Did anyone hear about the manhunt in Moncton, Canada the last few days? I live about two blocks away from where the initial shooting happened and was on lockdown for 3 days, meaning that I couldn't leave the house. I saw heavily armoured SWAT trucks going by every 10 minutes and heard helicopters all the time. I've never experienced something like this - it really freaked me out. They caught him early this morning at 12:10 AM so I can go outside now thankfully.

It was covered by BBC, NBC, CNN, and a shitload of other news stations.

Here's an article about it

E: Is this in the right category?

This would probably be much better in Hot off the Press.

Also sorry to hear that you guys got locked down, but at-least he did not strike again. The photo they showed on RTE made him out to be some sort of military personal - was he ex-military?

That news article was quite long, too long I think. I know it is important to highlight events like these and show peoples reactions, but sometimes I feel the media glorifies and highlights these events too much. That article (and things like "how to talk to your kids about the shooting") rub me the wrong way.

I hope above all that the families will one day find peace.

I heard that he was in the military before the incident, although I cannot confirm whether or not he actually was. And yeah, I think he's getting too much attention, which is probably what he wants.

All I can actually say, is holy fudge, man. Well, now since the manhunt is over, you should be living in peace, but don't take any chances on suspicious character around your neighborhood.

Here's a more to-the-point article (Warning: comment section gave me rabies)

Glad this guy was caught and glad you're alright Cousin Earl. Wonder what his motive was, though - he must have been one pissed-off bacon to target cops. It'd be kinda hard to pull this off without premeditation too so I wonder who knew this was going to happen in advance - if anyone - and why they didn't communicate it to the police.

That said, I wish the media didn't publicize mass murderers so much. It encourages copycat incidents and doesn't do much more than fearmonger and encourage legislation which takes everyone's rights away while the criminals don't give a damn and still find ways to arm themselves, because what criminal reads the law to make sure what he's doing is legal, right? Murder's been illegal since early civilization and it still happens regularly.

If he's ex-military, I heard service dogs are great for people with PTSD. Too late for that, though - he made his bed and now he can rot in it.

Oh, and @Cousin Earl, better safe than sorry on my part to bring this up: in the off-chance you find a gun on your property left over from this guy, or if your friends find one on theirs, or if you see one anywhere in the area: do not touch, and look for an adult immediately. Always assume there's a round in the chamber and exercise common sense with it. If they don't know how to make a gun clear without discharging it, tell them:

1. Never point it in an unsafe direction for any reason - I don't care what your excuse is. Seems like a common sense thing but someone muzzle swept me with a shotgun Sunday because they were irresponsible, so... yeah. I can't stress the importance of high attentiveness when handling firearms. They aren't toys.

2. Eject the magazine FIRST (if there is one)

3. THEN open the action (e.g. for bolts, just pull the bolt handle up and back) to eject a cartridge that could be in it, and then notify the police.

If the magazine isn't taken out before opening the action, it will keep feeding rounds into the chamber. If you can't find an adult and you don't feel comfortable making it safe/don't understand which parts do what, then just don't touch it, period. Call the cops immediately and try to make sure nobody gets their hands on the gun while they're on the way.

Yeah, I should be safe now, thanks.

@Counterfeit
I actually heard that the shooter told his friends that "he wanted to go out with a bang". This could've been prevented if someone had spoken up, but of course no one did.
And yeah, I know what you mean about the media giving too much attention to murders. After the Boston Marathon Bombing they were still talking about it a month after it happened. If someone wanted to garner some attention and saw the coverage that that got they could get some pretty dangerous ideas. Strangely enough, there was a man in downtown Halifax today (a city in Nova Scotia, a province over from mine) that was walking about with a shotgun. He didn't shoot anyone thankfully, but he might've been planning too. Could he have been motivated by the actions of Justin Bourque?
The funny thing is, I had never even seen a gun before Thursday, when about 10 heavily armoured SWAT trucks drove past my house with rifles aiming out their windows. If I saw one I definitely wouldn't touch it - I wouldn't know how to handle it and would probably end up shooting my hand off. I'd call the police before whoever left it there came back for it.

Also, thanks for moving this thread.

No problem.

1) To "go out with a bang" is a common metaphor and I honestly wouldn't have expected anyone to be literal without context. o_O

2) They still bring up the Boston Boom Bringer here every now and then but I live 30 minutes from where it happened so it's not all that surprising. It was also on the news all week surrounding the anniversary, and any time something new comes up in the case or any 'important' opinions on the matter, we hear about it. That said, it's harder to copycat something that uses IEDs because that requires a lot more effort and I'm sure a lot of people would think it's easier to accidentally kill yourself with a homemade bomb than it is with a firearm and that scares them off. I think there were a few copycats, but they got stopped because they were really noisy about their ideas.

3) Probably not. Is "open carry" legal where you live? It's (sadly) not legal where I live (hell, I live in a state that is "may-issue" for CCW licenses and in my town it's HARD to get a class A.). I'm thinking maybe you have a case like Texas where people can OC long arms but no handguns, and he might've been doing it for various reasons, such as protection against another Bourque (after all, witnesses and victims are the real first responders,) or because he didn't want to leave it in his vehicle where it might be stolen, or even to quietly demonstrate that not all people with guns are inherently bad, since I've heard the issue of people wanting stricter gun control popping up in your area.

4) I've never actually seen a SWAT team before (and hope I never have to rofl) and I'd probably be flabbergasted too.

5) Good, you're doing the right thing. Don't hesitate to PM me if you have anymore questions.

I still don't know what to believe.
He's being detained in Sackville, which is like a town over, because they think that the RCMP in Moncton would beat him to death if they got the chance. Honestly, I don't blame them.
And I'm not too sure about the gun laws here, but you can't walk down the street armed.
