Invasion From Kharrag (Procrastinating......)

This is my new hack, Invasion From Kharrag, which I have shown some screens of in the WIP thread. Now that I've started editing the player graphics, have more stuff!

The plot: A man called Gorael is a soldier based in Axheim, Gantox. While on leave, he's knocked out in a pub brawl at night. When he wakes up, he's still in the pub, and it's much more damaged than a pub fight could cause. He therefore grabs his oxygen bottle and sets out to get to the bottom of this.


As the sign implies, you can enter this shop. Later shops won't be ruined.

Wrecked train. You can stand on the coupler and enter it.
It's a British Class 319, by the way.

At the other end of the plot exposition train, as I'll call it.

Now, it's unusual to show Course Clear screens, but this shows something important - I don't have goal tapes in this hack.

As for the status bar still saying Mario, I'll fix this very soon. And the cutoff pixel at the bottom is a ZSNES glitch.

EDIT: Final count of worlds will be 8 (excluding secrets).
The worlds are:

YES! I love this kind of "nothing to do with Mario" sort of hack! I'm all for supporting this idea. The storyline is very interesting and mysterious and I really like the graphical style you use. My only suggestion is to make the dirt ground have a bit more of a texture.

Keep it up, I can't wait to see more! ^.^
Very different style from a lot of hacks. The graphics look nice though they lack some texture as Eevee said. I presume the status bar is going to be modified or removed so I wish you luck on this hack!

MORE SCREENS, this time of the second level.

This used to be a train. Note the collapsed overhead wires.


Sewer entrance. On the left edge you can see the remains of a bridge.

The next batch of screens will probably be the overworld, as I'm working on that right now. Or maybe a Layer 3 BG...

I'll take that into account when designing the sewer tileset.

I've decided to change the colour of the bricks in the second level, and I've (finally) added a slightly different texture to the ground tiles:

Not bad at all. Custom overworld graphics would look nice (and it will add more depth to the hack).

What music should I use for this level by the way? I don't want anything sampled, and it must work with Addmusic 4.05 and on ZMZ.

The tileset dosen't look bad, but for me it's hard to differentiate
between the background and foreground. Other than I like it.

I've made the BG palette slightly paler: (this is also the secret path)

As you can see, I've also removed the railings from the pipes except on the top of the horizontal ones.


Towards the end of the first sublevel.

This looks promising considering the number of paths I can see in those screenshots.
I'm now doing the secret level, the Carbon Recycler.
There were some issues with the Layer 2 smashers I wanted to use, so I scrapped them and reskinned some Thwomps instead, the first of many sprite reskins.

They come out of the pipes in the ceiling, and some rails are positioned in such a way to suggest the Thwomps run on them.

(and the fans and conveyor belts are ExAnimated.)

I've fixed the issues mentioned in my last post, so you get to see some actual progress.


If you're small, you can access the pipe above and reach a secret route with powerups and such.


This smasher has hit some blocks submerged in the slag/lava, allowing you to spinjump on it and move on.


Falling platforms.


Another falling platform and some fireballs. The fireballs won't be reskinned.

With good timing, you can enter this pipe while powered up, so I'll fix that later.


The background looks noticeably more damaged here than on the lower level.


Random ventilation systems. And there's a smasher in that pipe.

I suppose the grey bricks were always a continuity error of sorts, since if you look at the building from the outside, they're brown:
