Mario & Luigi: Kola Kingdom Quest - A revamp of Super Mario Bros. 5 Reborn - Beta now available for testing!

Standard

Nice graphics, the level design still looks neat and funny. You used the sprites well, like that tweaked pokey and the ice birdo :).

Good luck, I hope you'll get this finished for C3!
Well, C3 is only 2 days away, and I still have 12 levels to do, plus a Bonus Battle. I also have to draw a factory city background for 8-1, as well as a spacy background for World 9. MAYBE I'll get this done by the end of the year. We'll see.

WINTER PEAK 7 - SHIVERING SHROOMS

Well, World 7 would have to have an athletic stage sooner or later. This level was pretty difficult to do, mostly because I wasn't sure what sprites I wanted to use and whether or not I wanted the level to auto-scroll. Ultimately, I went with Koopas, a Bullet Bill Generator, Flying Rock Platforms reskinned as clouds, and no auto-scroll.

Bouncy mushrooms will still propel you to great heights, but they can also propel you right into a Bullet Bill if you're not careful.

These moving clouds, combined with ice physics, make for some tricky platforming.

WINTER SECRET - SNOWBALLIN'

Why are the Chucks shoveling snow out here? This isn't a driveway.

Snowballin' would be an inappropriate name for a level with no snowballs, wouldn't it?

The snowball-dodging action is occasionally broken up by tricky jumps between platforms patrolled by Parakoopas.

Looks like impossible to you finish this until the C3 Winter, but at least release a demo of 7 worlds.
7 Worlds may be a bit too much for a demo when there are only 11 more full levels and 1 Bonus Battle to do. Either way, I'd have to be at my computer all day without food, drink, rest, or bathroom breaks to get this done by tomorrow. I might make a preview video to show off at C3 though.

Anyway, World 7 is finally complete!

LEMMY KOOPA'S CASTLE

The theme of this castle is BOMBS! Pipes in the ceiling continuously spit out Bob-Ombs. These Bob-Ombs have short fuses, and they can destroy bridges when they explode.

Keeping with the bomb theme, the Bomb Bros. from Mine Your Own Business make a comeback.

The second part of the castle requires you to ride Albatosses as they fly by. They constantly move left, while the screen scrolls right, so you have to be quick with the jump button.

Why all the explosives? Well, it's because Lemmy seems to have been influenced by either Osama bin Laden, Michael Bay, or Mouser.
He's a Mouser reskin.

It's beginning to look just like an ice world...well, actually, it was in my last post here, but whatever. I wouldn't bother with a demo at this point, and definitely don't shoot for a C3 release, but getting it finished by the end of 2014 might be doable. (11—or 12?—levels in 13 days...)

Anyway, about the levels themselves...

7-2: Interesting concept for a level.
7-3: Well, it's hard to say much from two screenshots, though I do hope you got those ceiling Buzzies working properly. The graphics here almost look a little bit Sonic-esque.
7-4: Nice, a high-altitude snowy level. And it looks like you've done quite a bit with the gimmick as well.
7-5: I like the crystal-y aesthetics of this one, though I notice that because of the translucency, the pipes don't hide the Torpedo Ted launchers properly....
7-6: This one looks pretty cool as well. I like the night atmosphere. Though are you sure those Flurries have the proper palette?
7-F: You might want to have those moving blocks shifted up one pixel. The code at the end of this post should do the trick if you want to use it. The stage looks pretty nice, though, with a nice variety, and I like those Icebars. Though I think your Ice Birdo is missing her bow.
7-7: I still say you could have had more enemy types in this one (maybe some flying Bumpties or ice-spitting Volcano Lotuses or something?), but it works. Should be a pretty decent level.
7-S: Also a nice combination of aesthetics and gimmicks. About all it needs now to complete the snowball theme would be a reskinned Chomp Rock sprite (or better yet, the actual pushable snowball sprite from YI).
7-C: BOMBS! This one should be fun. I really like the look of the outside section, even if I'm not a fan of autoscroll. (And are you sure a Mouser reskin won't be too easy for a World 7 boss?) Also, do you have parallax on that background? You could have the clouds scrolling at a different rate from the castle walls.

I must admit, I thought this world was a bit too large...the only other one with that many levels was World 4, and there are lots of different things that can be done with a forest world. But you seem to have done a pretty decent job of keeping with the theme while still having enough variety. I suppose the cold never bothered me anyway.

And now, the code I mentioned:

Code
!Bnk1Freespace = $01FFF6

org $0182F3
	dw !Bnk1Freespace

org !Bnk1Freespace
	LDA $D8,x
	BNE $03
	DEC $14D4,x
	DEC $D8,x
	RTS

I'm working on a hack! Check it out here. Progress: 64/95 levels.
Thanks for the comments yet again.

With the distractions of Christmas and my birthday over with, I finally got back to work on this and finished up the first level of World 8.

METAL KINGDOM 1 - HOME SWEET HOME?

Wait....Is this REALLY the Mushroom Kingdom?

Everything's so...mechanical!
The Mecha-Koopas here are just the same old Mecha-Koopas from vanilla SMW, while the Mecha-Venuses are based on red-stemmed Venus Firetraps. Unlike real Venuses, these guys can't be killed with fireballs or cape spins. The only way to kill them is to throw a stunned Mecha-Koopa at them.

These piston-looking things are just reskinned Thwomps, and one of them is guarding the contents of some of the ? Blocks.

I'm surprised I didn't die while recording this. This level is pretty tough.

In a nutshell for me I love the graphics, sprites the level design
It is an excellent work
Good luck for the future !

Update time! Things are about to heat up now!

