Super Mario Down Under- Demo now ready

Standard

This is has been my pet hacking project for a few months. So far, I've basically completed the first two worlds, as well as random levels from worlds 3-5.

I currently have some ExGFX and custom sprites, and plan to add custom blocks and patches soon. I'm a bit paranoid about using AddMusic. I destroyed another ROM with it. My current vision is a 60ish level hack complete with ExGFX, sprites, custom music, etc. (Cutscenes are also a possibility.)

The plot is as follows: Mario has decided to get away from the Mushroom Kingdom and heads down under to a land called Terranova. While there, he encounters a Moa, named Mele (may-lay) being harassed by Koopas. He saves him and learns that Bowser has set up shop in Terranova, kidnapping the Moas and their eggs. Mele is also concerned about a biologist living in a cabin, named Ellie, who may have been kidnapped by Bowser. It's up to Mario to liberate Terranova from Bowser!

Looks cool, though I don't think I myself might play it. Other people will though.

It looks like you have some experience at SMW hacking, too.
looks fun, although in that castle level, i see 2 backgrounds. i'm guessing one of them is a layer 2 or layer 3 background. other than that, can't wait to play this!
My Inspiring Quotes on Personal Growth and Change:

"Resolved financial/personal problems equal greater growth!"

"The only constant thing in life is change; nothing is set in stone. The old is replaced with the new. Forgive yourself for past mistakes. When many different problems in your life are resolved (personal, financial, etc.), newfound strength and confidence is gained in the process. Usually, failures, lack of assertiveness, disappointments, incompetence, low self-esteem and lack of self-respect, financial struggles, and setbacks can cause us to change and take action to solve any problem, leading to increased strength and confidence. This you learn from experience.

I have been experiencing this aforementioned newfound strength and confidence myself for the past FOUR to EIGHT years or so, getting stronger with each passing year, learning with each mistake I make and becoming more joyful in the process. Because of this newfound confidence I've acquired over the years, finding my passion is of utmost importance in 2022! You can develop this strength and confidence in yourself as well!"

To whoever's reading this, you are amazing and you are capable of doing equally amazing things. Gather confidence and be yourself! Say goodbye to the old you and welcome the new you! It wants to arise every moment, but you don't let it. Learn from your mistakes and never make that mistake again! Find your passion and live it!"

Finding my passion in life, but I may still be active on SMWCentral from time to time. Still enjoy playing many hacks, but I'm widening my perspective on life and opening myself to the new.
do you need a tester
so i can help you with less bugs
I have posted a link on to my Youtube channel. I would greatly appreciate comments from viewers regarding the hack.

It's looking good but the castle's background should be fixed. Use only one of them, either the Layer 2 or Layer 3 one. As for the brambles level, why are these spikes so red-ish? Were they supossed to be "bloody-looking"?

Looks fine ^^ You may remove some of the bush though, as they fill the whole area.

The palette of the foreground brambles seems weird. The red is fine (and interesting), but the green should get darker from the middle to the sides. So just move the colours around a bit and it should be fine.

Foreground palette needs some work here. It's about the dirt itself, the dots have to be lighter than the dirt around them. Then it will look much better :3

Nothing to say here. The yoshi coin looks interesting.

Looks classic :)

As the others said, remove one background layer ^^

Very nice overworld, it keeps the feeling of the original game perfectly, especially in terms of decoration. There are some perspective errors though, but I don't have the time to fix them for you right now.

Very nice combination of foreground and background :3

The leveldesing looks well done!

Nice palette! I don't like 1-high bullet bill shooters, but that's just my personal opinion.

Now this looks interesting, it's like my favourite screenshot. The black back area colour creates an unique atmosphere you don't see in much hacks, but it doesn't seem poorly made! The foreground graphics look good aswell, though the might get repetetive after some screens...

Well, cool hack! Keep up the good work :3
I like this a lot. The theme is pretty neat and removing the spin jump makes the game a lot more difficult. How do the Rexes freak out?

Well, thank you. I'm glad you like it.

I edited the Rexes so that they move really fast when the player jumps on them (about 3X normal speed.)

This looks pretty good so far, but a few of the palettes could use a little work.

SUNSET HILLS
The background palette here is too bright and too green. try making it a tad duller and more yellow.

NAKED BEACH
I'd prefer ground that looks more like sand, but I can understand why you used GFX15 here. I do think you should reuse the background from Nambucca Trail though, except with a different palette. It looks more beach-y than the vanilla hills background. Alternatively, you could throw in some water from GFX2C and edit the hills to look more like islands, similar to what I did in World 3 of Kamek's Island.

CUMULUS HEIGHTS
I don't like that back area color. I'd personally choose something a lot lighter and less saturated, like a more lilac color. Try this:

Hue: 190
Sat: 180
Lum: 180
Quintesson Judge: Silence, or you will be held in contempt of this court!
Hot Rod: I have nothing but contempt for this court!
- Transformers the Movie (1986)
usually, your background palettes are way too bright and saturated. either soften them (either lighten) or darken them. the ghost house and the forest levels look very interesting and they both have decent level design.

also, onto grammar: do not place punctuation inside parentheses if it's joining a sentence. only place it outside a parentheses.

anyways, looking good! #smw{:peace:}

The design overall I have mixed feelings on. The first few screenshots do seem to start off pretty nice on the design though be wary of where you place your sprites. Spice up some screenshots there. Going further, it does seem to get more impressive. In SALA CAVERNS, make the foreground tiles that you can pass through slightly lighter (especially the outlines of it). Near the end, the design seems to get extremely interesting, there are some empty spots but nothing major.

Keep it up!
