Read here.

Net Neutrality in a nutshell: the state of the internet now -- ISPs aren't charging companies extra yet to allow faster transfer speeds to you, the consumer. All sites are treated equally.

However this is all about to go out the window unless something is done. For those of us in America, this means large ISPs, like Comcast, Verizon, and AT&T, are going to throttle sites that don't pay them a premium. Sites that aren't backed by tons of money, like SMW Central, or that local mom-and-pop shop's site, are going to be slow. Big sites like Google and Facebook can afford to dish out the cash to keep higher speeds. In theory, this could also be used to censor sites by throttling them to the point where they're barely/not usable at all.

A vote on an internet-changing plan is going to take place May 15. This does not mean the new rules will be set in place, but I think it's important that we try and do everything we can to spread awareness and stop it before it's too late. Tweet it, post on Tumblr, G+, Blogspot, anything. Ask your webmaster friends to put alerts on the site like everyone did with SOPA. Get people to write to their congressmen to oppose the plan. This idea would be awesome if our big site friends could take part in it.

We need net neutrality because the new plan gravely threatens small business, inhibits innovation, and it infringes on our right to free speech. Make it known that We the People will NOT let our freedoms be messed with.

So if this passes, nobody will be able to start a site unless they are filthy rich? Well, I'm going to make the only post on my G+ account that I will ever make.

Well, they'll be able to start a site... it's just going to probably be horrendously slow and therefore unsuccessful against its competitors unless you have a lot of money to throw to internet service providers.

one word: idiots.

Do these guys not know how badly this will damage the economy? The internet these days in many countries drives economy growth. At a time when the economy in the United States needs growth more than anything, they are going to try and paralyse the internet?

Some people >_>

I can't do much but say this is stupid, unfortunately. I think some European leaders were going to try and pass a similar thing over here but it got kicked to the kerb.

I already mentioned it in another thread, but similar ideas are starting to pop in on Mexico, although more focused to censor than to profit, anyways, we can stop them.
I have been watching events unfold and I must say that when this proposal is examined in and out, it is a bad idea. Nothing much I can do but all I can say is that the proposal is idiotic to say the least.
I feel like this old thread is relevant, just to let you know that this has been amist for at least 4 months.

It seems very idiotic yes, but the main reason this is a thing is so that these huge companies can get even more of our money. What matters to them is not how they get the money, but it is the fact that they have the money at the end of the day. Sad really.

As I said earlier:
Quote
- charge websites so you have access to them (pay extra fees to continue having access to websites in addition to your other fees you have now. If it gets really bad, our internet bills could double.)

- provide better transfer rates to websites that have more money (giving the rich and powerful websites a large advantage, similar to what already happens on YouTube)

- discriminate against certain websites and/or poor people (possibly leading to censorship)

These are problems that will slowly but surely surface if we lose the fight against Verizon, and now it seems that the FCC turned on us.

3 days ago, I made my own video to support net neutrality and keep it alive, based off of the Angry German Kid:
He tries to play Unreal Tournament, but has internet problems.
I now find that Verizon is much like the devil, by giving into sins such as greed.

I'm wondering if there will be a protest large enough where I live, because I would go if possible.
Also, I think I might have found the FCC chairman's phone number. Should I call him and file my complaint?

If there isn't one, see if you can try and organize one, and do so in a very conspicuous area along the main road or right outside of a building owned or rented by any internet service provider.

Any voice heard is more helpful than no voice at all. Call him. Be professional, but don't sound passive, or else your opinion will be dismissed.

Don't Americans see that they're repeating the same mistakes that caused the Russian Revolution and the rise of Communism? Only this time if a revolution does occur they may as well regress back to tribalism because of the US mentality on Communism...

You might want to read that Wikipedia page a little more closely.

Funnily enough, I had heard very little about this except from the tumblr kids that I know, who I wouldn't listen to anyway. Thanks for the heads-up, I would definitely support a "slow internet" day.
