Mario & Luigi: Kola Kingdom Quest - A revamp of Super Mario Bros. 5 Reborn - Beta now available for testing!

Standard

Thanks, Re1Mu. You'll get to see a level right now.

VERDANT FOREST 6 - LAKE LAZULI

Here's the game's first pure water level. As such, it introduces your typical water level enemies.

Try not to make too much noise when going for this Star Coin.

More underwater Jumpin' Piranha Plants. They jump in BOTH directions. Perhaps later in the game, red variants will show up.

Looks like I woke up a hungry fish.

Another Destroy Them All room, but you'll need a Fire Flower for this one.

Looks like I have to double post again...

I got a couple more levels done today, which leaves only 3 more levels of Verdant Forest.

BLUE SWITCH ZONE

Watch out! The acorns in the trees fall.

These Blue Spinies move 50% faster than their red cousins.

Lakitus under the bridge. You can't stomp on them, so just watch out for the Spinies they toss.

The room with the Blue Switch is underwater, and there are a couple Cheep-Cheeps to avoid (or blast with fireballs).

FOREST FORTRESS - THUNDER LAKITU'S FORTRESS

If you see a little hole in the ceiling, you better move quickly. Lightning bolts will start falling and setting the ground on fire.

Green Spinies move as fast as the blue ones, but they're smart enough not to walk off the edge of a ledge.

Can you get past THIS firewall?

Thunder Lakitu himself...He drops lightning bolts that create a pair of fast-moving sparks on the ground. He can only be hurt when he swoops down, but when he does, the ground shakes. This makes him a pretty tough boss.

Please note that, after the screens were taken, I increased the time limit for the level by 100, so the remaining times displayed may not be what a typical player experiences.

Everything looks great!

Thanks, Mors.

I'm getting ever closer to finishing World 4. Just 2 more levels to go, one of which is a Bonus Challenge level.

VERDANT FOREST 7 - TREETOP TREK

Para-Spiny. This guy is a tweak of the Eerie Disassembly, so he will either fly straight or in a wavy pattern. Later, there are Blue Para-Spinies that are twice as fast.

Scale Platforms. Staying on the one near the Star Coin long enough will allow you to collect it.

I should also mention that that foliage at the bottom of the screen is actually a Layer 3 image. I can finally put those into my hack with ease thanks to the features of the new Lunar Magic.

Hmmm, I do feel that the boss goes on a little too long. Decrease the hits it takes a little.

The second level doesn't seem to explore the flying sspinies gimmick enough, but it's decent otherwise.
The level looks pretty good, I never thought that the small logs with ropes were scaling platforms (it's the disassembly, right?).

Also, I have the same opinion of MercuryPenny about the boss, maybe decreasing a little the hits would be better.
@LX5: Those are indeed made from Ice Man's disassembly.

@MP and LX: The coding on that boss is messy and not very well-commented. I did try reducing HP, but couldn't find the value I needed to edit in the .asm file.

The fortress is fairly flat, and then the scrolling part is pretty boring I advise you to accelerate it.
the graphics are really well done ^^

--
For the other level is quite annoying because long enough
Then there are not many sprites, is an easy hack?

In any case good luck for the future
Layout by Koopster
The reason that fortress is so "flat" is because of the lightning launchers. They need at least 5 tiles under them to avoid cutoff with the flames. Still, I have made whatever edits I could. As for Treetop Trek, there is the threat of some platforms falling, sending you into a bottomless abyss.

Well, I don't have any new levels to show off this time, but I have made some pretty big changes that I suppose I should mention.

First off, all the new Layer 3 possibilities afforded by the new Lunar Magic have prompted me to switch to a sprite Status Bar. I ended up choosing WhiteYoshiEgg's DKC-styled variety.

This is what the end result looks like.

Great as this Status Bar looks in the hack, I did encounter a couple caveats to using it. First off, I can't use any Mode 7 bosses, so Ludwig and Morton had to be replaced.

Ludwig is pretty simple. He walks back and forth while spitting Bowser Statue fireballs and gets a little faster with each hit. He's an Ultimate n00b Boss variant, which initially caused a lot of headache because of a conflict with the Status Bar patch that caused the game to crash when he was killed. After fussing about it all day and stressing myself out trying to code a new Ludwig with similar behaviors, I ended up finding the cause of the problem with the help of imamelia. All I had to do was comment out 3 lines of code that called some routines involving the old Status Bar, which are related to n00b Boss options that I didn't utilize.

Morton is a reskin of Dr. Mahatma's BossKoopa sprite. You can beat him by stomping on his head 3 times, shooting him with 5 fireballs, or knocking him out of the arena (He gets knocked back a bit when hit).

The other problem with the DKC Sprite Status Bar is that the reserve item box glitches up a bit when there's a message box on screen.

I worked around the displayed instances by disabling the Status Bar in the rooms with the Switches, but I don't think it would be as nice to do that in every level where a Message Box is bound to show up.

