Azure Chaotic (Demo 2 released!)

Haven't finished this yet, but it's very well done. It feels totally new and is a lot of fun to play. I did notice that with the star glide, I was able to die inside a wall in the training level. :(

My only real concern is that, while this level style is great, it may get a tad repetitive when you end up having a lot of levels. I don't know if this is intended to be a mini-hack or what, but for now, I really enjoy this.

Also, the two hacks aren't really competition. Both of you worked very hard and both came out with an excellent demo. But if competition makes both of you work harder, then I'm all for it. :P

I have some tricks so this level style doesn't get repetitive, and you never know how much one new powerup can change how you navigate a stage, not to mention wondering just when the next item will appear and what it is. ^_^ And this definately isn't going to be a mini-hack. I'm not quite aiming for Super Mario Infinity-long, but it's going to be long.

I don't consider it competition - I didn't even think of it that way until you guys said so, actually. If you want to think of it like that though, go ahead. ^_^

I just finished this demo... twice... and this is indeed incredible! I love puzzle-type games and all the custom features makes this feel like a whole new game. I can't wait to see how the story unfolds and more challenging levels. Excellent work, Azure!!

Well, it's featured now, and that means that a 4-level demo is now officially the highest rated hack. Guess you guys really like it. ^_^

I've gotten lots of ASM done, and I also have an overworld, sans events, level placements, or anything else, though I do know where the already-existing levels will go.
Any comments? (There's a graphic bug on the small mountains where part of it is green; ignore that)

Heh heh. I see you like Panel de Pon/Tetris Attack. I'm surprised I've not seen those mountains/flower in a hack before. It works well on an overworld, especially since the rest of the overworld also looks similar.
I'm part of the Testers for Hire thread, so if you'd like something play tested, no matter what it is, PM me, and I'll give you honest feedback. Anything else is in my profile.

I was playing through this demo (again) when I came across the weirdest glitch. My only regret is that I haven't the slightest idea how I did it.

I've been subscribed to your youtube channel for a while now Azure and never knew you did such great hacks.

The power-up system, the crystal, the sprites the wall jumps all of them are incredible.
Holy shi-, that OW owns Azure. Keep up the good work.
That map's looking great so far. Keep it up!

That is very strange... did it stay that way when you went to a new area? If it did, it's not that big of a deal. But either way, I'd have no idea how to fix it.

And I never knew you came to this site, Mox. Been a while since I last saw you.

It's probably my favorite game of all time (right above Viewtiful Joe). And liking a game that much means you get insanely good at it (ask SNN - I pulled a x14 chain as the first move of the entire match during a netplay with him).

How many power ups do you have planned for this? Enough to fill the box completely?
I've had the same glitch as LDA had. But it was only that one enemy, and only once.

Weird I say.

I wouldn't have the box if it wasn't going to be filled. And I'm still accepting new ideas if you have them. ^_^

How about ground pound?

Doesn't mario act like doing a ground pound when flying, then landing at high speed. So it should be possible.
You could make it that if you press down while gliding, cleru glides downwards in high speed, and ground pounds when landing, or something like that.
It's been a while since I've touched a proper SMW hack, but that doesn't mean I've forgotten what constitutes a good one. Great work on this, no real big complaints. The speed is an issue at some points, but as long as you work with that in your level design it should be okay. At first I thought the walljump was difficult, until I realized that those strange blocks were info blocks. After I read that, I found them surprisingly easy to do, and fun at that. The only new thing I had much problem with was the shooting diamond that you can control the direction of, but that's probably just me. It's good to see someone using the RPG Overworld, I just hope you don't let it fool you into thinking you can't have that many levels. All in all, I think you're doing a marvelous job and I look forward to seeing where you take this.

As for the little power-up badges, all I can think of right now would be something defensive (adding another health bar, perhaps?) and one that would be hidden in certain levels and useful for finding some kind of secret exit. If I think of more, I'll be sure to let you know.

It reverted back to its normal self when I took the downward passage. It seems to only happen with that enemy when you kill it and loop back to the left side of the same room. The strange thing is that it doesn't seem to happen to any other enemies in the level.

Edit:

Did you know that you die when you warp star into the wall?
I think you could have a free flying star power with some kinda projectile weapon for a final boss fight.

EDIT: another suggestion is with the way the world map is maybe you could have a secret level that is hard to find. maybe giving it no name and a unique sprite that would make it hard to guess it was actually a level.

If you have Kirby superstar in milky way galaxy's there was a level like this.

Well, it's been a while since the last real update, so I guess it's time to show my progress.

First, starting out with the modified stuff. Some miscellaneous graphics were changed, since the old graphics didn't perfectly fit the new style. (At this rate, I'm going to change every single bit of GFX by the time I'm done with the hack. ^_^)

Part of the overworld, where you start out. The area name will display even when you're not on a level - though it may make it a bit confusing referring to multiple levels in the same area, it just looks more... natural. (And it lets me create new level tiles with an RPG overworld without the name displaying when it's unrevealed.)

Another OW shot, a bit farther down. What's that gold tile? Quite possibly the biggest surprise in the next demo - so I'm not telling.

New level, new tileset and new enemy type. I'd show you a new powerup, but that would take the fun out of finding it yourself. ^_^

This looks very nice. Allso, you should make hidden paths in the overworld that you can explore by yourself. Just a suggestion.
The over world really gives an rpg feel, great job! it looks very good. I think that you should make the bg even darker in the first screenshot so that you can see fg better though.