METAL KINGDOM 2 - FIERY FURNACE

Since this level IS in a furnace, there'll be a lot of fire pillars.

The fact that you're either on a conveyor belt or reskinned Skull Raft most of the time makes it easy to get burned.

Things heat up even more after the checkpoint. The back area color here is ExAnimated and cycles through several shades of red to create a hot glowing effect. The gradient at the bottom is Layer 3 Fake HDMA since real HDMA wouldn't work.

While avoiding getting flattened, be sure not to let your ride out of your sight!

VIDEO, since screenshots don't do this level justice

That pun made my day xD
More seriously, this level is good, graphics are cool hot (that gradient!) but the borders of conveyor belts aren't animated, it's a small thing, though.
I noticed there are a small amount of enemies: Mechakoopas, Thwomps and the fire pillar. Not a problem, sprites variety is a good thing but it's not really needed, especially here because the level design and the fire pillars are fairly enough to be challenging.
Other than this, you made a nice work, keep it up!
World 8-1 and 8-2 are really good levels, but I only seen a issue:
on w8-1 pause the video at 1:55,if the player is small he can be locked if jump to get these coins without destroy the bricks.
Well,continue with the good work.
Check out my profile to see a list of SMW Hacks I made and where to find the latest and best version of them.
Thanks for playing and have fun!

I'm surprised I didn't die while recording this. This level is pretty tough.

I keep thinking of Scrap Brain Zone from Sonic the Hedgehog after looking at the pictures.

Haha, nice work.
Oh man those industrial levels look great! They're very reminiscent of Sonic levels, and I mean this in the best possible way.

I especially like the usage of mecha-koopas in the first level (has anyone else ever done this before? it seems so obvious) and the fire geysers in the second.

Looks challenging. I like the idea of the first level. The fact that piranha plants can't be killed with cape spin/fireballs makes this level definitely harder. The second level looks also really good. I agree that it's focusing only on the fire pillars. There could be more enemies, but it looks good as it is. I like the atmosphere of this level and it looks hard too. Nice!
Thanks for the feedback yet again, guys. It's time for another update.

METAL KINGDOM 3 - CRUSH CORRIDOR

This could be considered the spiritual sequel to Crush Cavern from Kamek's Island. The focus here is on Thwomp and Thwimp variants, which have been reskinned to look more mechanical to fit the factory setting.

When not hopping back and forth, these Thwimp reskins will actively follow you to try to crush you.

The Giant Thwomp reskins shake the ground when they come down, leaving you open to an attack even if they miss you.

This Star Coin will be trickier to get than it looks.

In the second half of the level, sections of the spiked ceiling will join the Thwomps and Thwimps in their effort to crush you. You better move quickly here or you WILL die.

PREVIEW - METAL SECRET 1 - LASER TIME, BOYZZ

The opening of the level. Gaddly explains one of the biggest threats in this level, but not without further driving home the reference made by the level's name. Thick, bluish-white laser beams will fire periodically from objects like the one near the bottom-right side of the screen. If you're caught in the line of fire, you'll die instantly. There are other laser-based obstacles here too, like floating orbs that shoot laser beams and lasers that fire diagonally from spiky orbs, but those won't kill you unless you're small.

Nice screens. Keep up the good work!
Thanks, Kamehameha.

The level I previewed in my last post is now complete, and it's pretty tough, so much so that I gave up on recording a video and did end up having to tone it down a bit.

METAL SECRET 1 - LASER TIME, BOYZZ

Slightly reworded Gaddly message. Personally, I don't recommend playing the level while wearing 3D glasses. There is no 3D, and you may get a headache.

Here's one of those floating orbs that shoots lasers. Big thanks to imamelia for coding them since I can barely ASM myself. I've begun to think it's connected to brain hemisphere dominance. I'm right-brained, which is why I'm better at graphics and level design than ASM.

This isn't as easy as it looks. Sure, that Hothead moves slowly and is circumnavigating a pretty wide platform, but the platform is a conveyor belt, and there's one of those deadly blue lasers being fired onto it.

Avoiding death by lasers to grab a Star Coin.

Decided to take a break from factory levels in Metal Kingdom to work on the secret world of this hack, Lunaria, a world set on the Moon!

LUNARIA 1 - LUNAR MADNESS

You don't have to Bullet Bounce to get up to that Bomb Bro's platform. You can jump a LOT higher out here due to Moon Physics

Chain Chomps on the Moon? Why not?

LUNARIA 2 - HOT OUT HERRE

It's a fiery level...IN SPACE!

The orange blocks can be broken with fireballs.

These Yellow Venuses spit their fireballs in an arc toward you.

VIDEO

LUNARIA 3 - DEEP SPACE BIND

This level is inspired by the Star Maze in Super Mario Land 2. It even has the music.

The more orange-ish stars move either up and down or back and forth between two solid objects. They're just reskins of the Electricity sprite included with Romi's SpriteTool.

If you've managed to stay big up to this point, you'll be able to take this less dangerous alternate path to the goal flag. You'll also get a Star Coin.

Some great work here! Really like how this hack manages to be consistent despite its length, and the levels look really fun to play through overall. The levels shown here are very nice, and I can see some really interesting obstacles on Lunaria 2 - at first it seemed a bit too easier for a special world, but the difficulty seems just fine when looking at the level as a whole.
Very, very nice graphics and levels. Is it possible to make the levels more "floaty"? Just to give it a more moon feel.
The hack is over soon , good luck to finish this hack has superb and my favorite hack air is yours "mario and luigi starling is land"
Good luck

Le hack est bientôt fini, bonne chance pour finir ce hack qui a l'air superbe et mon préféré hack est le tien " mario et luigi starling is land "
