Ripping ExGFX from spritesheets
Well, how many times have you wanted to rip from a savestate or from a ROM but the graphics are very disorganized or just impossible to assemble? Or maybe you want to get graphics from games that aren't ROMs? Well, from now on, you can rip anything you want from a spritesheet! (or any image that applies)

Step 1
Finding a spritesheet.

You can just google it, but I reccommend The Spriters Resource, since it has spritesheets from various games and even some custom ones. (Remember to give credit to the ripper!)

This is the spritesheet we will use for the examples:

Step 2
Making the palette.

To rip the palette, open the file on Paint. We select the tool and we pick one of the different colors in the image we want to rip. Then, go to Colors > Modify Colors.

The following window should appear:

As you see, the values for Red, Green and Blue appear on it.

Now, go to Lunar Magic’s palette editor and copy the values. Do this with each color in any order you want. (Have all the colors on the same palette row)

Here’s how the palette I made looks on Lunar Magic: (Yours can be different, it depends how you arranged the colors)

After this, go play the level which has the palette on ZSNES and make a savestate.

Step 3
Making the ExGFX file.

Now, open YY-CHR and load the palette. Then, select the palette row that you will use (the one you just made).

It should look like this:

Now, open the sprite sheet in Paint. Select any tiles you’d like to rip and copy and paste them onto YY-CHR:

As you see, some colors might come out wrong, or just don’t appear at all. You need to fix this by drawing over the tiles by yourself. You should look at the sprite sheet and recolor so it looks like it.

Repeat this with all the tiles you want to rip, then save and insert on Lunar Magic.

Congratulations, you have ripped from a spritesheet!
Now you just have to make your Map16 pages (if you’re ripping FG/BG graphics) and use the new graphics in your hack!

Please post any questions/suggestions you might have in this thread. Thanks.
Really good tutorial! I didn't know that you can simply copy and paste directly from Paint. I have many sprite sheets, I think I'll try to rip something. Thanks for this tutorial. It's good, anyone should make it sticky.
Yes, this tutorial is very nice, I was going to make one tutorial like this but you win Kaeru. :)
You can also make an image ingame. Not all FG/BG are always there. For lots of FGs I recommend www.bghq.com, for BG... just make them ingame by disallowing layer 1, 3, etc. In ZSNES, you can do it with the '1' and '3' buttons. '5' for sprites, '4' for BG4 (I don't know if it's used) only to keep the plain BG and the normal BG behind.
--------> Don't follow "Find Roy's Dignity", my hack. Because it's pretty outdated. <--------
Sweet! This'll be great for NCP sprites.

I've removed my NoFades patch until I can find the brightness code for Star Road warps.

This could also be useful for changing Mario's GFX.

This came in handy. Why? Because before I didn't know about the "edit colors' option that would give you the exact RGB values of the current color. :o
I think there is a minor problem with The Spriter Resource

    Yes, I mean replace.
But how could I match the tiles correctly?

Just paste it where you think it fits. If it doesn't look right, reassemble the tiles with the SMW Player Tilemap Editor (Tools section).

If you wanna be all technical about it, it's not exactly ripping, more copying.

But, still an awesome tutorial and a method that never fails.

    *See above tutorial*.

It works for any sprite sheet, as long as there aren't too many tiles and the palette is within the 10 colour limit.
Hm, I've been trying to rip from an NSMB spritesheet, but due to the fact that there are colors that are about 2 values apart, it's impossible to see all of them (trying to set up the palette)

Is there... anyway to... extract/show all the colors in a selected region???
<-- this is the dope on dope
