Welcome to the second almost-but-not-quite-annual level design contest for YI, also known as “TLMB’s official SMWC Yoshi's Island Level Design Challenge!” (TLMBOSMWCYILDC:2014). Or that’s at least what I call it and no one can tell me otherwise… Anyway let’s jump right into the history!

I’ll be your host for the second time in a row; I really wanted to spark interest into the ever so unexplored terrain known as YI modification. I saw that SMWC had users with great skills in regular ol’ SMW and wanted to see what they could potentially do in Yoshi’s Island, and despite the low amount of entrants the quality and individuality most met my expectations! There has been a bunch of users who thought it was fun and requested a sequel to it so here I am now.

Also, I learned a lot about being a host from last contest and do feel quite sorry for the few entrants that experienced quite problematic issues. However this time I’ll cover mostly all the bases I could think of with these new rules.

You have until June 4th (about 60 days, no extensions) at 11:59:49 PM Central Standard Time to make one level that you believe is a showcase of your best efforts. However, if I am playing your entry for over 45 minutes and I am at a loss of direction of either an exit or a specific item and I'm not having fun, not only will your points score low, you may be disqualified. (note: this specific rule may be altered, but please understand the shorter and sweeter the levels are the more helpful they would be to me and whatever judges I get [not that a long level will lose points out of bias, see last year’s first place entry]))

Important points:
- This contest will be at the most “anything goes,” meaning ASM, extensive graphical changes, and custom music will be accepted. For your information, these things can help or hurt your level depending on how it’s executed but won’t be a major factor to what we are judging, which is level design (other than bonus points).

- Fortunately for all who decide to enter, custom music insertion will be available for all as we have a new tool by Jimmy52905 that converts text data into hex data for you to manually insert into your rom via a hex editor. We have 12 example ports that will come with the tool that you may use in the contest or help you make your own port. Jimmy will explain more in a post in the discussions thread.

- It is required to include a text file that’ll help judges reach 100% in level in case we have difficulty reaching 100 percent in our second or third run of your level, examples of help would be like how many red coins/flowers we should have by midpoint X or hints leading to locations of hidden rooms.

- You may work with 1 additional partner for level design, and if needed, assistance can hopefully be given for custom music insertion.

- Kaizo levels are allowed, but please dear lord make them fun/playable without tool usage.


Judging remains the same as the previous year, using our tried and true 50 point scale. Each category is worth up to 10 points:

Creativity: Did you take the original Yoshi's Island and bend it to form new, creative puzzles, clever areas, and tricky obstacles.
Difficulty: Is the difficulty just right? Is it not insanely tough, but at the same time, not insanely easy?
Appeal: Does the level look nice? Are there any graphical glitches?
Functionality: Does the level work properly? Are there any places that are unfair/can prohibit the player too easily?
FUN: Is your level FUN OVERALL?

Bonus Points (can range from 0-1):
(1 point) for just making a level tile and a custom name,
(1 point) if your level tile matches the gimmick applied in the level (based on judge’s speculations)
(1 point) if the custom level name matches the gimmick/level nicely.
(1 point) if the (custom) level music goes
(1 point) if the level contains 100% collectables (and if it doesn’t please note that in your mandatory text file).

The following list is a list of things that you can change that will not affect your overall score:

-Editing the "Nintendo Presents" logo
-Editing the Overworld other than the level tile
-Editing the Title Screen
-Editing the Intro and its message
-Adding and editing a Credits sequence if applicable

After the submission period closes, judging will begin. Judging will last the entire month of June and winners will hopefully be announced the second week of July. The reason why these dates are so late is because I am a human that still has life obligations to fulfill.

There will be three/four judges this year, however, they will remain anonymous until the winners have been announced. I'll also have to find a way to pick them too.

Here are some tips from last year's contest to help get you started or perhaps give you an idea or two for your level:

- feeling lost when it comes to designing a level? There is an entire subforum dedicated to the modification of YI, so please feel free to ask any question and read every readme!
- I am giving you guys 60 days, a week in advance of actual design, make sure you know how to use the tools of the trade, read the readme and other FAQs available. List to the tools will be provided in the first post of the discussions thread.
- Unique ideas: Again, feel free to make any type of level that you wish. But know that having a really cool idea or gimmick in a level can definitely raise your creativity score.
- Don’t reveal your big guns to the judges, I did a great job of avoiding spoilers last year, make it easy for me this year as well.

How to submit your level

When you believe that you have the perfect level, make an .ips patch from your level and upload it to your personal File Bin and then post a link to it in this thread. DO NOT UPLOAD YOUR LEVEL TO THE HACKS SECTION. If you post your level and then find out that you made a small mistake, or want to change something, you have until the deadline for the contest to resubmit your updated version. ANY LEVELS OR UPDATED LEVELS SUBMITTED AFTER THE DEADLINE WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. Additionally, DO NOT PM ME YOUR SUBMISSIONS. They must be posted somewhere in this thread or they will not be accepted.


LASTLY, this thread is to be only for Submissions. Do not use this thread for discussion purposes, only submitting your work. This means DO NOT POST HERE UNLESS YOU ARE SUBMITTING YOUR LEVEL OR AN UPDATE FOR IT, and please remove the previous post made. Use the YI:LDC Discussion Thread for all contest-related discussion.

Permission was granted by SNN himself (forgive me for not posting in the contest approval forum), and that this contest is official. The reason why I wanted to judge this was because a number of YI level designers are on the mod team and I want them to join (YoshisFan being an exception). I really hope people join this, I'd like to bring some excitement into Yoshi Island hacking plus I have some neat trophies for the winners :>


It is with the power invested with me to extend the contest to our weird cousin forum, talkhaus. I’ll even extend the idea of the contest toward forum infamy between 2 separate catagories:
- Whichever forum produces more entries will be more renown for awesome participation
- Whichever forum has a better mean score for its respective top 10 entries will be renowned as the more able designer.

To notify which forum you are participating for, you must include the forum in your submission post. Now you all have some good clean fun!

P.S. Someone inform talkhaus about this, and feel free to address complaints of the rules in the discussion forum.

I wonder what a HFD opcode would do in ASM...
Here is my submission: I worked really hard on it. I have a surprise for it, and I still have to make a document to say that there are 5 flowers and 20 red coins. I forgot the level is 1-8. Should I state that in the Readme document? I uploaded an .SRM file.

Legacy custom music

Posting it just in case I miss the deadline, but I may edit my entry if I have time / don't forget.

Similar to my 2012 entry, the level you need to play is 1-E. There is a .srm file included, put it in the folder of your hack with the same name as the ROM. For Snes9X you may need to put the save inside the save folder in the emulator folder.

As usual, I am submitting mine at the last minute.
Here it is.
There are actually 2 different levels inside of this folder. One of which is the actual contest entry and is the one that I want to be judged. The other one is a "bonus" level of sorts; you can play it if you want but I don't want that one to be judged. Essentially it is a very long puzzle level that could take up to several hours to 100%. If you're feeling up to the challenge, give it a try I suppose.

Yay here is something resembling a YI level. Maybe this'll give me and goom the motivation to actually finish the romhack we've been working on for two years.
