So yeah, apparently making threads for your level is starting to become a thing, so here we go. I actually had my map16 page set up beforehand, but it was half a page so I had to cut it down to 5 rows, which was quite difficult, but I got it done. I'm currently only done with one screen, but I have some plans in my mind. I'm probably gonna use some skullrafts as I just discoverd that I can actually make them float over bottom-less pits, which seems like a quite cool scenario. But yeah, that's a bit in the future, so for now just have the first screenshot!
I'd say it looks cool, but I'm a bit confused right now, as this doesn't look like you are only using GFX present in the rom, let's say the candles on the different ground tiles, these are all custom graphics, are they not? Sure, you're using the original GFX as a base but it's still a new tile. Maybe I misinterpreted the rules, so.. is this allowed to create new tiles like that? I thought we're only using ExGFX for having several tilesets available in a level.
FPI: You're allowed to merge tiles like that (as well as rotate existing tiles). What Undy likely did was take those tiles from other places in the ROM, merge them in one ExGFX file, and then edit the 8x8 properties in the Map16 editor to create a "new" tile using old graphics. The only stipulation with this contest is that you cannot draw new tiles.
Remember though, graphics aren't everything. This might be a really nice looking level, but if the design isn't there, someone else will very likely take the throne.
Actually I'm using layer 2 as I'm not sure if this would all be allowed otherwise. For example the castle blocks would have cutoff at the edges without layer 2 and I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be allowed to fix that with anything but layer 2 tricks.
Layer 2 usage likely has more to do with how much more creative you can get with the decorations. It allows you to do a lot of things that would normally be impossible with just Layer 1.

Exactly! I totally plan to use this thing in some parts of my level. *CoughMinesCough*
However, I don't know if some parts of the above ground areas will work with this, because there's this background stuff I have to do which would consume a lot of Map16 space I have.
Don't worry, it's not all about how artsy you are with the tilesets. Level design tends to be the most important scoring element of these contests; if your level plays well, it can mean a lot more than simply having a beautiful-looking level.
That's not to say having both isn't possible, but you'd be surprised how carried away people have gotten with the aesthetics in past contests.
Well, the lack of a moving background kinda annoyed me so I decided to switch layer 2 for a real one and while I was at it I also completely switched themes. I guess line guides are kinda overused in the contest already, but I won't focus on riding platforms on them too much, so I guess it'll be fine. I also never actually used line guides before, so I'm pretty excited to see all the possibilities.
It looks so beatiful! You've always got great paletts and I like the brighter ones even more than the dark ones... The design seems to be good and even challenging as well, but although you don't want to focus on it, please remember to implement one line guided ride at least! To avoid losing the well chosen decoration there, you may just make it a little puzzle or a platform to follow while actually being on solid tiles (if you understand what I mean)... Looking forward to seeing more!

Undy, where did you get that speckled thing, or what ever that thing is that is in the lava tiles and in the dirt tiles? I've spent 5 minutes trying to search for it... sad.

After browsing for 2 minutes, I found it in GFX1D. It's part of an overworld tile or something.
So here are some more screenshots which show some actual gameplay. Btw I think I might do a livestream of me working on the level if I feel like it. Would be nice to hear if there's any interest in that!
Also here is a userbar that links here! Feel free to use it if you want to. All support is appreciated ;)

Wow, a live stream of you making a level? I'd LOVE to see that! (that wasn't sarcasm)
Not really any complaints, this looks good already, but I fail to see what purpose, if any, that line guide serves. There's a platform on it, though, so I'm guessing there's a powerup up there that I can't see?
