Ripping ExGFX from spritesheets
Well, how many times have you wanted to rip from a savestate or from a ROM but the graphics are very disorganized or just impossible to assemble? Or maybe you want to get graphics from games that aren't ROMs? Well, from now on, you can rip anything you want from a spritesheet! (or any image that applies)
Step 1
Finding a spritesheet.
You can just google it, but I reccommend The Spriters Resource, since it has spritesheets from various games and even some custom ones. (Remember to give credit to the ripper!)
This is the spritesheet we will use for the examples:
Step 2
Making the palette.
To rip the palette, open the file on Paint. We select the tool and we pick one of the different colors in the image we want to rip. Then, go to Colors > Modify Colors.
The following window should appear:
As you see, the values for Red, Green and Blue appear on it.
Now, go to Lunar Magic’s palette editor and copy the values. Do this with each color in any order you want. (Have all the colors on the same palette row)
Here’s how the palette I made looks on Lunar Magic: (Yours can be different, it depends how you arranged the colors)
After this, go play the level which has the palette on ZSNES and make a savestate.
Step 3
Making the ExGFX file.
Now, open YY-CHR and load the palette. Then, select the palette row that you will use (the one you just made).
It should look like this:
Now, open the sprite sheet in Paint. Select any tiles you’d like to rip and copy and paste them onto YY-CHR:
As you see, some colors might come out wrong, or just don’t appear at all. You need to fix this by drawing over the tiles by yourself. You should look at the sprite sheet and recolor so it looks like it.
Repeat this with all the tiles you want to rip, then save and insert on Lunar Magic.
Congratulations, you have ripped from a spritesheet!
Now you just have to make your Map16 pages (if you’re ripping FG/BG graphics) and use the new graphics in your hack!
Please post any questions/suggestions you might have in this thread. Thanks.
