VLDC: Final Notes Before Release

Before you get your hopes up: no, this is not a release thread, but I encourage you to read on.

As of now, the VLDC collaboration hack is officially finished. This actually marks SMWC's second ever full-scale collab hack that has been completed, with the first being SMWCP (and the third being SMWCP2 .. whenever that happens). This is the first time I've ever attempted to turn a contest into a full hack, and thanks to people following my instructions during the submission period, there were very few issues with graphics/secondary exits/Map16/etc. overwriting one another. That's fantastic!

What I ended up doing was exactly as I had promised from day 1 - all of the levels are laid out and open from the get-go so you can play them in any order you'd like. Only the best and the worst levels are in ranked order - the rest are scattered across eight worlds. I should also note that there are no events in the hack, nor is there any "prize" for completion. Assuming a future version of this is made, such a feature might be implemented, but for now, you can play them/enjoy them at your own pace. Finally, to deal with the switch palaces, I have taken four entries from the "Valley Switch Palace" 24 hour contest and put them into the hack (though they are not ranked).

You can expect the following at C3:

-The IPS, which contains 82 submissions + 4 switch palaces for a grand total of 86 playable levels.
-A ZIP containing the music. We've created several remixes of SMW's main theme to stick with the "vanilla" theme (fire, fortress, etc) and, as per usual with collabs these days, we've created a set of custom map compositions. These will all be free for you to use.

In the meantime, enjoy a few teaser screenshots:

To all of you who submitted a level: thank you for making this possible, and I hope you enjoyed the contest/collab this year. I will be shutting down this forum in the next week in anticipation of the C3 release, but until then, you are welcome to discuss it all you'd like.

Thanks!
That's awesome! :D Glad that things turned out well enough for you to be able to finish assembing everything in time for a C3 release. Everything looks pretty polished judging from the screens - nice work on the author/ranking fields in the overworld!

So, thoughts about running one of those again next year?
It's easily the best thing I've done
So why the empty numb?
Sweet. Gotta say, this looks very impressive just from the screenshots. I'm definitely going to play this next week when it comes out.

I'm actually looking for opinions from people who entered in regards to how it was compared to previous years - that is, was the limited resources a problem? Do you prefer full freedom? Is there anything that could have been improved? Stuff like that.

On the whole though, I think it would be a great idea to do something like this again. Now that I know what I'm up against, I can plan accordingly and hopefully things will go even more smoothly next time around.
Limited resources are not a problem with me. I thought the contest this year went fine and I am fine with doing something like this again. It will be good to see the final result of this at C3.
Even though I made 73'rd, this will be loads of fun!

I'm so LP'ing this!

Maybe next time we could have an OW Contest where instead of making everything at once, you (or another judge) could pick the top contendors of each submap/main world.

Ooh! Now this looks good! Honestly, I'm quite impressed due to this being vanilla, some of the shots look like they were done using other resources, but I made me wrong and there was some really clever tricks done to achieve the effects.

I might have to get myself into one of these collabs if you guys tend to do one again. :)

Oh man, I checkd all those screenshots and they look AMAZING!
I think this is going to be the BEST Collab of 2014 , which is ever existed!
What music will be played in the game? The vanilla remixes or the music that was originally submitted with the level?

I did, in the end, have fun with this contest. It was pretty interesting. I can't wait for the C3 release, it'll mean I'll actually be playing ROM hacks for once :v

And thank you for making this contest possible SNN. You are really damn dedicated to these things.

IIRC both. For the former, these will be applied for levels that used an original SMW music or didn't have a specified one.
Oh my god. Why didn't I make a level? (even though I proably would have been in the last place) Anyways, I can't wait for this C3! (yes I can.) Even though I proably will get bored playing this, I still want to see what people made. I also may record it..
Kinda regret not finishing my level. Heck means more motivation if the chance comes up for a follow up.

I'd say keep the limited resources as well I just think he keeps things more organised and nobody will end up loosing sleep due to insertion issues.... I dunno really XD Oh well looking forward to seeing this release!
Looks pretty crazy this VLDC collab! Good work on all those who did participate in this collab, I will definitely enjoy it playing it and I will be sure to download it!
I had a lack of motivation too, anyway...

This hack looks great from these screenshots. I'll definitely play this!
Really nice to see it finally done, and that it will be released at C3, that's cool.

As a suggestion, add up some sort of indication that you beat the level so the player don't feel lost later on, if that is not already implemented. Sorry for not bringing this up before completion, the idea just came now.

Yeah, I alluded to that in the topic. If I had more time, I would have incorporated events and such and given the player some way to keep track of what they've beaten, but for now they'll have to do it themselves.
I see. But there isn't a patch that add up some sort of icon next to level name after beaten? It could easily solve this.
