lava-filled buried ruins in the desert? Why not?

That Buzzy shell will eventually reveal a vine that leads to some extra coins.

The coins indicate sweet spots where you won't get burned by Podoboos.

Liked it so far! Nice music choice for an area like that, it fits well in my opinion. It's a great level in general, level design is well done and aesthetics as well.

Looking foward for more progress.
Looking good! No complaints. Also, I liked Starlight Island Adventure, so I'll definately give this one a go, as well.
My layout has removed you.
Thanks again, Face.

Well, I have just 3 more levels to complete before finishing up World 3 and releasing a demo. I just finished up Ruins Secret 2 today.

RUINS SECRET 2 - AL-KOOPA TRAINING CAMP

Roy's Explosion-Sensitive Blocks patch has been applied, and it's put to use in this level.

You can get those coins by having a Bob-Omb explode on the top of that block formation.

There are quite a few Albatosses in this level, and many of them drop Bob-Ombs.

I like what I'm seeing, should be a new experience to go through this compared to the original. I do like what you did with the backgrounds, adding your own touches and details.

Suggestions:
- You should redraw the Suu (the spider) as it doesn't look quite good as the rest the sprites in game.
- In the ruins secret 2, I think you should darken the passable brick blocks a bit more, they don't look that different from the solid ones.
- Fireball bar could use a graphical lift too.
- Maybe you could minimize the status bar a bit, rearranging things since you are rid of the star points. (Item box could use different graphics)

Personal Suggestion:
- Maybe apply the patch that saves Dragon coins (star coins in this case) to SRAM. I usually go for all the Yoshi coins in your hacks, as it adds a bit more of a challenge.

All in all, everything is looking fine, can't wait for more updates. Keep the good work up!
I wonder what a HFD opcode would do in ASM...
@TLMB:

I don't know. The Suu looks alright to me, as does the Firebar. Also, it's kinda difficult to darken the passable bricks too much since they share their palette with the solid ones. If you're talking about the blocks that can be destroyed with Bob-Omb explosions, I could clarify Gaddly's message to say that the smallest square blocks can be destroyed.

As for editing the Status Bar, I'm not sure if I will or not. I might try using the patch that saves Star Coins to SRAM though. Is that SRAM Expand?

The background graphics look pretty nice and yeah the sun seems fine for me. The sprites present in this level seem to be structured quite well as I can tell by the text and screenshots. Good job here!
This all looks really good so far. I especially like that you're using the Mario graphics from Super Mario Land 2. What will Luigi's sprite look like? Will it be a palette swap of Mario or will it resemble Luigi's typical look? I'm curious because there's no Luigi sprite in Super Mario Land 2.

Unless Construct101 makes a Luigi sprite in the same style as his SML2-style Mario, Luigi will just be a palette swap.

Anyway, I finally got back to work on this yesterday and finished another level despite being sick with some sort of respiratory infection.

DRY RUINS 3 - BIG BOO'S PYRAMID

It's awfully dark in here. Also, I wonder how I'll get that Yoshi Coin.

It's not shown for a few screenshots, but there's a P-Switch gimmick in this level. The block marked with a P will activate the P-Switch for half of its normal time. This will make certain blocks appear or disappear and be either solid or passable. It'll also turn the lights on thanks to palette animation.

That Big Boo may need to get out of my way.

Once I turn the lights on, there'll be a fork in the road. Only one way is the right way out, but this may not even be the right room.

Remember where that Big Boo was in the way? If you get him out of the way, you can sprout this vine and get up here. That Yoshi Coin is actually P-Switch-sensitive, and it will only appear and be collectible when the switch is active. I coded it myself, but had a little trouble getting it to work. Once I did, I submitted it to the Blocks section.

Once you find your way through the more labyrinthine part of the pyramid, you come to this room, which auto-scrolls. You have to hit the P Blocks as soon as you see them or you might fall to your death. This room isn't too terribly long, and it leads to the Big Boo Boss. Yep, this level is a sort of Ghost House/Fortress hybrid.

Here's a video showing the first part of the level. Here, you can see the gimmick in action.

D-D-DOUBLE POST!

I finally got back to work on this hack and finished the penultimate level of Dry Ruins. A demo will be released after the third castle is finished.

DRY RUINS 4 - EENIE MEENIE MINEY MOAI

As the name implies, this level revolves around the Moai-based enemies from Super Mario Land.

Green Switch Blocks now give Yoshi instead of Cape Feathers. Red Switch Blocks give Fire Flowers, and, once they're activated, Blue Switch Blocks will give Cape Feathers.

Batadons might be the least threatening enemies in this level.

Whoa!

This is another "Destroy them all!" bonus room, but you need Yoshi to actually take out the Tokotokos in the holes into the walls. If you don't have Yoshi, there are some coins to collect.

Both levels look great to play them! Design seems to be good in it's own way.

Good Idea for that bonus room btw!

I am looking forward for more stuff from this!
