Tip: You can use the SMW Customizer to edit tons of misc. features in SMW, including the speed of Bullet Bills, how many points a 3-UP moon gives you, and more!
Between finishing up my 12 days entry, college starting back up, and other distractions, I'm getting quite a late start on my VLDC entry, but I finally have just enough to start up my thread.
Not much right now, but here's what I have for the outside part of the castle. I'm going for a castle built on a floating landmass, but will feature quite a bit of action inside the castle as well. (The little pipes will have boss fireball flames "shooting" out of them, I just forgot to set up the animation before taking this LM screenie.)
Rest assured, I have plenty more ideas for my level than what's being shown right now, and I'll be sure to share them here sometime soon.
I'm liking how this is looking so far, but the palette I find could use some work. Darken the foreground, it feels a bit stuck in daytime to me. Maybe the background too, but that might be pushing it.

Looks pretty good to me though darkening the palette will make it seem better to me. Just be careful to maintain balance while making palettes between the background and foreground.

I think the palette it's fine for the castle blocks, but I think the grass doesn't look fitting with the nighttime BG. Try to use some darker palettes or more blue-ish colours. The BG could be also darkened a little, but it's nothing major.
I'm not sure why I made the castle green on the inside, it was just a gut feeling and I went with it. I also made the castle brighter on the inside since, you know, every building needs its indoor lighting.
Hope you guys like this so far, I'll put actual individual screenies or possibly a video up in my next update here.
I really like the atmosphere you have going here, but I do think those spinies in the water look pretty bad. Perhaps you should make the fish have a blue hue too so that it looks more natural.
I'm really loving the concept and level design of the level. I knew you would do something really nice for VLDC by judging your previous works. Though I don't like the shading/color of the top of the castle pillars, they're way too dark. Also Torchkas is right about the spinies in the water.
Those things aside, I'd like to see a next update of this level!
I made slight changes to the pillars' palettes and got the spinies looking as good as I could get them (I had to make the sublevel use layer 2 as a result).
