What are some really good metal bands, like Metallica and Megadeth?

Can't tell if you're looking mostly for oldschool bands, but try Death, Kreator, Bathory(old), Nuclear Assult, Celtic Frost(old), Napalm Death, Carcass, I'm sure I could name more.

Give this a go.

I was hoping you'd reply. #smw{^_^}
Thanks for this, I'll check those bands out.

I forgot Onslaught and Sodom.

My personal favorite metal band is Judas Priest, but I assume you are already aware of them since they are quite well-known in the metal scene. If you are looking for some more underrated bands, there are quite a few I personally dig. Accept, Flotsam and Jetsam, Satan, Diamond Head, Angel Witch specifically come to mind, if you are into classic heavy metal and thrash (my taste in metal is pretty much limited to that, sorry).
Thanks for the bands, guys.

Ummm i don't like that much metal but here are some cool bands which are probably either more on the hardcore/noise/sludge end of things or the hipster end of things (or both): Deafheaven, Stone Titan, The Melvins, Dillinger Escape Plan (mostly their older stuff), Boris.

Also Black Flag's later stuff is basically metal, and they were heavily influenced by metal (and heavily influenced a lot of metal to come), but they're generally considered more of a hardcore band.

for a second I was like woah where's melvins but erga got me thx man

Mastodon, Earth, Black Sabbath obv, Sunn 0))), Isis, Pelican
Hipster metal is god fucking awful. -.-
As is just about anything hipsters do.

Have you listened to any of the bands I listed? Just because hipsters like something doesn't necessarily mean it's shit, how the fuck do you expect to find new music if you have stupid prejudices like that?

Anyway I forgot a really obvious choice: Rage Against The Machine. By far the best band to mix metal with rap.

Also noise rock/grindcoreish/experimental metal bands: The Locust, Melt-Banana, Lightning Bolt, Fantômas

If you mean hipster by bands like Black Veil Brides, Avenged Sevenfold, A Day to Remember, Asking Alexandria, Pierce the Veil, any "metalcore" band really, then you're referring to scene. I personally really dislike scene, almost as much as I dislike "alternative" (yeah, kids actually call music alt at my school, and not 90s stuff either).

If you mean hipster by the bands that erga listed, then not only are you wrong (Melvins do fucking covers of the Cars) you're also being weirdly prejudiced like erga said.

also, RATM is pretty fantastic, 1st album is easily the best, but the next two are ridiculously good as well.

Yes, I have. Who said I was even talking about those bands in particular? I'm merely talking about hipster metal in general.

Please explain how an opinion can be wrong. Btw, I like the Melvins.

Black Veil Brides

I hate that band so much don't even get me started. Kids at my school love them. I DON'T UNDERSTAND.

For me, progressive metal is best metal.
- Pain of Salvation
- Dream Theater
- Porcupine Tree (though it's mainly just rock, they get pretty heavy sometimes - this song is a fine example)
- Haken

from the extreme/tech/death-metal subgenre:
- Edge of Sanity
- Opeth
- Gojira
- Between the Buried and Me

As in they aren't really that hipster. They sure as hell aren't trying to be pretentious about their music, they just do weird music.

Never said otherwise, mang.

Btw, that does remind me, Cousin Earl, try looking into some of the crossover thrash groups like Suicidal Tendencies, D.R.I., The Exploited, etc. after they made their switch to more thrashy material.

Also, some of those 80's d-beat punk groups such as Discharge, Asocial, Skitsystem, Anti-Cimex, etc. have a rather fuzzy line between punk and metal. Might be worth your time.

There's also Disattack. Pretty much just Carcass before they became Carcass, again with the grey area between metal and punk.

That's a shitload of music for me to check out. Thanks guys - especially you, Face. :P

Also, are there any decent nu-metal bands? I got into Maximum the Hormone after watching Death Note. They're not bad.

Helmet and Dope Body are both kind of nu-metal although Helmet started before nu-metal became a thing and Dope Body are hipster-nu-metal (but considering that nu-metal is awful it's not like my people can make it any worse than it is).

Seconding the Skitsystem recommendation and also saying you should listen to Haust, Hot Graves, Alpinist, Okkulturati, and Martyrdod. Also, Trap Them are great.

Celtic Frost's album To Mega Therion is sort of a predecessor to these guys, as is Bathory's self-titled.

Ulver's album Bergtatt is kind of what you're looking for if you like Metallica at their more sensitive moments, and Vektor and Aspid are two pretty cool thrash bands that a lot of people in the scene seem to like. Voivod are cool if you want to listen to some Canadian metal, and they also covered the Batman theme, which is neat, if you like Batman. I like Anacrusis a lot but you don't hear about them much; I'm not sure if they're considered "good", per se, but they'll always have a place in my heart.

Sabbat, Craft, Disfear, Midnight, Entombed, late-period Darkthrone,Possessed, and Vio-Lence are all bands you might dig, too. Vio-Lence are the most thrashy out of that group and don't really fit in, but I added them since they just came to mind.

Kyuss are sort of on the line between metal and classic rock, if you haven't heard any stoner metal yet check them out. St Vitus, The Gault, Subrosa, Sons of Otis, Cough and Warning/40 Watt Sun are sort of in the same boat (Generally if you like stoner metal you'll like doom and vice versa. As a warning, Warning/40 Watt Sun (they're basically the same band) are easily the wimpiest band I've mentioned in this post, and basically sound like if Ozzy-era Black Sabbath started singing about feelings. They're very good though.)

I know you like Iron Maiden so if you haven't heard Diamond Head yet, listen to them. Metallica covered "Am I Evil", so they have that going for them too.
I'd call Helmet more of an early cross of post-hardcore and metal. The only nu-metal band worth listening to is Deftones, who had a lot of Hum in their sound.

Speaking of post-hardcore, if you're looking for something less chugging and more abrasive, check out The Jesus Lizard, Big Black, Shellac, Rapeman, Mclusky, Fugazi, Quicksand, Drive Like Jehu, Nation of Ulysses, Refused (check them out regardless) and At the Drive-In.