To fix the message box issue you can patch this:

Code
header : lorom

org $05B1CE
BRA $01
org $05B199
BRA $01

But it has a little downside, you won't have the exclamation block sprites in the switch palace messages.
@LX5, it didn't fix the bug, but I'll keep it since I didn't want the ! Block sprites in the messages anyway.

Anyway, I've been doing more work with the cosmetic aspects of the hack. The OW now has a new border.

Also, World 4 is now done. Here are the last couple levels.

BONUS BATTLE #2 - VS CHUCK TWINS

This was originally going to be a coin hunt, but I failed at creating a sprite that spawned a treasure chest after the player collected a specific number of coins, so I decided to go with another SMB3-esque battle for a bonus item.

IGGY KOOPA'S CASTLE
We're almost out of the woods now! We've reached the fourth castle!

More lightning! Also, Dry Bones.

Lightning CAN strike twice here.

Those spiky pillars WILL come down to impale you. Those clouds and castle walls are actually on Layer 3.

That's a BIG smasher!

When Iggy waves his wand, lightning falls from the ceiling. There's also a Podoboo complicating things.

good work on everything so far i'm liking the palette and graphic style i'll use some of this experience for my own benefits one day. keep up the talent :)
The design of your levels look good. Your palette choices are very good and they fit a specific level theme. Keep up the good work.
For the bonus, try this sprite. I know it's probably too late, but you could always have another bonus challenge in a later world.

About the levels, I like what you've done with Layer 3 there, and I think that's the first time I've ever seen you use the large smashers in that tileset. Nice background palette in the bonus battle as well. I look forward to seeing World 5...mountains always have been one of my favorite world themes.

Well, Misty Mountains 1 is done. It's not very misty yet.

MISTY MOUNTAINS 1 - FOOTHILL FROLIC

Hammer Bros are the biggest threat in this level.

More Hammer Bros, but there are no blocks to knocks them out from under.

Sumo Bros. can be a pretty big problem too. There was a Star Coin here. To get it, you should run under those Sumo Bros. as fast as you can!

It's time for a double post because I got another level done. :D

MISTY MOUNTAINS 2 - MINE YOUR OWN BUSINESS!

It's my third mine level to have a miner pun (haha) in the title.

It really can't be a mine level without some Diggin' Chucks, can it?

Sometimes, mining involves blowing up walls with explosives. There was a wall blocking access to that Star Coin, as well as a conveniently-placed Bob-Omb. Both are gone now.

Here, blowing up blocks won't always be a good thing. You'll be opening up a bottomless pit if you let those blocks get blown up.

I've already played this original version, but the revamp looks cool! I will consider playing it again!
This revamp should be MUCH better than the original SMB5R. 3 years have passed since I made that, and a lot of new resources have come out since then. My skills have also improved.

Time for another update! I've finally finished Misty Mountains 3, which has probably been the hardest level to design so far.

MISTY MOUNTAINS 3 - NIGHT LINES

It's a night-time level featuring line guides, and those are the reason the level was so tough to design.

This level also introduces ON/OFF switches. It's not mandatory to hit them, but you'll be rewarded if you do.

Sometimes, you'll need to duck under upside-down Chainsaws (unless you're small).

Don't try going for this Star Coin without pressing the Blue Switch!

Double posting AGAIN because I finally got back to work on this after recording another LP of Super Mario World, making my HLDC level, and helping with GFX remoderation.

MISTY MOUNTAINS 4 - CRYSTAL WATER CAVERN

Originally, this was going to be a haunted cave level, but I felt more like doing a watery cave, so that's what I ended up doing. Well, there WAS a watery cave in World 5 of SMB5R, so yeah.

Buzzy Beetles and Koopas are the least of your worries.

There are plenty of waterfalls to swim up. Thankfully, they don't have a current that pushes you down.

Buster Beetles will be the toughest enemies to deal with in this level.

You'll have to be careful when you jump out of the water for that Star Coin.

I usually post my comments on IRC or YouTube, but since I haven't said anything in a while, my thoughts about World 5 so far:

- 5-1: This looks like quite a difficulty spike with all those Hammer Brothers. Is that background an edit of an existing one from SMW or one of the SMAS Mario games?
- 5-2: I really like the aesthetics of this level. Are you planning on having explodable blocks anywhere else? (Besides Al-Koopa Training Camp, that is.)
- 5-3: Nice background gradient, though that level would still benefit from a Layer 3 background as well. I've always liked nighttime levels.
- 5-4: Nice palettes and decor. I do have a waterfall custom block with a current if you want to use it, though I worry that it might be a bit too strong. Also, that second Yoshi coin might be collectable from the right side without jumping onto the platform if you hug the right wall.

Keep up the good work, in any case. Maybe this will be the second ROM hack (or third) that I do an LP of eventually.
